Yeah good program this week, I especially enjoyed watching the downhill at St Anton, how they manage to ski from half way up Kapall back to town in 1m17s is remarkable ! The Eisfall doesn't look as steep on TV as in reality though, going straight down there and making the right hand turn is amazing stuff.
Much better without all the acrobatic stuff of last week.

That was a decent episode, I enjoyed it. I may be wrong but I don’t recall seeing the Madonna night race on the Beeb before, Schladming always gets an episode but that was a good show I thought. The powdery side-piste conditions that Ed and Chemmy were messing around in looked absolutely glorious.

Nice episode yesterday too. Downhill action men & women's, nice views of the Dollies and a bit of that standing on sledges acrobatic stuff

I'd picked up most of the coverage from Wengen on Eurosport. Because it'd started late and with 2 big crashes the snow conditions had changed so much by that point if your start number was below about 30 you didn't stand a chance.
Brookes' win in Laax puts her into top place for Slopestyle WC as well as putting her into the overall lead of Park and Pipe.

@Richard_Sideways, not just the top 30, you could see it degrading pretty much from the start. I impressive that Odie managed to get such a good time given how soft it was in places. Must be quite frustrating to be stood at the top knowing your time is getting slower by the minute

I was thinking that. I wonder if there's some way in which racers could be 'compensated' for a poor bib place. Too complicated, I guess, particularly when conditions are constantly changing.

aren't the top 15? in the rankings randomly drawn for run 1 anyway, so its luck of the draw which evens out over time. Run 2 based on run 1 results, fastest last?

@KSH, I think a good bib is just part of the reward of getting good results, so poor results breed poor position and poor results.
There's a similar issue in rallying where, on a gravel event, the first car is cleaning the road for those behind so people try not to be first on the road. For years they've tried different approaches to avoiding this issue but nothing has managed to solve it, there's just a different set of compromises.

Love the drones chasing the skiers but is it possible to suppress the whine of the drones?

@SnoodyMcFlude, I know next to nothing about rallying but the way you present it, it sounds like fore-runners would be an answer.

 You know it makes sense.

@snowball, not to drag it too far off topic but that has effectively been tried. The problem is that a lower class of car or slower drivers are not on the same lines as the top level, so you pretty much create a bigger issue as the loose gravel ends up on the line the drivers want to be on. They've been playing with different options for about 30 years and there really isn't a silver bullet. Even reusing stages doesn't work because there comes a point where the surface starts to degrade. In many ways it's similar to a warm slalom race.

I think for at least the last few years the MdC night race has been held before Christmas, so before Ski Sunday has started.
I seem to remember them mentioning Dave Riding's podium in the first episode last season when they did a round up of the events to date.

The Ski Mountaineering bit last night was pretty interesting - as Ed said, those transitions were crazy.

The 7 minutes from start of the programme until actually seeing any of the racing was a pita. They could have shown 5 more minutes of ski racing.

it was - I went from at the first mention of it thinking "that's not an olympic sport", to watching the article and thinking that will be well worth watching, particularly so sort of sprint course event. Made triathletes look slow!

Just watched the ski mountaineering pairs relay on Eurosport off the back the SS segment... hmm.
It does seem rather geared to awarding whoever best manages the transitions - bit like watching F1 for the pitstops. Afraid the Olympic Ski Faffing makes me not really want to dive in.

They should add that in, each competitor has to do at least one boot faff (undo and retighten each boot), one goggle change, putting on a layer and taking a layer off...oh and going for a whizz (black run staircase included).

Seem to be padding it out tonight, I guess to make up for loss of men’s downhill. All a bit dull so far.

They should also have to carry a crate of empties to the bottle bin, climb down a hazardous turd mined slope then stand around for a random time waiting for someone who was definitely in the boot room honest.

@Dave of the Marmottes, waiting in the changeover zone for your teammate who had to go back to the room for a change of lenses and a tactical wee...
The loss of the downhill sat as heavy as a pile of congealed kartoffelklosse in rich jager sauce, and while I always approve of more slopestyle on SS I couldn't help but think "ee there'll be trouble at t'mill tomorrow...".

Schladming is a separate rights deal for the BBC (because it falls under Ski Austria rather than inFront) so is expensive and difficult to arrange at short notice.
