Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

It back and on now.

Cue all the usual remarks about ringtones, Chemmys hand waving, "it aint what it used to be nostalgia", too much/little snowboarding/racing/equality/etc.

What is the point of big air on skis? It's terrible, what are they trying to prove? It looks untidy, every jump looks the same please spare us this misery!

I’m curious, in an aerial based event, is there an advantage in wearing baggy clothes? Just the culture/fashion? A genuine question.

Yes there is. Less restrictive in your movements. But some snowboarders do try to out baggy each other. Mia's baggyups were pretty baggy.

We go out in baggy shorts on DH rig through local "park" to dilute the herds of roady marauding round and round there in their natural habitat Very Happy makes them feel better about all the expense having someone to beat.

We're just cannon fodder on the flats, think they've even got carbon nuptials some of them Toofy Grin

And people complain that DH is boring rolling eyes

I always look forward to ski sunday but it was disappointing that (afaik) BBC didn't advertise it's reappearance in advance and the alpine skiing coverage was poor.

Havent bothered for a number of year - so sad as it used to be great as did Beeb's coverage of the 4 Hills.

Am watching it on catchup and no mention of Dave Ryding who is having a consistently solid season, Andrew Musgrave who podiomed this week.... Not quite sure about the point of ski sunday, first episode and we have had multiple rounds of slalom, downhill inc the Stelvio...... Not impressed Eurosport is where it is at now....

Must admit I find the big air event more like watching gymnastics or acrobatics rather than a snow sport. Can’t get into it at all.

I enjoyed watching the giant slalom from Kranska Gora having previously raced that Podkoren course.

I fast fwded through most of the big air stuff, which was the majority of the program. watching gymnastics on plastic in a big stadium arena doesnt really get my blood racing.

I know the beeb now struggle for highlights footage from a lot of the events, but as sqid above, no mention of how the brits are getting on to date was a bit poor.

slightly confused.
Chemmy in a Planks anorak - I thought Planks went bust last year?

Enjoyed the big air though - much better than sking between 2 poles. I guess they are limited in what they can show with budget / costs for rights, etc.

My understanding is BBC presenters have to wear their own clothes. So it's most likely hers from a season or two ago.

Morning, not being "catty" but Ed looked different/younger.

Or is it just that he has had a shave?

But we too thought the program was below par with no mention of Dave.

I have however found the FIS ski channel on youtube and that gave me a couple of 3 minute race highlights which filled my hole Toofy Grin

Suppose that they used to have to put a bit of tape over the logos, but as Planks is gone you don't have to... did note that there was no mention of Ski Social at the end this week so maybe that's gone.

As for content, knew that the mutterings would be louder than the cheers for watching Mia stick the back-to-back win in Austria.

Only if that itch is in some way satisfied by (admittedly very impressive) aerobatics in a stadium, I’m afraid. Mine is only satisfied by real snow and real mountains

How did you know? Laughing

My comments from last year still apply, anyone who seriously wants specific content for any alpine racing/freestyle/snowboarding/cross country/ski jumping should have a Discovery+ sub. Ski Sunday is a going to cover a broad church of various winter sports and has a very limited budget and time slot to do so. They will never be able to cater for every thing or go into great detail.

I find it remarkable that every year people whine on this thread as if they've been given a bait and switch. The show has been the same format for years.

Many won't be happy until David Vine is reinstalled as presenter who appears once a year doing a hockey stop to camera and channelling an inner alpine William Woollard.

The stadium aerobatics weren't my cup of tea but at least the Beeb are doing something that they can get footage of and where a Brit has done well.

Eurosport scratches my itch for more extensive coverage. I'd love it if Ski Sunday was able to do a better 5 minute roundup of all things snow and ice (alpine skiing, biathlon/x-country, ski/boarder cross, bobsleigh and sliders etc.) focusing on GB competitors, but obviously they don't have the footage for that. I think it would make a great feature but too expensive.

It is what it is. We'll I'm sure get a slalom/Dave heavy episode, Wengen, Kitz, Schaldming. Then whatever else. Hopefully a few interesting side features by Ed and Chemmy.

to be fair it only shows 2, as next week is at one time in the civilised world and another time for Wales. I'm assuming its just showing "past" and "next" episodes and we will get the usual 6 or 7 ?

I think some of the responses on here are a little harsh. I'm sure I remember people complaining last year that the content was race-heavy with not enough freestyle content. This year, they start with Big Air and you lot are complaining there's not enough racing!

I thought Snowheads has a heavy bias to Alpine skiing, very little interest in freestyle skiing or boarding.

S'not a race anyway apart from the dual slaloms and board/ski cross. Everything else is time trialling.

I think when you remember that the programme budget is miniscule and the BBC hijack all their programmes for a minority cause, it's fair to point out with this in mind, that SS is still very good.
I enjoyed the Big Air.
There'll be plenty of race content with Wengen and Kitzbuhel coming up. And I am sure they will do the Schladming night slalom - although the only really entertaining time for that was the year that the crowd pelted that miserable git Kristofferson and stopped him winning.
I agree, comments are harsh.
Despite all conjecture, I would rather have it in its current format, than not at all.

Yes, any snowsports programme on mainstream TV, even with flaws, is to be welcomed imv.

I'm only complaining how pointless big air on skis is. The snowboard big air was awesome. More tonight on Eurosport at 10pm

Doing a wee catchup on some missed podcasts and, so you can brace/sedate/burn your TV license in preparation for non-race action bits you can probably expect to see this season will include a segment from Jenny Jones in the US and Tim Warwood doing a bit on taking the snow train with the whole family.

If ever there was racing ideal for TV it's those 4x competition on cross courses. Great to watch with that fast and mad action.

Theres good courses (which we always run) in Val Cenis, Termignon, and Sommand plus Les Arc 2000 my kids have loved those.

Its always related to what SS can and can't afford and rebroadcast from the rights owners. For a show that only has a 6-show run in a normal season, the budget is tight enough for Jonsey to have famously inadvertently blown a sizable chunk of it once on a round of coffees and chips for the crew...
