Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Not surprised, further up north here in Darlington it's still falling. It's supposed to turn to rain here later as we're at the bottom of a valley but on higher ground is anyone's guess!

I've just read the article in The Independent on Chambery...... what a nightmare!

Based on the report in The Independent, it sounds like TUI (Crystal) have caused the problems at Chambery Airport this week. The report states that other airlines managed to get their flights in/out of Chambery, during periods of intermittent poor visibility.

TUIs treatment of their clients, if the report is accurate, sounds disgraceful.

Probably worth a thread of its own, given how many people using this site might travel with TUI, through Crystal, in a winter season?

I have never got the hate for Chambery.

We have used it multiple times over the years with zero issues.

My mate who lives in Ste Foy always said "its closed all the time for fog" but never happened with us.

Much closer drive to many resorts, and your luggage generally arrives about 5 mins after you get off the plane !

The final descent along the valley is one of my favourite things in aviation.

@GreenDay, I've used it twice, one of the times we had a fair delay at departure because of waiting for fog to clear.

And if flights are grounded the airport is so small that it quickly becomes overcrowded. We had the same issue at Grenoble the other week.

Chambery was brilliant when you could fly from Southampton on a Thursday. I was once driving away (car parked three minutes walk from the terminal, free) within 10 minutes of touching down. And yes, that approach is terrific!

I’m super wary about chambery after my experience. I’d be heartbroken if I lost a day skiing out of my week a year due to the weather. There’s a reasonable probability of it happening. Not worth it for me. Sadly. As it’s way closer and when it all runs smoothly is a great option!

Having made it from Gatwick to Turin we've got a third of our party in Manchester, hopefully they'll be able to leave soon, radio silence on the group WhatsApp indicates they may now be on flight mode, they'd been sat on the plane for two hours last message.

The TUI/Chambery chaos reminds me of Crystal Eurostar chaos during french rail strike in Jan 2019, we were supposed to be on the overnight train to Bourg, got moved to the Friday lunchtime train with all of 36h notice- fortunately my OH had booked the day off and being my own boss I could move stuff around. We then discovered, overhearing chatter on the train that Crystal passengers had been told via text to get off at Albertville, a text we never received and in messenger chats with crystal customer service they seemed to know nothing or to contradict themselves, in the end we gambled and got off, were met by a crystal rep who told us we were being put in a hotel in Albertville overnight, with a 6AM coach to Tignes 'so we could get an extra day on the slopes' only to be abandoned at an apartment building that told us we couldn't check in till 5pm and that there was nowhere secure to leave our bags. /Rant

Not a day to be the airport ops manager up north. It’s an oft mocked phrase but it really was the ‘wrong kind of snow’ to make things easy.

Firstly the staff have to get in - cue joke about how does the snowplough driver get to work?

As the temps were close to zero the snow was wet and gloopy. Powder snow can be blown slush not so much. You plough it out of the way, it then melts and then if the sky clears you have it freezing to ice which is a lot more tricky to get rid of. I’m sure today some would be tempted to do nothing and wait for it to melt, that saves any hassle from the environmental element - airport deicing fluid makes good fertiliser in water courses. You can’t use salt as it causes too much damage to the aircraft.

Then you’ve got to deice the aircraft. Not so tricky for those on the ground this morning as the aircraft are at the same temperature as the air so quite close to freezing. But those arriving will have been cold soaked at altitude, they then park and the sleet freezes to the wings and flying surfaces and forms a nasty layer of ice!

A day to throw a sickie!

Which is possibly why brother-in-law's early EasyJet flight to Geneva was cancelled. They've put him on one tomorrow morning, he will have lost at least a day's skiing.

@chocksaway, much is made of how terrible the British are at dealing with snow, but I think there are two main drivers in that. Firstly, for much of the country it's not overly common to have a significant enough snowfall to cause many issues. Secondly, and as you allude to, quite often it's a horrible slushy snow which is a pain to deal with and then freezes.
