 Poster: A snowHead
|
This is the first time I have skied at Christmas as an adult. My parents did it one year when I was kid when we went to La Molina (at least that's where we stayed, there was no snow, so we were bused to Andora under the ski guarantee that came with holiday - don't think that's a "thing" anymore is it?).
I have always read it is quieter than New Year week. It has felt very busy to me, quite a good number of long scrum queues with pushing and shoving going on and certain runs very busy with out of control skiers. Got taken out once completely by a teen racing through a narrow blue.... realised after it was also a lino between 2 parks - so presume that's why they were on it.
My question is - has this season been busier than previous years? Or is this just normal and New Year week is even worse?

It's busier this year in France. 95 per cent occupancy according to the news. Which I'd high.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Apologies for duplicate thread.
That was accidental.
@davidof, did they compare to previous years occupancy figures?

It was less busy in Les Saisies than last Christmas with no bad queues and straight on to some lifts.

We are in Cervinia and it’s busy but not extremely busy, but l can see a lot more people arriving today for the New Year week. The only other time we have been here was also Christmas week but this was during Covid and hence less busy

I guess good snowfall the week before has encouraged more people to ski? Perhaps those with holiday homes didn't go during the recent wet Christmas' with poor snow??

Last day in Sestriere today and it’s been bonkers busy, compounded by Sestriere having the best snow in the Italian sectors of Via Lattea so aside from day skiers from Turin, it’s been every ski racing club going turning up en masse.
Think today may be ‘changeover’ day as well for New Year, loads of new arrivals in my hotel this evening.
Never skied at Christmas before so have nothing to compare against, but combined with no snowfall for 6 days and sunny, warm temperatures, it feels like reduced run and lift openings, the holiday visitors and some of the lower resorts having poor snow has just compounded things into being busy and crowded.

@Specialman, thankfully snow has been wonderful here and we have had some awesome skiing.
Having experienced Bansko at both New Uear and Feb half term. It isn't as bad as that bit still much busier than expected. Wondered whether today was people who arrived Friday evening for New year week making worse still

Whenever we’ve been away over Xmas (only twice so not extensive experience but over 2 countries) its been quiet until boxing day when the hoards descend , even worse is the first weekend after Xmas if Xmas falls during the week.
I think made worse by the two resorts being an easy drive from major cities.

Quiet in Chamonix valley (at least the Argentiere/le tour end of it). Haven’t queued for a single lift all week. Pistes quiet, fresh powder still available if you’re prepared to hike a bit. Very typical IME.
Car park has got dramatically busier today- I suspect next week is going to be utter carnage.
