Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Driving Innsbruck to Selva

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Will be driving from Innsbruck to Selva early January and was wondering if I will need chains, I don't think so but thought it would be worth asking the collective Very Happy I have Cross Climate 2 on the car
snow conditions

With winter tyres you'll be fine. They keep those roads clear. We had a ft over night in Selva last week. Only the delivery lorries and buses had chains on the following day. 4wd cars with winter tyres had no issues whatsoever.

@radar, short answer, no. The Cross Climate's despite being an all season tyre are actually very good snow tyres.

Note though the possibility of hold ups on the Brenner Pass due to roadworks, especially at the weekends!

I think that the works are either on hold over the holiday period, or completed. No hold ups either way last week.

If we could predict the exact weather conditions when you're driving over the Brenner in early January, we'd all have the Jackpot numbers the Christmas Lottery and be rich beyond out wildest dreams!! Laughing Laughing

It's unlikely as it's a relatively low pass that carries lots of traffic and constantly ploughed in snowy weather.

If things got really snowy, one lane might close maybe, so it would be slow going as you all follow behind the plough lorry??

Been through the Arlberg Tunnel approaches like that.

After all it is free Go on u know u want to!

Why would you not take chains?
They're a one-off expense and don't take up much room.
Given the nature of scenarios that give rise to a need for chains, I'd much prefer to have chains in the back forever and never need them, than need them once and not have them.

In 10 years, going back and forth, I've needed to put chains on the BU5 4 DUB just the once. With 4 wheel drive and [actual] Winter tyres not being enough, it was bad enough being in a situation where we actually needed chains - I certainly wouldn't want to have been in that spot without them! They're like a 'get out of the shit free' card.

@admin, to answer your question, being based in Saalbach for a number of weeks in the winter , I don’t really need them as there’s never an issue getting down to Zell or Saalfelden.

The drive from Saalbach’s going to be on A roads , which I’m OK with as I’m more used to Austrian winter driving, it was more about the last bit from Innsbruck across to Selva

When we used to drive to the French resorts I certainly had a set and used them once in 5 years for the last 100 meters to our accommodation in La Tania Very Happy.

'taint no biggie: Brenner is a major route and the road up to Selva isn't particularly steep.

That's where you're most likely to have an issue in Selva...the last 100 metres! Laughing Laughing

I drove into Selva one March, fine getting in, but it snowed nearly every night that week, so getting out of the driveway of the accommodation took a bit of pushing and wheelspinning, but once out on the main road, it was fine.

One snowy day in Lech the Resort Manager got stuck when she deviated off the hard edge in the chalet hotel car park. Lots of revving and wheelspinning and getting nowhere, so I found a bit of rubber matting from outside the ski room, wedged that under the tyre and she got some traction and was on her way. It earned me a free drink from the Hotel Manager at the bar that night!
