Hi all,
Car rented at Munich airport. Car comes with winter tyres.
Driving to SkiWelt (Hopfgarten)
1. Vignette (10 day) can be bought online with imnediate start from https://shop.asfinag.at/en/
Is that correct?
Plan to use Googlemaps for navigation and will follow their best route which is mostly motorway.
2. I leave Munich airport on Jan 2nd l about 11.30am.
Should traffic be reasonable? I am in no hurry however.
3. I return on Jan 7th. Departure time will depend on traffic.
Being ultra cautious, is leaving at 9am for a 1pm car drop off a reasonable plan?
4. Having read threads here, is refilling car with petrol at a petrol station in Eching the best plan?
Any other advice?
Thanks all.

1. You can also buy from any petrol station in Germany. If you use Googlemaps or Waze make sure to configure with the Austrian tolls included otherwise it might try to avoid the motorway which sometimes result in "no route found"

Getting to Skiwelt is usually OK... getting back to the airport, not so but I think 4 hours is way more than enough.
I've come a cropper with refilling at least 3 of the filling station enroute near to the airport that google sent me to don't exist. As said above, make life easy and go in the airport.
The drive is very easy btw

Be careful of the speed limit on the roads in the airport. The police had a radar trap just after the exit to the hire car park.

You'll need to Register first of course.

Check what you will be charged for taking the car cross border.
Check vehicle pick up and return is actually at the airport.
Vignette widely available at motorway service stations.
Re-fill with fuel at the “Tankstelle” next to the airport

Yes on the vignette and now easy online
There is unlikely to be much traffic on the 2nd it wont be a big travel day. The 7th is the first work day back so I would assume a fair number of trucks but no tourist traffic (which is the primary cause of jams). Two hours is more than enough from Hopfgarten to the airport on a weekday. The roadworks on the A99 have gone so should be no issue with that either. If you need to be there for 13:00 then plenty of time for a relaxed breakfast. You can avoid having to buy a vignette by using the Kufstein Süd exit and then using the road towards Wörgl, on busy traffic weekends this is banned to through traffic but should not be an issue on a weekday.
There is a petrol station at the airport. Its signposted from the first exit actually in the airport "Tankstelle". It is on your left as you drive in so you have to cross over the bridge ie turn left, you need to reverse your steps to get back to the correct road for rental returns. There are cheaper spots off airport, follow your sat nav.
Wave to me on the way past on the A99

I was gonna say you don't need the Vignette for Ski Welt if you get off at Kufstein
Mind you I went to Ellmau, which is that way anyway.

Went to Westerndorf 2 years ago, driving down through Germany. Did not purchase a Vignette as you can stay on the Autobahn into Austria and turn off at Kufstein Sud, you are allowed to stay on this section without Vignette. Drive from Kufstein Sud to Westerndorf took approx 30 mins, so not much time difference to staying on the autobahn with a vignette. Hopfgarten is nearer than Westerndorf, so this may be the best option..

As always with hire cars, check the tyres & bodywork carefully for damage. Twice, I have been given a "new undamaged " car that has had dents in it, one of those was from Munich. It's normal practice for hire companies to charge numerous renters for the same damage.

@Simon94, Sadly that is now banned at peak weekends, similarly to driving through Kufstein. Peak season weekend through traffic is restricted to the Autobahn all along the Inntal. The Police do enforce this and will send folk back to the Autobahn. Weekdays should be OK but look out for signs just in case.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

A vignette is peanuts and can be bought online before you leave the airport. I really don't get the avoidance tactics

@Teletart, You can do this but have to go via Söll on peak weekends as transit traffic is not allowed on the 171 road which runs parallel to the Autobahn. This is a copy of similar restrictions that were first introduced in the Salzburgerland due to the summer holiday queues for the Tauern tunnel tailing back from Flachauwinkl often 4 or 5km queues. Local villages were getting very fed up with folk trying to push in to the queues by taking non Autobahn routes. In the Inntal the mautfrei section was reintroduced on the basis that through traffic would be banned from Kufstein and then also from the rest of the side roads in the Inntal at peak times. This is mainly in the summer but also peak winter weekends. This is enforced both by the Police and local security staff, not worth trying to argue over €10. It can also be a very long slow drive up the road from Kufstein to Söll especially if a popular "Dutch" weekend, much better to take the Brixental / Wörgl exit if heading to Hopfgarten or Kirchberg.

I was going to say this, but for the price of it and the flexibility it gives you and that you can now buy online ...

Based on right now - expect a queue if you book with Alamo/Enterprise/National.
That IS the flip side of them being something like £100 cheaper than the others though.
