Hi all
Wife has a suspected torn meniscus or exterior ligament - 2 separate physio's with 2 differing opinions. Anyway she's getting help with physio and is helping a little.
Happened about 4 weeks ago whilst working in the pharmacy - twisted her knee basically.
Off skiing on 11th January and wondered if any of you have had any experience of this injury. I'm not convinced she'll be ready but can anyone suggest a knee support that could help should she be ready for skiing?
Thanks in advance

@boabski, I would suggest asking the physio, then making sure her insurance will cover her in case her knee gives out

@boabski, I have the exact same injury from Volleyball about 5 weeks ago.
I’m going to physio 3 times a week. My knee is getting stronger and he thinks I should be able to ski in a week or so.

My Wife has a swollen and painful knee. The Physio refereed her for an X-Ray, which showed up a problem under the kneecap...Maybe that would be a course of action that would pinpoint the problem for your Wife?

I have a torn meniscus. Doesn’t affect my skiing apart from a little twinge now and then.
What I do find difficult is climbing stairs in ski boots. Can’t put the strain on it - have to do one stair at a time

time to learn to snowboard? Less umph on the knee for a week, but still managing to do something.
Depends on the degree of the tear.

I've just had 4 days skiing with a torn meniscus, does cause some pain, but hurts more walking up and down stairs.
Ibuprofen will be your friend.

I've had knee hole surgery on both knees to fix a torn meniscus in each. A torn meniscus is given 3 levels, from giving no pain and no real problem, to livable with nonsurgical treatment, then up to acute giving a great deal of pain and maybe locking up, with surgery being the only real choice. So it depends where she is. I had no choice, couldn't function without constant antiinflammatories, however they are now great. They love to go to the gym! Need to keep the surrounding muscles strong.

Based on my three meniscus tears and two surgeries, I'd say live with it as long a possible. I have good days (pain-free) and bad days (minor pain, limping). Ibu and ice both help me.

I had a small tear a few years back, minor skiing injury. I continued to ski that day and the following though aware of some sort of knee discomfort / pain. When this continued at home went to see physio, he banned me from skiing for rest of season (it was mid March) and suggested exercises, basically to sit, lift affected leg so lower part is off the ground and waggle lower part of leg. Apparently this helps the torn meniscus settle down. It did seem to work as discomfort went over a few weeks. Get the occasional twinge now.
Minor edit - important to support the knee with a hand so the lower part of the leg "hangs free" whilst waggling

@Scooter in Seattle, Hi - can I ask - have you had meniscus surgery on the same knee twice?
reason for asking - had arthroscopy for meniscus 4 years ago but knee now causing pain exactly as previously experienced, hence wondering if its possible to have more than 1 arthroscopy on same knee.

No, it was one each. I’m living with the third one because there’s only so much you can snip out of there before you need to think about replacement. It has improved to the point where I don’t need to take pills right now, but with cycling season starting soon, I may have to.

@NickyJ, - how many years apart please?
I'm off to docs next week so will see what direction that takes!

I can't remember the exact history of surgeries on both knees that my wife had over 15 years or so, but they both had ACL repairs, and at least one of them a clean-up arthroscopy some years later. This was more to clear extraneous bone growth known as osteo-arthritis which is an inevitable consequence if the meniscus is no longer present across the whole joint to prevent bone on bone movement. The worst one was eventually replaced with an artificial joint.
So yeah, multiple arthroscopies some years apart are not unusual. I think one of my knees that I damaged playing cricket 30-odd years ago also had a second arthroscopy, but then that one has been subject to a much more major ACL (success) leg-straightening (also success) and cartilage regeneration (not success) surgery more recently.Pretty sure it's going to need another one, ten years on, due to osteoarthritis, but it's been a lot better these past couple of months for some reason, so I'm holding fire.
Worth noting though that there have been significant improvements in cartilage replacement/regeneration in the last couple of years, so ask you surgeon about that when you seem them as well.

@Dippy, took me a while to think of some markers ref which years it was done and approx 11yrs apart as far as I can recall. Though may have been 12yrs. As youngest was either 1 or 2... and second one was 2022...
As went skiing 5/6 weeks later with my sister so found the photos LOL.

@NickyJ, Ahh - thank you xx
Been to docs - doesnt think its Meniscus - so hopefully panic over as it does seem to be improving - I just need to be a little more patient (aint got no patience! ) and be wary of what I do for a few weeks.

So odd that this has come up on my feed, as I am experiencing some discomfort from my (I think) Meniscus.
Overweight 45 yr old bloke, started couch to 5k a week ago, been out jogging twice, and experiencing some discomfort (slight feeling of weakness / instability) on inner part of left knee just to the side of my kneecap. Obvs will book in to see GP, but that'll probably take a month (lol), so wondered if any of you experts had thoughts on:
1) Is it meniscus?
2) Torn? Or Just I'm fat and my knee doesn't like running!
Thanks!

@jellemr, could very well be lack of strength/ conditioning, esp if you’re overweight and starting back into running. Worth doing some simple strength stuff to build glutes/ quads/ hamstrings/ calves and core - a few minutes daily will make a huge a difference. If you’re seriously worried about knee pain having stated C25k then probably better to see sports physio than GP.

@Inboard, thanks. I definitely need to build strength. I went for my 3 jog on Saturday morning - went ok while jogging, but both knees were sore sat eve and sun - I think they're in shock at the workload and probably impact too. Feeling more normal today (Monday) thankfully.

@jellemr, From the limited description you give it doesn't sound particularly like a torn meniscus damage, which more typically would be a sharp pain/sensation when a torn edge gets caught. Sounds more like you may have strained the medial colateral ligament.

@Chaletbeauroc, Thanks, reading into that it does sound possible. It has started to feel a little better - I managed step 4 of the Couch to 5k last night with much less discomfort than previous efforts, so fingers crossed.

If you can actually run its not bad .
When you cant take impact from jumping running etc then its bad .
The sharp pain/sensation mentioned is fact .
