As title -- someone has started a Petition in an attempt to persuade Google to bring back ski lifts..
Currently at 146 signatures, I'm sure SnowHeads can send this figure far higher !!

I had noticed this, but thought I'd somehow screwed up my settings.
Not sure it's the end of the world, but I found it interesting, so I've signed

@albob, Not just the lifts. The pistes have disappeared too. I'm going to hazard a guess at a copyright issue with lift/resort operators or it's just too expensive to update for a relatively small group of folks.

Lifts and pistes are still in the OpenStreetMap database.

This from Reddit:
Thanks for reaching out. I’m a product manager for Google Maps. We launched ski runs on Maps as an experiment years ago as part of our ongoing work to provide people with helpful information. Over time, we’ve found that most users don’t turn to Google Maps for this type of information, and that they instead prefer to use maps directly from the individual ski resorts, since they’re seen as the most authoritative source of this information. As a result, we’ve been in the process of removing this information from Maps, which you may have noticed already.
We appreciate your offer to help us add this information but it isn’t needed, as ski run details will no longer be available in Maps. We now consider this matter to be closed.

https://www.opensnowmap.org is very comprehensive (much more so than google maps was). I do sometimes like to look at it and google maps side by side to see a what a particular area looks like in satellite view. If you then add in fatmap (yes I know that that it doesn't have quite the functionality that it did) then you should be able to get a pretty idea of what a run, piste or off piste, would be like to ski

I'm mostly using other OpenStreetMap interfaces for this - either dedicated websites (like opensnowmap or openskimap), or generic but with ski/touring/hiking etc. theme apps (like Locus Map, and, I guess, OutMap and previously FatMap?).

I don't use it in resorts at all, but have found it useful to point out to visitors how close our apartment is to the ski lifts.

Ah, that understands why I couldn't find lifts when I was responding to a SH query about Praz sur Arly.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Yep, often use it to work out where things are in resort or a bit more detail about resort. Yea I use a proper piste map when in resort, but strange for them to suggest that the feature isn't used

Google have removed ski lifts from maps for a reason. My guess is it concerns anti-trust, but we may never know.
It's very very annoying they've done this, but the petition is pointless.

Thought I was going mad. I have used Google to plan where to stay in relation to the main ski lifts in the past. While trying to find a place in Italy I just couldn't work out why the runs weren't showing, now I know. Tut tut. Google "the cause of and solution to all of life's problems!"

I'd got quite used to openskimap, as it overlaid the ski lifts and runs on a normal map. However, recently the map underneath has disappeared, leaving only the runs and lifts, which isn't that useful. Has anyone else had this issue with openskimap?

indeed, annoying. But if it is 'anti-trust' why not remove all sorts of things? -- all our houses are on street view etc etc ::
made up scenario ::: Google street view shows a road sign e.g. 'Watford and the North' - that belongs to xyz council - they complain ; does Google remove it ??
Having said that -- Google have shut down various threads on their forums regarding this issue .............. :: you are probably right on the petition being pointless, but at least we can register a vote..

There should be a setting to select satellite view?
https://openskimap.org
I use this site a lot - sometimes even on the mountain as it will show your location
Vastly superior IMO to opensnowmap as it shows the direction of travel on each run with little arrows and you can click runs and lifts to get names and info on slope gradient etc.
It’s just a shame that you can’t click on other things in the map like hotels , restaurants etc. is there a map which will do this with the openskimap overlay ?

@sheffskibod, the satellite view is showing as blank for me as well. Is it working for you?

Depends what we mean - two screenshots attached
One has terrain , slopes , lifts and labels on buildings
Second is satellite which still has runs and lifts but all the labels disappeared …
I guess what you are after is satellite with all the details ?

@sheffskibod, I was literally only seeing the lifts and runs, with nothing underneath at all. In the satellite view the background was black.
I've now figured out the issue. I was somehow on the http rather than https version. The latter works fine.

Was looking at streetview, St Anton the other day and noticed some streetview lines down some of the pistes on the mountain, now you can look around some of the pistes too as someone has skied them with one of those 360 google cameras.
