Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Courmayeur 24/25

First trip to Courmayeur this winter, since the tunnel just re opened.

Cold fresh windblown snow everywhere, and no one. Skied many laps at Plan Gabba, never had to go left field to find fresh tracks due to so few people. Zerrotta side slow to open, top never opened bit no need. Snow all the way down, cannons running no stop. Good to be back

What's possible to do off the 'new' rotating lift out of Courmayeur??

E.g. Vallee Blanche ? Is a guide absolutely necessary for this??

Any other itineraries or runs???

How much extra (if anything?) does this lift cost on top of MB unlimited pass say?

Wind scoured pistes and big crowds in Courmayeur today. Re descoverd the cafe at the top of the Val Veny Telepherique - Cosy and inexpensive.
Even Morgex was crawling with people - La Salle has great Pizza places and Cafes, at rural Italain prices Wink

Vallee Blanche, Glacer Toula, Lots of big Couloirs, The face under the Cables, Marbrees

horgand wrote:

Yes and anything else off the skyway, unless you consider Corberts in Jackson a tourist trap ratehr than difficult.

horgand wrote:

Yes loads in both Courmayeur and from Skyway

Is that the one with orange Formica tables? I’m back in Courmayuer for the first time since Feb 2020 in a few weeks, it’s one of my favourite stops, that and Chez Olier.

Is that the place not far up but to the right as you look up from the base, near a small snack bar place?

If so, top pizza and top staff there.

@ster, Chez Olier is under the Pra Neyron chair, easiest way to get to it is keep to left off the chair, right at junction, then keep to the right as you come down, it’s just after the trees finish.

Hi all, wife is just about to press the button on a girls week to Courmayeur do scatter some ashes of their mum, dad/Aunty uncle who used to take them all the time as kids. What is the snow looking like - some sites have 40cm and others have 156cm. I know more snow coming, and looks like a hotspot for this week's precipitation. Italy is all new to me so not sure where the most reliable source of info.

thanks in advance

Adrian

Rather a nice few hours today - snowing pretty reliably - not powder though - the bro' described it as "ice cream" snow, heavier than powder but nice on piste, not so much off.

Had clearly rained pretty high up yesterday.

Snowing fairly heavily in Chamonix as I speak ...

Spent a day there today, not a lot of snow depth but pistes generally really nice. A few closed presumably due to lack of snow. Hard packed in some places from lunch onwards.

it’s all starting to get in need of a top-up so fingers crossed the weather changes.

Nice a quiet especially after about 2:30.

Our first visit so we popped in to the town, looks to be a really nice place.

if you're wife likes designer gear or Italian fashion she might want to leave some space in her baggage for the return trip, or maybe you might want to encourage her to take more than she needs so there is no space Very Happy (she can also get a partial tax refund at the airport...)

Similar to Pila in that its mainly tree line, except for the higher up runs, yu also have two sides of a small ridge to choose from.

La Thuile, being generally higher and most exposed is better done in good weather

Re ski hire. The gang are staying at the IH hotel in Courmayeur itself. Our view is to hirer up the the mountain - does anybody know where is best for this hotel and how to get to the shop?

Plenty of other questions to follow - we have never been here/Italy before so all exciting but they will need some advice on Ski passes, La Rosiere, restaurants etc etc cheers Ax

The main Courmayeur central pedestrian road (Via Roma) has everything you will want/need. If you are staying at the IH Hotel you are well placed for just about everything as well. The "Bar Roma" on the main drag is a must for apres-drink with free open buffet. Plenty of restaurants/pizzerias and very good ski stuff related shopping. Try the SkyWay rotating cable car up to Helbronner, quite a trip. Eating on the mountain is a joy, however, the well known "Maison Vielle" is not at all as good as it was. I like Chiecco and La Grolla restaurants.

Enjoy

yesterday, very pleasant. front face got a bit heavy in the sun, but dried out when sun went behind after lunch. Moretta was a dream of wind blown ice cream, perfectly smooth and creamy. Oddly busy for a Friday after a very quiet Monterosa ski on Thursday.

Just advising on last minute packing for trouble and strife, has anybody got a sense of the snow line for Mond tues weds? Some are saying 800-1000 but then in detail it talks of 1500-1800 and to 2000m. Thanks

Expect snow on Monday/Tuesday, clearing somewhat Wednesday (6 hrs sunny).
Looks like fresh snow on the mountain and sleet in resort.
Freezing/snow-line looks variable 1900m down to 700m.

Yes, looks more like 2000+ at times on Monday if one looks at the detail. Never skied there so in scenarios like this for their first day which runs and part of the valley would one go to?

Thanks Mr Darcy, they seemed to enjoy their first yesterday and looks a stunner this am. Rained a lot in Chamonix to over 2000m and that in Courmayer; this is why I only look at trends on the long rangers in my posts on the weather forecast thread as the micro climate is so so important when situation is uncertain. Enjoy it ! They are there until Friday am....be careful.
