Usually found mega drive cheapest and often upgrade, just be sure to advise them of all the damage on the car before you take it on the sheet they give you. They missed quite a bit of pre existing damage on the one they gave us. Think we paid an extra 10 euros or something to be able to go through Germany.

How late?
A lot of website's will let you book hire cars for collection outside the hire car company's opening hours...which won't work out well for you when you arrive at the airport. So make sure you double-check the actualy hire company opening hours.

In my experience the Car Hire companies stay open at Salzburg Airport until after the last flight. Budget are usually the last to close.

NOT definitive but Google Maps has Budget (just as mentioned above) down as open 08:00 to 20:30 every day at Slatzburg airport.
https://www.budget.com/en/locations/at/salzburg/szg says the same, with slightly different hours specifically on 24/25 Dec. and 31 Dec/1 Jan.
And trying to book a car for pick-up at 10pm on the 21st gives "The Rental Location you have selected is closed during the hours requested.".
