Message from SATG, who operate the La Grave lift:
Auto translated version:
Postponed opening of the Meije Glaciers cable cars
Dear Clients and Partners,
We regret to inform you of the postponement of the opening of our lift lifts in La Grave, initially scheduled for December 21, 2024 to the end of January.
Technical operations undertaken early this autumn and early winter to allow for winter opening have resulted in the discovery of major failure on one of the carriers of the first section on Thursday, December 12, 2024 during the last validation checks. Therefore, we are obliged to postpone the commissioning of the facilities and the opening of the cable cars of the Glaciers de la Meije to la Grave.
So we have taken the decision to change the cable in order to ensure quality service and optimum conditions for all our customers. Safety on our facilities is our top priority, and it is therefore essential for us to carry out the work necessary to ensure the safety and comfort of our customers.
Our teams and technical partners are mobilizing to get our facilities open as quickly as possible. We'll keep you updated on the proceedings.
We are aware of the inconvenience this incident is independent of our will but your safe transportation remains our priority. Thanking you for your trust and loyalty, we will offer you alternatives very quickly to enjoy the glide on the Oisans.
We look forward to meeting you in La Grave very soon to enjoy everything that our territory offers again
Fabrice Boutet
Chairman of the SATG

Ouch! That’s a shocker for the local businesses losing 6 weeks of prime season. Hope there is some support for them

Well I've had some great ski touring there (twice) when the lift is closed, plus an amazing first tracks descent coming over from LDA.
I was having coffee yesterday with one of LGs top skiers, her ex is one of LGs guides and she didn't mention it, but she's now living this side of the Col?
Good friends run the Edelweiss Hotel there (I do the website) but I'm not about to ring them up as they must be well fecked off with it all.
And I just hope they don't all come over here, to Monetier that is, but would imagine Skiers Lodge will be running road trips everywhere to compensate.

Yeah I’m sure Pelle will look after his guests. Got 2 weeks at the skiers lodge later in the season when hopefully everything sorted by then

Yup Pele & his lovely wife will look after their guests really well as always. A later season trip to La Grave could be a super call. Skiing a fresh mountain with a refreshed lift in hopefully good to great conditions - mighty!!

Just given a lift to a La Grave based guide, and obviously took the opportunity to ask about the lift.
Evidently cable is arriving 11-14th Jan and then it will be down to conditions as to how long it will take.
It's the fixed stationary cable, and from La Grave to P2.
He was still quite frustrated that it wasn't spotted in the Summer to say the least!
He did say the ski-touring has been good!

Fingers crossed it doesn't take too long. Would have been better to spit sooner but at least it wasn't too late.

Had a long nag with my good friend who runs the Edelweiss in La Grave a couple of days ago (someone trying to scam their website), and I obviously moved on to the subject of the lift etc as I knew that the cable had arrived.
If conditions are good, could be as quick as a week, that said if the forecast for next week materializes that could delay things, but people are optimistic about the end of the month.
In the meantime, there has been a free shuttle bus around to LDA, where you pay for a pass and then ski up and over etc, and most guests have been more than happy with the arrangements.

A further severe setback to the repairs on the La Grave lift: https://alpinemag.fr/accident-chantier-telepherique-la-grave-la-meije-saison-compromise/?fbclid=IwY2xjawH8qN9leHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHece8RMXGV4wtKTTjI3dCn2DsWbjhV0XDVId0ndHldErN6Xr4zta48_4wg_aem_gzyzG-xNzlvMmxwIFCPHeg
Translation of first paragraph:
The dark situation continues at La Grave. After a faulty cable car cable was detected a month ago, the cable needed to be replaced. This Monday, January 20, a technical accident occurred, and the cable fell suddenly, damaging several pylons fortunately without causing any injuries. According to our information, the P2 pylon, the intermediate station at 2400 meters, was hit. No reopening date has been announced at this time.
Sounds like a bit of a cockup on the technical front, fortunately nobody hurt. However I expect this new development means that the reopening of the LaGrave lift will be further delayed, perhaps not running at all this season.....

“ This Monday, while work was underway to replace a faulty cable, it suddenly gave way. "It was an anchor that supported the old cable that gave way ," explains Fabrice Boutet, CEO of SATA. Before adding, "It is designed to support 85 tonnes normally and there, it gave way under 17.7 tonnes of pressure."”

That an 830kN rated anchor failing at ~170kN. Not ideal.......

If the anchor failed at much less load than it normally sees in service just imagine what could have happened if the need for cable replacement hadn't been noticed just before the start of the season and the lift remained in operation with passengers when the the anchor gave way.....

Did hear today from quite a reliable source that could be it for the season, but they did say that rumours are flying around all over the place.
What they also said, and really no big surprise, is that Serre Che is where they're taking groups skiing and touring
Mind you that always happens when the lift is shut, in fact that's how I discovered here!

@davidof, that happened to us one year when La Meije was closed and we came over to here, and then couldn't get back over the Col so the guides had to find us accommodation here in Serre Che and that ended up being quite a party I seem to recall

Reopening scheduled for March 15, 2025
Dear Customers, Dear Partners,
The SATG informs you following the incident that occurred on January 20, 2025. This event, which did not cause any casualties or injuries, was immediately handled by our technical teams. In the interests of transparency and safety, we have decided to suspend operations in order to analyze the situation in detail and inventory the damage caused. The aim of this in-depth analysis carried out this weekend was to determine the necessary actions and mobilize all the essential resources to ensure a resumption of service as quickly as possible and in optimal safety conditions.
The technical teams, our partner companies, in collaboration with independent experts, are working actively to finalize the inspections and implement all the required corrective measures. Following these analyses, we were able to set the reopening of the facilities for March 15.
A constant commitment to safety and the territory
The safety of our users, our partner companies and our employees remains at the heart of our priorities. This temporary shutdown, although exceptional in its duration and consequences, is part of our proactive approach aimed at maintaining impeccable safety standards on our facilities.
Practical information
We would like to thank our users and partners for their understanding and patience. We will communicate regularly on the progress of the work and the terms of the resumption. In the meantime, the return to operation of the cable cars, the support system for our customers remains extended. To welcome our skiers who had planned an upcoming stay in our area, SATA Group aeon is setting up a 50-seater shuttle from the La Grave cable car station with direct access to the Les 2 Alpes ski lifts.
Packages are still on sale at the La Grave cable car ticket offices between 8:00 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. for a shuttle departure at 9:00 a.m. Passengers will be dropped off at the foot of the Les 2 Alpes ski lifts for quick access to the slopes.
Receptionists will be present at the departures or during the journeys to welcome, accompany and provide information to passengers.
For the return to La Grave, meet at the foot of the JANDRI 3S from 4:15 p.m. for a shuttle departure at 4:30 p.m.
This shuttle is exclusively reserved for customers purchasing their ski pass at the La Grave ticket offices.
For season passes (non-contracted) purchased in La Grave, access to the first shuttle will be subject to remaining places and the validity of the ski pass.
For SuperNova purchased at other AEON sites, access to the first shuttle will be subject to remaining places.
In order to ensure smooth operation, please inform us the day before (before 5pm) of your intention to use it and for how many people on caisse@la-grave.com
This system will be subject to change if weather conditions change. Our customer service remains at your disposal for any questions.
