I have just booked our return Dover Calais crossing for just after New Year. We usually go DFDS, but it was coming out at a staggering £338 for a high car with roofbox, so I looked at Irish Ferries - much cheaper at £172 return. Haven't used them before but at that cost difference well worth a try. might be useful for others with high cars and roofboxes.

@RobinS, just went through the same process, shuttle, po, dfds, and Irish ferries in order of cost. But Dfds just dropped a 15% early bird discount which won it for them around a similar price. No roof box though. Didn't choose Irish Ferries because of the return crossing timings.

@BergenBergen, I didn't get offered any discount with DFDS, but got an early bird discount with Irish! Strange. The height of car, and roofbox does mean different categories with different companies, DFDS, as the car is tall (1.90) plus the roofbox it took us into the up to 3m height and 8m length, same as our campervan was, but with Irish it was just car (less than 6m long) but over 2.25m high. Fitting in different categories makes a big difference.

We travelled on DFDS today in a Tiguan with a roofbox and there was no extra charge for the roof box so I’m guessing your car is quite a bit bigger than a normal SUV. The price for us on DFDS was over £100 cheaper than your quote and at the time of booking was the same price as P&O and Irish Ferries. Today was off peak but we are coming back on a busier date. This was for a standard ticket but I think there is a bit of flexibility to be put on an earlier ferry.
We would only have booked DFDS anyway as we think they are the best operator from Dover. We also sometimes use Brittany Ferries.

@RobinS, I had to book using the web page to get the discount. If you book via the app it's full price.

DFDS also have six ferries at Dover (3 to Calais ans 3 to Dunkirk) and Irish ferries have two. But if you book Irish Ferries and miss it you might get on P&O as I think those companies have a sharing agreement.

Irish ferries have always been cheaper for my 2.1m high van, their frequency of sailings, the last time I used them, suggests they have more than 2 ferries?

@tangowaggon, they only have two ferries operating out of Dover. They did have three but one was taken off a few months ago.

Booked all my crossings with Irish last season in their 20% off sale. There's now only one boat for part of January. I've searched to find out what's going on, but no information. They've lost their competitive edge

Just booked our 5 crossings next year with the DFDS Multi Trip package at £137 per return trip. DFDS andd P&O appear to have reinstated their reciprocity agreement as 2 of our crossings were on the next boat available which was P&O.
Both P&O and DFDS have multitrip offers starting at 3 return crossings per year.

We booked our first return trip with P&O who gave the best prices for us. We are just outside the peak dates and get 6 bottles of wine free. Next Saturday will be our first day of skiing this season.

@RobinS, I've used Irish Ferries for a few years now. Absolutely fine for the short crossing over the channel. Food and drink offering isn't particularly inspiring and is pretty pricey, but I usually wait till we get to France and head to a Hypermarche anyway. We were late for a crossing in the summer holidays and they just stuck us on the next one absolutely no drama. On the way back, I was early and we got an earlier crossing, no charge, no fuss.

If you use Direct Ferries booking site
It is cheaper. Did you look at that or is there a downside to that site.

@DaveD, I took the DFDs 10am ferry to Dunkirk yesterday! Maybe it is to do with a ship being in dry dock in the new year?
