Ha!
No ski rack, I'm not nearly a good enough skier to warrant my own planks!
I've bought a cheap ski bag and I'm hoping the rentals will fit in the cabin if we need to make a hop to the prodains or ardent lift in the morning. I'm aware that half term queues for super morzine lift might not be worth it!

The forecast is showing potential for freezing temperatures in northern France on Friday night, although roads should be fairly dry. Do they treat the autoroutes for ice?

We drove back through Northern France in January during heavy snow, and there were plenty of ploughs and gritters on the autoroutes. Interestingly they have flashing blue lights (like Police)

Ditto although still doesn’t prevent cars with summer tyres careening off the road as we witnessed on one eventful drive back.

Looks like decent weather for a drive through france this weekend, downside is appears we'll have relatively spring like conditions. Oh well, at least not rain and the snow will be soft and an improvement on last two February HTs 14-15 degree sweltering sunshine.

Kids were ill today, what are the chances? Tunnel booked for 13.20, made good time caught the 12.26 one instead. Terminal seemed quiet, no great queues at passport etc.
Now on A26, dry roads, sunshine...

Joining vicariously as I track the (not so much these days) Small boy moving down the A26 on a coach with school. Those poor teachers stuck on a coach with stinking teen boys fuelled only by haribo for 24 hrs!

Nonsense, @always29. They are idle, overpaid, public servants getting a free holiday at somebody else's expense.
@jesus, will your children have to tell lies about their illness, when they get back tanned from the Alpine sun?

Been quite a pleasant drive today from St Quentin down to Grenoble. Traffic was pretty light all the way, with clear sunny skies.
Hope everyone has a safe journey down.

Want to hear a tale of woe but with good cheer?
Driving down to Val d’Isere today in our X5. Got daughter from school last night so we can leave early. Except when packing car I move the 2nd row seat forward to drop the yellow jackets behind. And it won’t move far enough back. Computer says no. Leave car ten mins and come back. Computer still says no.
Unplug battery - appears everything still has LEDs lit so that’s not resetting any computer (apart from the clock!)
Had luggage in back but now to need to repack, put skis on roof and force my daughter into the rear seats.
Except the drivers seat is all the way forward and the computer says no to moving it back.
So I call the dealer and they say “bring it it but no promises”. So we drive to dealer en route to Eurotunnel. I can’t drive like this so can’t imagine doing the whole drive like that. Unpack the car in their workshop and the technician gets to work. 30 minutes later I’ve seats that move. The computer needed to be reset and it needs a main dealer to do that.
I ask the service manager how much? And he tells me not to worry but to go on holiday.
Wow. I could have cried.
Holiday back on. Currently in Troyes in a cheap hotel. Everything was smooth as silk as we managed to get a 5pm crossing.

@AndrewBailey, I don't like cars which override what you want to do. Fancy its taking an expert 30 minutes to work out how to move the seats! Is this really progress? Glad it got sorted though - and hope you can impose your will on it for the rest of your holiday.

Good save though @AndrewBailey, and decent service to sort it out for you. It's probably a trade union work to rule set of seats
I carry a code reader @Origen, as the most benign things can trip up some uppity/stroppy ecu given half a chance. On camping trips when someone has sucked all the power out of battery by charging items, then the ecu can throw a right old mood when revived. A whole myriad of apparent error taking root, which are triggered by low voltage status system checks going ahead.

@AndrewBailey, what a nightmare, so glad you were able to wake from it in time! I think that I currently own my last car and am relieved that that is the case and that it is relatively free of gizmos. Although it too regularly - and noisily - tells me my tyre pressure is low when it isn't.

Mine very occasionally does that too. If the car is driving OK and steering straight I just carry on and stop when it's safe, have a look at the tyres, kick them (if I have the right sort of shoes on...), get back in and reset the system. I keep meaning to buy a tyre pressure gauge - I always used to have one. When I had a puncture some months, ago picking daughter up from the station (very short urban ride) the stupid system didn't activate. My daughter sensed before I did, from the uneven noise/vibration, that there was something was wrong.

Currently stationary / very slow moving on A5, 16km from the A31intersection.
Left Troyes at 9, the journey remaining time is frustratingly incrementing...

Big shout out to Eurotunnel last night. Left Guildford at about 3.45 Friday, crawled through many slow bits of traffic to the tunnel, later than anticipated but not too late. Tunnel really quiet and on the 1 after we had booked so straight on. Roads down to Reims pretty quiet.
Journey on has been better than usual, a few delays but that's all. Time to go seems sick above 3 hours though, had been for the last 2 hours!!!

When my kids were younger we spotted and counted Norbert lorries - to such an extent we had laminated tick sheets for each child! Once they were older Norbert got bought by Xpo and now hardly see their trucks. But still look out for them

Yes, the distinctive red Norberts were a feature for many years, and could be seen both on the move and gathering in flocks. Sadly they are now extinct.
