Local radio is saying that the local authorities are going to set up a contraflow through the tunnel as you approach Moutiers, but I guess that will take some time to setup. On previous occasions I’ve booked a hotel in Albertville which can be cancelled up to 6pm when I’ve thought inbound traffic might not be possible. No idea if this can be done today, but might be prudent in case it’s impossible to drive up the valley until tomorrow morning.

There's more information on the 3 Valleys thread in Snow Reports. The tunnel before Moutiers has now been made 2-way, but there will still be huge delays. Someone has posted that there is no alternative route.

SNCF app is showing relatively minor delays due to scheduled works on a different bit of the line.

sounds like the authorities are keeping the "old" road clear for locals and any emergency vehicles that may need it then.
glad to see there is a contraflow in place, but am sure it will be a long day for those caught up in it

It is now being reported that it is taking 5 hours to get from Albertville to Moutiers. The Prefecture is advising 'If you are not in Savoie, don't come today'. See https://savoie-route.fr/ for traffic information. Tour operators are apparently transferring customers to trains, so it is likely that they are going to get sold out pretty quickly. The last buses from Moutiers to resorts are at around 7.30pm https://booking.altibus.com/Reservation/SuiteWidget . Might be advisable to stop for the night somewhere well before Albertville, if en-route.

Definitely advisable to stop. We left Lyon at 11.00. Currently 15 miles short of Moutiers, have been pretty much stationary for 3 hours. Looking like a night on the coach at this rate. People are just wondering up and down the road to the coveniently located SuperU.

There are alternatives, but the gendarmes will stop tourist using them. When we were driving in that area following the boss he briefed us on what destinations to give so we could take the back roads.

@Origen, prefer to get in early, early night and early start the next morning which today looks extremely fortuitous. Was once caught up in something similar about 15 years ago on New Year’s Eve. Thinking of everyone who’s caught up in the chaos. Stay safe.

Just checked into a hotel in Macon after a pretty miserable drive back from La Plagne.
Still, could be worse. Whilst we skied on quiet, perfectly groomed pistes and crystal clear skies until about 3 and set off afterwards, I just met a man who'd set off at 10:15 this morning and it took him 9 and a half hours to clear the rock fall.
Looks like those heading to the Alps were having just as bad a time of it. The west of Moutiers were mile after mile of stationary traffic.
Safe travels everyone.

The drive down:
Left home at 07.30 to drive to Tunnel for 10.00 train.
08.45 phone call: "This is your remote monitoring service, you fire alarm has activated"
Fire?!
Call neighbours..."Smoke in the house!"
Called fire brigade and turned around.
Report: Grill was left on
Smoke in house, smalls horrible. No damage.
We've rebooked for tomorrow.

@rungsp, gosh, what an awful start to your trip. But if I did that there's no "remote monitoring service". My lodger did once smell something not quite right when I'd gone out and left some chestnuts simmering in syrup to make "marrons glacé". Saved the day.

Just back from a long weekend in Chatel.
Journey out:
Left home Wednesday at 12.30. 17.15 booking. Arrived at the tunnel early and got bumped up an hour.
Hotel booked in Troyes, arrived just before 23.00 after a quiet, gentle drive in heavy rain with a stop for a quick bite to eat.
Left hotel at 07.00, a couple of quick stops for breakfast and a wee, arrived in Chatel at 12.45.
Straight to the supermarket for supplies and into the apartment just before 14.00.
A very easy journey.
Coming back:
Left Morgins at 13.00 Monday after some fun on the snow.
Stopped at the bottom of the hill for some lunch on the go. The Jura was cold and a bit icy, with some cloud.
A quick comfort break and driver change at 16.00 and back on the go till 18.00 when we stopped for a quick bite to eat near Reims.
From there, dense fog slowed us a bit, so only time for a quick splash of fuel and driver change before finally clearing the fog and charging for our 22.16 tunnel.
Arrived at the tunnel check in at 21.44 - went straight through and on our booked train!
Back in the UK and we hit roadworks and motorway closeures - an elongated route back was forced upon us.
After a couple of quick drop offs, got home at 01.45. Chucked the stuff out the car and lept into bed.
Alarm went off at 06.00, in work at 07.00 for a long day.

Umm, this is a slightly different trip.. Four of us went fat-biking! Rode on each of the 5 days
We have to drive as taking 4 fatbikes on a plane is a no go!

Who else is off to the tunnel Friday evening? Leaving soon as possible after school finishes. Presuming Guildford, getting on to the M25 is going to be a pain.

Unfortunately our kids are starting to feel really unwell so are probably going to be ill so we may as well heading down to the eurotunnel on Thursday ( ) ready for an early start and on the 6:36am tunnel across. Weather is looking quite nice at the moment for the drive down although everything can change.

Overnight ferry from Portsmouth to Caen 2300hrs on Thursday then a (hopefully) leisurely drive down to Annecy on Friday. Early start Sat morning (although hopefully not as early as I feared now the RN90 is open) to get to Les Menuires for lift opening.
We're in a clapped out black i800 reg SN04BUS with various bits lashed on to the roof. Give us a toot if you see us!

We're on the tunnel over to calais at midday on friday, then driving down to Dijon for the night. Onwards to Val D'Isere earlyish Saturday morning to hopefully avoid the afternoon traffic. Very pleased the the rock has been removed at Moutiers!

We're leaving home at 5pm for the 8.30 tunnel, then driving straight through to Serre Chevalier. It's our first time driving through the night so I'm not sure how we'll find it. I've got Friday off work so will try to be as rested as possible before we start. OH will also drive but the middle of the night will be mainly me.
We've done overnight stays in Reims before but after last year when we checked in at gone 11pm and left again before 6am, with me lying awake most of that time checking my watch, I thought what's the point.

If it's a clear sky and starry night, the "middle of the night" is the very best time to be driving. It's the early morning (4 - 6 am) which can be a bit more taxing.

My teacher wife is getting out of work asap on Friday, straight into the car for an easy 1.5hr drive to Hull, stopping off for the finest cuisine Burger King can offer near the port.
Beg with them at the ferry check-in for priority disembark (it wasn't available when I booked).
Ferry gets in to Rotterdam at 8.45, but given there are only 2 passport lanes, if we don't get the above fast track, probably won't be out the docks and onto the road until 10am.
Google vacillates wildly on timings, but looking to head east through Holland and down straight into Germany and hug the border with France. Maybe a couple of derestricted autobahn sections will lower the ETA. Current guess is 10pm arrival into Morzine with one food and 2 fuel stops.
Old silver 911 convertible with snow tyres that we certainly won't need given the forecast. Can't imagine many snow heads are taking that route but always like to see other UK reg cars on the trips down in previous years.

@Topgeartom, we did that route Rotterdam-Basel in January. Nice and quiet on Hogmanay, no lorries and few cars, it was a brisk journey.
Priority disembark not available then either - we had to load through the stern ramp (with the freight, and use internal ramps up to car deck); there was a problem with the car linkspan at Hull apparently hence no priority option.
