Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The 2024/25 Live drive down chit-chat

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
This drive down hasn’t started well. Long delays on the M25, so 1hr late getting to the Tunnel…. Just as they go from 1train per 30mins to 1 train per
Hour.

Then, as we get to the lanes for our (slightly later) train they decide it is already at the listed weight and now there are 3 queues of us that have to wait for the next train… which is 1hr15m later. So now we’re getting to Calais 2hrs15 later than planned.

Here’s hoping the overnight drive is uneventful and we still get to the 3v in time for a late morning ski

I was being a numpty, putting code in the wrong section.

Now just gotta do all the working out of where to stop - will have to re-read through threads about where everyone is making stops

@paulhinch, Hi Paul, Yes we do have a doofer still a bit of a nightmare with that level of traffic but does help. For new year we found people in the T 30 lanes without doofers which I believe you can do but grinds to a halt or folks realising too late and desperately trying to cut across to a non doofer lane.

After checking my doofer's battery last week in preparation for setting off for the Alps on Friday morning I checked it again last night whilst absentmindedly flicking through my phone. Glad I did because it's just ticked over into "nearing expiry". Ordered another to be sent special delivery so fingers crossed it arrives in time!

I know there is some debate about how much time they realistically save on the average trip but personally I swear by them. Aside from any time saved (on a quiet run, possibly as little 5 minutes at most to be honest), they just take the stress out of the peages. No more "wait, didn't you have the ticket?", "where's the credit card?" or "you've stopped too far away, I can't reach." Definitely worth doing in my view.

Getting very itchy to get on the road now. Four more sleeps!

I usually reccon on about 10 seconds to pick up a ticket (we try and do it without actually stopping) and about 20 to pay but I always have a front seat passenger. If I didn’t then I’d get a transceiver

It can be very chilly sometimes, when you're a solo driver, getting out to walk round with a credit card (and I always wave apologetically to the driver behind!) but it does wake you up! When I drove back and forth to the Alps a lot I had a péage tag but there are very few stops, and it's not a big issue either way. The Turin ring road is another matter - so many short hops - and a doofer which works in Italy is a good thing to have.

Set off this morning at disgusting o'clock to get the 8:44 tunnel. Fortunately we were able get an earlier train.

After that, not so much fun. High winds and heavy rain for the first 2/3 of the journey meant terrible spray from all the trucks on the autoroutes, especially up until Dijon.

After that, long delays on the A43 meant Google maps re-routed us through the countryside from Lyon to Chambery. Lots of wiggly little roads and small villages. Probably the most enjoyable part of the drive actually.

Checked in to the hotel at Chambery, now for a quick bite to eat, fill up with fuel and an early start to get up to La Plagne in the morning to beat the rush from Geneva.

Setting off for Austria a week on Wednesday. Midday Chunnel, so hopefully in France at 2pm local time. Belgium, Luxembourg and then.....? Probably overnight near Karlsruhe.... Stuttgart, munchen and Saalbach the following day. Any road problems I should be avoiding? Thanks.

Heading home tomorrow after three weeks, deferred from today to allow another day’s skiing. Tank full, car packed, apartment ready to lock up. Aiming for 08:00 departure from Chatel and a leisurely trundle North to a c. 20:00 tunnel crossing. Home by 21:30. Anyone taking bets on it panning out that way? Work in the morning Sad

Definitely overnight past Karlsruhe. We stayed there on Friday night and it probably took 1.5/2 hours to get past Stuttgart on Saturday morning.

So much for 0800 departure! 0945 after clearing snow off car, a bit of repacking and a shop for breakfast in the village. Now on 1852 Shuttle departing 30 mins late, still half an hour before our booked slot. Very smooth run once over the pass with the odd slippery patch and ploughs working then across to Besancon, Gray, Langres then Autoroute North with two stops for driver changes and food. Very heavy rain St Quentin to Calais. Should be home c.2130

Left house at 04:30 arrived at tunnel just after 7am as 195062 said no queues and made 07:46 comfortably. Just changed drivers table booked at Indian in Albertville for 19:30 this evening and then leave early tomorrow morning and hopefully on slopes in St Martin mid morning on Saturday.

Luxembourg: Land of cheap alcohol & fuel & cross-border workers! Diesel has dropped to 1.50L & for gas/petrol 1.525L & 1.613L. All gas stations have same price. Avoid passing through during morning & evening rush hour (7h30-9h00 Belgium to Lux; not casting aspersions about Belgium drivers. Evening rush hour twds Germany/France or Belgium: best to avoid. Road works on A31 motorway leaving Lux to France. 'Maach lues!'

Anyone driving today (Sat 1 Feb) to Trois Valles or any of the Tarentaise resorts, be aware that there has been a large rockfall on to the N90 just before Moutiers as you are heading up the valley. The road is almost entirely blocked and traffic is at a standstill. I suspect it will take the rest of the day to clear. Not sure what arrangements for a diversion can be put in place, so it’s likely to be a very difficult day for traffic.

@rob@rar, can the gendarmes divert travellers on to the old valley road, before the dual carraigeway was built for the 1992 winter games?

donkeys ago, it used to be an old trick you could use when carrying out transfers on a busy Saturday, getting on it through a back road in Albertville and arriving in Moutier, if the n90 was chocca, but the gendarmes started blocking any vehicle that did not belong to a local resident.

presumably they could get off before the rock fall, and get back on past it?

obviously it will still take ages, but at least there would be a back up

Yep, we're stuck in the outskirts of Moûtiers - signs saying Tarentaise is inaccessible.

Currently driving on the A6 approaching Lyon. Have a friend who’s flown in and people are currently being held at the airport.

Traffic currently looking pretty terrible coming out of Lyon as well and the satnav keeps going up and up. Does anyone know what the road is like going from Albertville via Beaufort? This is the way satnav is currently directing!
