how practical would it be to rent a 9 seater ford tourneo van and driving to the alps. Its two families so 4 adults and 4 kids, 11/9/6/4. rather than two cars with a bunch of kids asking where the other car is and when will we next see each other, it seems to make some sense to bundle into one motor and with the savings of only needing a single crossing, set of tolls and fuel, rent a van. We rent kit so, it’s just clothes and the food shop in the valley to take in the van.
probably use enterprise not least because they are nearby to the outside edge of the ring road in bristol.
ViaMichelin still the better route planner for the other side of the channel? Im used to using ABRP these days to get about and make top ups,

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Via is still the best route planner I know of. I think your plan makes sense I would do it as a non stop overnight drive using two drivers.

Be sure you can take it to Europe. I had to hire a car at the last minute some years ago to drive over, only one company would allow it and it was an arm and a leg. It probably was enterprise.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Very practical. We've done it from Perth in Scotland over to Val Thorens. 2 drivers taking it in turns and definetly worked out much cheaper. Kids all kept each other entertained, stopped and did a big supermarket shop at Carrefour on way up. If you time your driving well you can get extra days skiing in before you leave and drive through the night and miss the traffic. Make sure you get a physical copy of the form VE103 – permission to take hire vehicle abroad. You can order a tag for the tolls so you just drive straight through and get a bill at the end.

@bowsaw, we've completed same before (vw transporter vehicle) hired from Berkshire going to french Alps with 8 pax.
Works well with shared driving and that, as above, overnight on a Friday to get effectively traffic free conditions and timing.
No intrinsic problem and all pretty smooth.
Have considered estate car hire like this too, from local supply company, they were OK and knew of all paperwork etc to arrange.

Having plaued the same game 3/4 years ago you might want to check you can take their cars out of the UK. The website let me book a 7 seater car, select taking outside the UK, and even pay - onpy to get a call 24hrs later to say "No".
Europcar DO let you do it, or check out https://www.vansforbands.co.uk/winter-holidays to make it a really social, child friendly drive.

the various brands in the group allow it, but you need to pay £300 for the cover and the paper work for having a hire car

@Wi11iam, Doubt you'll get any UK van with winter tyres - chains would be a requirement and may have to buy on way from supermarket or garage

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

The "Vans for Bands" offer includes winter tyres and chains

@Origen, I had forgotten them - I was thinking more the large chains etc

 You know it makes sense.

Their offer was really very good - if our van hadn't been fixed in time, it would have been a realistic option for us. When we rented a Transit to take stuff down to our apartment, more than 20 years ago - we got chains on a "sale or return" basis. It was mid December, local lifts weren't open at that stage, but it snowed. We had to use the chains, which were too big for any of our other vehicles so I subsequently gave them to another Snowhead. It wasn't a big deal, given the overall cost of the whole undertaking! Winter tyres are not essential.
