 Poster: A snowHead

Hello dear snowheads.
Got a couple of options for these resorts in early January. In terms of skiing they look fine for the group I'm going with.
My question is whether there is reliable snow in early January and whether one is more reliable than the other.
Also any general comments about which is best would also be appreciated!
Thank you!

Well Lorenzo, your thread caught my attention whereas I probably wouldn’t have picked it up straight away on the Ski Amade thread.
I don’t think that there will be any discernible difference in snow conditions between those two excellent resorts in January.
I’d always struggle to choose between the two. I’d be inclined to choose on the basis of accommodation. As resorts, I probably have a slight preference towards Schladming. The four main ski areas are all close together and linked, whereas the Gasteintal ski areas are further apart, with only Bad Gastein and Bad Hopfgastein being linked. I also think that Schladming probably has more tree lined runs, whereas Bad Gastein is a bit bleaker. Both resorts aren’t far from other Ski Amade resorts.
I’m sure that you’ll have a great time in either.

Been to both in week 2 and found the snow good in both but overall enjoyed Schladers more, also better apri ski.

Ps, If you go to Schladers, pick a hotel that's not too close to a church, the bells start early and go on forever.

Maybe it's to get you up for first lifts!?

And to answer the Q...I've not been to either, but from my research, Schladming has always appealed.
If I had a car, I think I would position myself a bit more centrally in the Ski Amade (Radstadt/Altenmarkt/Flachau) and try out a few different resorts, but near the lifts in Schladming would be a great spot without a car.

Until this winter we were Schladming regulars, it has a lot to offer. Plenty of skiing, no need to travel elsewhere during your stay, unless you like driving around on holiday. Snow should almost certainly be fine, the northerly aspect makes its vulnerability to rain/warmth at that time of the year unlikely.
Are you all confident skiers? If not, staying in Rohrmoos-Untertal on the Hochwurzen mountain is the best location. A five minute bus/taxi to Schladming town centre if you want to sample the historic vibe or apres ski.

I've not been to Schladming but have been to Bad Gastein/Hofgastein a couple of times and going again mid January. It’s a great area and there is some varied skiing when you include Dorfgastein and Sportgastein - all linked by a decent bus service. I actually prefer Bad Hofgastein as it’s a more traditional Austrian town/village, Bad Gastein is a little higher up on a step in the valley and is more built up. Both towns have great spa facilities and hot spring baths. In Bad Hofgastein there is a huge spa with outdoor heated pools called the Alpentherme which some hotels are linked to.
The skiing in Dorfgastein is very enjoyable with some nice wide runs and is linked to Grosarl in the next valley.
The linked ares of Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein are the most extensive in the valley and have some very varied terrain. One of the longest runs in Austria is from the top of Schlossalm back to Hofgastein.
Sportgastein at the head of the valley is a completely different kind of area, quite a bit higher and is virtually completely open with trees only for the last few hundred metres. The views from the top are stunning.
So I’d recommend it as an area but I can also see why a lot of people would suggest Schladming due to it being easier to explore other areas like Flachau, Wagrain etc. In fact this year I’m planning to get out of the Gastein valley on a couple of days to visit some of the Ski Amadé areas.
Anyway hopefully that will give you an idea of what the Gastein valley is like if you find a good deal compared to Schladming.
