Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

RV .. April - skiing?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Ok. Bear with me.

I am about to, upon recommendation from a family member, book a one way RV rental from 9th April onwards from Pisa. I have to drive it back to the UK taking 7-10 days.

My original plan was to drive through Switzerland as I haven’t been (short of the bits the pds give access to and briefly in GVA) then I thought maybe we could get some skiing in somewhere, the notion of this wasn’t to do it in spring time originally but the dates are non negotiable. It doesn’t have to be Switzerland but somewhere vaguely on route back to UK).

My questions for you snow heads are - where would you recommend? Is it likely skiing is possible given the time of year? Are most places closed? Can I get the RV to anywhere close to anywhere I am able to ski? Is there an obvious place to do this?

Welcome views - ta!!

Maybe a little out of your way but it's meant to be very pleasant down at Venosc below Les Deux Alpes which has good late season skiing and should be open.

Thank you T bar - I have been to L2A so familiar with that set up there. Do these places have anyway to keep a van? Laughing

Think so according to the website it has the following places.

73 Emplacement classified
69 Emplacement caravane
67 Camper van pitch(es)
1 Accessible to disabled persons

I imagine all the campervan pitches will be good for RV's
You may need to book in advance.

@v1cky24, sorry can’t help answer your question… but can you let us know where you’re booking the one-way RV rental? Sounds like it might be a bit of a good deal?

Hi, Easter is late this year 20 April and that's the closing date for many big resorts. With a camper you might be better off either going Aosta Valley then Chamonix or Susa Valley, Montgenerve, Les Deux Alpes and Alpe D'Huez.

There is a good sized park just off (iirc) red 3 as you approach Grund from Wengen. It literally at the side of the piste.

I think it's too late in the season for Wengen. Need to go higher. Manlichen closes on 6th April

@v1cky24,
Think there is a site (Le Reclus?) in Seez, just past Bourg st Maurice on the road to Tignes.

@v1cky24, just looked up the re-location deal on their website, it looks great (especially as the channel crossing is included), i would have liked to do something like this in the future, but unfortunately i have just accrued 9 points on my license over a four day period for going 23mph in a 20 zone on 3 occasions in central London, so will have to wait 3 years until license is clean again Sad Sad

hope you have a great time, and look forward to a trip report in the future

Go to Zermatt, then Verbier.

When driving, be very aware of Swiss speedlimits and speedcams.

Even a few mph above the limit can land you in the slammer.

@terrygasson, sorry to read that Terry! Hopefully you can do one of these in the future!

@Whitegold, Good to know! It’s things like this that are invaluable. Not that we would speed massively but if even a few mph over gets you in big trouble it’s worth keeping an eye on.

I’ll be checking back on this to sort out my itinerary - thanks all for the suggestions

@v1cky24, how about Pila ski area, staying in Aosta or close by, there’s a gondola up the ski area with lots of parking, the van wont have winter tyres and they may not allow chains to be fitted, also look at La Thuile staying down in the valley at Pre St Didier as long as the ski bus is still running.
