Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Peisey-Valland VS Les Arcs 2000

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just hoping I can get some help choosing between two accommodation options for April 2025.

Option 1: Residence Arrolles in Arcs 2000 - it appears to be at the 1950 end of the area and linked to the rest of 2000 by a drag lift.

Option 2: Peisy-vallandry, 100m from the Vanoise Express and close to the Peisey chair lift.

Both options are a similar price!

Which one would be the best choice for a (very) nervous beginner?

My understanding is that at Vallandry they can take one lift up and be in the beginners area, but that they might struggle to ski down via Foret, but can get the lift instead (and just a short walk to the chalet).
I'm struggling to work out if they will be able to ski back to the apartment in Arc 2000- some reviews mention a steep/ busy slope to ski back. If they can't ski back I am worried it might be a long walk via a couple of lifts/ elevators - does that sound right.

Any advice on both areas and specifically Lea Residence Arrolles will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Ali.

@Ali in the alps,
I can’t quite think where Les Arolles is in Arc 2000 but there is a good residence near the piste called La source des Arcs. The advantage of going to 2000 is that you are going late season so the runs above Arc 2000 might have the best snow. However they can get busy as everyone migrates up there when the temps are mild. The run between 2000 and 1950 can get very chopped up late season so would not always be easy for beginners.

The beginners area above Peisey is very nice and less crowded. You can ski back to resort on a gentle blue. However late season if the conditions weren’t optimal you could take the gondola down.

Peisey Vallandry might be your best bet if you don’t mind downloading if conditions aren’t optimal. Having said that they usually work hard at maintaining the snow in that area to keep the link to La Plagne open.

@snowymum, it's looks like it's just down the hill from Chalet Altitude (not sure if that's a well known chalet?!)

@DaveD, thanks for the quick reply. Do you know far it is to get from the bottom of the Peisey chairlift to the Vallandry gondola to walk?

@Ali in the alps, it’s a long walk. However, the peisey lift is set up. For beginners and used to do downloads as well. I would check where the ski school meeting place is.

We stayed in Chalet Altitude (2000), and whilst there is a drag from the road in front of it, up to the ski lifts and a run down beside it, its not always easy. But there is a lift inside the buildings nearby which provide an alternative for pedestrians and those carrying skis. Arc 1950 & 2000 are joined by a lift for pedestrians as well as those carrying skis.

@CaravanSkier, thanks so much. Would a nervous & cautious beginner be able to ski back to the centre of 2000? Is it far to walk from the centre to the area where Chalet Altitude is?

@Ali in the alps, Sorry, but its really hard to answer your question definitively because snow conditions are very variable. And also a lot depends on the fitness/age of the skier. We had friends staying in another apartment in Chalet Altitude the year we were there, one of whom was a complete beginner, she had no problems. But she did need to use the 'inside; lift rather than the drag/run down between where the magic carpet was/the 'centre' which has shops facing a couple of ways and the chalet. I would say that if the complete beginner can walk in their ski boots (not too far but still walk) rather than always ski it should be fine. But there are so many variables from season to season.

My report on our trip is somewhat out of date but is here if it helps https://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=2435740&highlight=arc+2000#2435740

I should add that there is a significant sharp drop to the Chalet Altitude from the ski area above. Short but think the steps between house floors.

Hopefully a final question....

How easy is it for a beginner to ski from the top of the Peisey lift to the other beginners area at the top of the Vallandry lift. It will be too far to walk from our chalet to the Vallandry gondola.

 You know it makes sense.

@Ali in the alps, Very easy. It is a gentle blue and the snow is usually good up there as it’s high and not that busy. However a complete beginner might need a first morning’s lesson in a dedicated beginner area so maybe they could take the vallandry gondola the first day. Where is the ski school meeting point?

@snowymum, thanks Eh oh! again, you're very helpful!
Do you know if there is a bus going between the Peisey chair and the new Vallandry gondola ( last question I promise!!) or would we have to walk?

@Ali in the alps, I’m happy to answer questions but I’m afraid I don’t know the answer to that. I have enjoyed skiing Peisey Vallandry runs many times but never actually stayed there. (Have stayed in 1800, 1950 and 2000 over the years). Maybe if you ask on the Les Arcs thread someone will be able to help.

@Ali in the alps Can I ask why you'd need to walk between the two lifts? They both end up at a very similar point (To the left and right of the main piste above PV) and there are easy blues to get you to the beginners area

@skitrack, that literally answers my question perfectly. I couldn't work out if it was easy to ski between the two areas. Thank you very much indeed

@Ali in the alps

I'll clarify Smile

The Peissey lift takes you out immediately above a beginners section which has a baby drag. The Vallandry gondola is the other side of the "main" piste and above a different beginners area. There is a kiddies run "Foret des Pitchous" (play area for little ones - tubes to hit, hands to bump etc) which comes out near the baby drag.

If your beginner is up to it, they can lap around this area using the 2300 chairlift. It's a lovely bowl to practice in.
