As is the tradition on the Tignes thread I do a weekend travel forecast. As air travel tomorrow is going to be fraught with difficulties I thought it might be worth starting a one off topic. Here is a view on the travel weather for tomorrow. Basically, the message is stay alert for changes and cancellations. There are a number of factors which make this worse:
The wind tonight, some aircraft may not make it back to their intended destination tonight - particularly Bristol and Manchester.
The deep low is crossing the country Liverpool to Hull so there will be massive changes in the direction of the winds. So there may be windows when the wind is strong but down the runway, it then may become a crosswind out of limits.
The headwinds may result in a reduced flow rate for landings at busy airports, as the aircraft have a lower speed across the ground - May be a player at LHR and LGW tomorrow. The first flights to get axed will be the UK ones, eg BA from Scotland and MAN. This may happen tonight.
It’s going to be showery and the wind speeds increase around the showers, this is when they are looking out of limits. Again this turns into a lottery as to whether you arrive or not.
The wind speeds in the south west may exceed ground handling limits for stuff like air stairs and baggage containers.
As it affects the whole of the UK, there may be a limit on diversion airfield availability so again an overall reduction in flights maybe imposed by National Air Traffic Services
The forecast are only in force till 1200 for most airports, I’ll do an update later.
So by major airport:
LHR - Crosswinds may exceed limits in the morning, a big headwind in the afternoon may result in a reduced flow rate.
LGW - Significant periods where crosswind will be close to or over the limits.
LTN - looking OKish.
STN - very gusty in the afternoon- potential for issues.
BHX - crosswind issues later in the PM.
MAN - May be closed tonight and crosswind issues all day in showers
LBA - looks OK at the moment!!
NCL - crosswind issues during showers.
BRS - may be shut tonight and unlikely to be open tomorrow morning with gusts to 70mph
EDI - should be OK
GLA - should be OK.
There will be lots of heavy showers so the runways will be wet compounding the problem expect some deliberately firm landings.
And when the cabin crew say fasten your seatbelts tightly - they mean it!!
Good Luck!

How unusual is it for them to be so far south?

It is a bit unusual, they normally pass further north giving most of the UK a south westerly all day - which is where the runways point.

If you had Kirklees as your council you'd understand why there tends to be a deep low over Huddersfield!

BRS has eased a bit for my 12:55 flight, but is pretty bad (G65) until noon. As long as the earlier planes can land, may be OK.....

Wind direction hopefully straight down the runway at LBA. Be a first if it stays open and Manchester closes.
Good luck all

Watching the storm tear down the Christmas decorations in town tomorrow will probably be much more exciting than watching them being turned on

The latest forecasts have been published, if anything they have increased the strength of the gusts in the London area. This will not help! The crosswinds will build at Edinburgh later in the afternoon which will make landings tricky at times.

Millions sent government alert as Storm Darragh approaches
Around three million people in parts of Wales and south-west England have been sent an emergency alert from the government as Storm Darragh approaches the UK.
It is the largest use of the warning system yet and has been sent to the mobile phones of people in areas covered by the Met Office red weather warning for the storm.
The alert made a loud siren-like sound when it was delivered to devices, even if they were set on silent, and lasted for around 10 seconds.
The Met Office issued a rare red warning - the most serious type - earlier on Friday for wind.

It’s not only landing in high winds that’s problematic. IIRC Having landed during Storm Ciara in 2020 we had to wait on board for a couple of hours before it was safe to get the steps to the door and then we were pushed out in small groups, not allowed to go until the previous one had got on the ground.

Student child immensely lucky to have been on the flight between these (1240) that was initially posting a 3h delay and eventually left a minute early.
She had opted for a leisurely departure once the delay was posted resulting in a panic and last minute uber to Heathrow. Feel sorry for all the students and early season travellers whose trips are disrupted as it looks like a fine week once today is out of the way. Safe trips all. Thanks again to those who posted on the thread as it never even occurred to me there could be delays!

@MorningGory, The long range flights have started taking off from Bristol presumably hoping to return after the wind dies down. As they are sunshine destinations, in the main, Easy will also ensure their EasyJet Holiday customers get there- thus avoiding large claims under the package holiday rules.
Good luck tomorrow!
