Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

French sim card for season

So, following on from my last post, daughter is now in situ in Reberty, not VT so my cheapo apt is literally 200m (in a straight line) form her chalet!!

Next issue, despite her telling me it was all in hand rolling eyes is she needs a French sim card or esim for her iphone 12. Or at least, I guess that's the most cost effective solution?

Any advice on best deals to go for as I can barely manage my mobile in the UK, never mind abroad!!

Thanks in advance!

@Ski Tyke, IME for mountain towns, best deal is often a function of best coverage, not best price. She needs to check the coverage maps (and speak to locals, and check her own roaming signal strengths) and work out which operator is best.

I use Orange, via a real SIM. Costs me about E30/month for unlimited (or near as dammit) data. But if there's poor Orange coverage, that would be a bad recommendation.

The eSIM market seems quite competitive, with comparison websites, so see what you come up with there. But it won't tell you the best operator for 3V.

@Ski Tyke,
Tell her to ask around in the seasonnaires bars for best coverage suggestions.

Might be worth asking her current provider. I’ve just renewed my EE contact. I said I would prefer to remain as it was an old contract that allowed EU roaming. Quick as a flash she gave me permanent EU roaming and an uplift to 50Gb, which is about 40 more than use.

SFR good coverage and they have a sort of cheapie option https://www.red-by-sfr.fr/ esim available, though better coverage with Orange in VT, so maybe SOSH (orange cheapie version) https://www.sosh.fr/

Freemobile is by far the best IME - she can get a sim card from a machine in a La Poste. However, if she doesn't intend to keep it after the season ends, don't take the contract option as it's a PITA to cancel. Just buy a new card/top up every 30 days. https://mobile.free.fr/

RWG Mobile travel SIMs:

Very cost effective and will have the advantage that they will pick up on any network.

Me and daughter are also on EE and don't pay extra to use it in France. So far not been cut off as threatened to move to Tesco who also do be or did free roaming. Why pay twice and change your number for no reason?

Another vote for asking your UK provider - mine let me keep free European roaming as part of my contract when I explained that I travel and work in the EU for much of the year and so I needed the UK phone to be working and affordable rather than paying for their "pay £X per day for EU calls and data" package. For someone working in France for 3-4 months this should be available - particularly if you're a long-standing customer and/or your contract is up for renewal.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

@quinton, hi, thanks. She is on a monthly sim only contract with IDmobile. I just assumed roaming would be cost prohibitive but will investigate.

As far as I can see, IDmobile allow customers to use their phones in France for free as part of their normal contract.

For our phones we just use our EE sims (we have old sim only contracts which still include roaming) for our 4g WiFi in the van we get a free Sim out of one of the shop machines.

Reglo Mobile from Leclerc supermarket (French equivalent to Tesco Mobile) and uses the SFR network.

Monthly pay-as-you-go and you can switch between each tariff every month. I usually to drop down to the cheaper 10Gb €3.80 tariff out of season and then bump it back up to a higher one before the start of the season.

Currently, 200Gb on 5G for €7.80. There are other options for less or more data depending on what you need.

So I checked with current UK provider, IDMobile and she gets free roaming! Would never have thought to look as I just assumed all that had finished nowadays!
Officially they only support for 63 days roaming in 4 months but the live chat bod said constant use til April '25 not an issue.

Thanks for all your help, glad i asked the question now!

@sno trax do you need a bank account direct debit to register with reglo or can it be done with a credit card?

@Snowbikers, It's been a while since I set up the account but I do remember that I had to provide ID (UK Passport was fine). If you buy the SIM card in-store, they do the registration and ID check at the customer service desk when you buy it. Otherwise if you order online you need to upload to the account or email a copy. I have done both (and also migrated numbers from SOSH and RED).

I have an automatic renewal for my SIMs and so pay monthly DD from a French bank account. No reason to think that a Revolut account or similar won't work too.

I think you can also 'top-up' your balance by card and so maybe you can do also auto renew this way too.

On their website under the Assistance page, there is a subsection called 'Documents à télécharger'. There is a document 'Fiche de démarrage rapide' which does seem to indicate you can use a card as there is a section for card details.

https://www.reglomobile.fr/assistance/documents-telechargeables

You need to switch tarrifs (up or down) a few days before the new month is due to renew. Great for saving a bit when you are not using them.
