 Poster: A snowHead

Hi all - just wondering if anyone has used skiing for the physical section of the DoE. Any tips?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Much easier and cheaper to trog over part of the Pennine Way.

My 13 year old is currently doing his DofE. He's planning to learn to snowboard for his physical.
It says that he should be working for the equivalent of 1 hour a week on his physical, but we plan to get him lessons a couple of weekends a month, which should work out to the same amount of hours, but compressed into less sessions.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Owlette, is his school/ assessor definitely ok with that? My son’s school was quite strict on the regularity of the various activities (physical, skill and social service) being weekly where possible.
@Origen, that’s expedition, totally separate from physical.

You'll need to Register first of course.

If skiing can done regularly, as per doe reqs, to show the commitment to the activity no reason why not.
We have a dry slope near us so my son was able to join the youth ski club and their weekly training sessions. TBH his main driver was the skiing rather than ticking off DOE.

Ah, OK! I'm obviously ignorant about DOE. My 14 year old grand-daughter told me a bit about it and was v disappointed not to make the cut for her school's DOE - well oversubscribed. There does seem to be a fair bit of box-ticking. She is very keen on netball and has been going to after school club sessions in addition to school lessons and fixtures for a couple of years, so I guess that would tick her "physical". Skiing or snowboarding really only feasible for someone who lives near enough to a dry slope with a club, I suppose.

We live within an hour of two dry slopes, so there is opportunity to practice. His Assessor will need to be the snowboard instructor, but I will double check with the DofE lead at his school.
Given that he will be learning to snowboard, I feel that chunking it into 2 two hour lessons a month rather than 4 one hour lessons is going to be far more beneficial to his progress.
That's how I'm selling it to them anyway.
Eldest is doing the physical last as an incentive to keep going through the volunteer and skills sections as that's the bit he's most keen on. So by then, he will have a solid portfolio of shoeing his commitment each week. To his credit, he's up and at Parkrun every Saturday by 0845, even when he's absolutely shattered (he's currently doing that for his volunteer).

Good for him - and an excellent "volunteer" example.

I recall signing off a couple of DoE candidates after a number of weeks coaching.

Thought about it for Jnr - decided against it as you have to show about 3 months of weekly commitment to it. As he already does Rugby for physical he is going to try to pickup learning guitar again.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

We've signed off a few over the years. 6 hour beginners course, private lesson, a few open practice sessions, another lesson, more practice sessions, repeat till you've done enough. Not the cheapest way to do the physical section.
My daughter used learning to be an instructor as her skill for Silver, and the boss's son has now done the same. In fact, that reminds me, I'm supposed to be his assessor, so I'd better get the paperwork done!
