Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Madonna di Campiglio before Christmas?

Thinking of going for a week before Christmas (18-24 Dec). Anyone been and would recommend? Worried it will be crowded given the proximity to Christmas and there may be lift queues and crowded pistes etc. which I want to avoid.

Failing that, anywhere else in Italy you'd recommend that's uncrowded at this time of year? I'm an intermediate skier.

My experience of Italian villages and ski mountains is that things are pretty quiet all the way up to Xmas Eve, the nation works until about that date.

Yeah, you should be OK, Italians love to ski after Xmas, particularly at New Year.

So as long as you can get some accommodation for the odd duration, you should be OK as far as crowds go.

Obviously you want to keep an eye on the snow, they are making it and a lot of the pistes are getting a coating, but no significant amounts of natural snow have fallen yet this winter in the Dolomites. snowHead

@Palas222, best thing to do is wait and assess conditions and forecast a few days or a day before. Things could be great there. Things could be better in the Dolomiti Superski. Things could be better in nearby Austria.

My experience of the pre-Christmas week has been generally great - very quiet slopes and loads of accommodation options. You will see a big jump in numbers on the 21st as the Christmas punterini arrive. I usually book flights to Innsbruck, Verona or Venice well in advance and then make a late decision on where to ski.

Thanks very much all I really appreciate the replies and knowledge! Am going to hold tight for a few days and nervously keep an eye on the forecasts and web cams. Can see they are running the snow cannons at least but not much snow forecasted currently unfortunately.

Also considering Sestriere/Bardonecchia too as forecast seems a bit better. Always a
risk this early in the season I guess!

Pistes are looking mostly pretty good with a bit of snow in the last 24h on top of the artificial base and a few skiers about too....

Snow may be heading that way at the weekend to pretty things up a bit more!
