Hi, can anyone tell me how long it would take to ski from Le Fornet to the centre of Val D'Isere? Planning ski school and was hoping to ski over, rather than bus! Thanks

Ages as it involves 3 lifts including the up and over lift. The Vallon d'Iseran Gondola is being replaced with a faster gondola but I reckon that the whole journey would be in the region of 40 minutes depending on how fast you ski. Coming back you only need the Solaise Express and the Laisinant express

@Kentishskier, Welcome to Snowheads. @rambotion, is correct on the time, but you also have to take into account the opening times of the lifts as they are progressive. It would probably take you until 0945 -1045 the way down from the Solaise can be challenging, even the red is A level. The bus will take 8 minutes, chill and have another coffee!

Good point, thank you!! Are the busses really as easy as they sound? We've seen such queues / scramble for a place on the bus in other resorts... there would be 10 of us trying to get on, including small kids! One family has hired a car for their airport transfer, is parking possible in the centre? Thanks again

Never stayed in Le Fornet but the busses generally are very frequent and reliable and as Le Fornet is not particularly heavily populated I don't imagine the busses from there in the morning will be particularly bad.

@Kentishskier, You are at the start of the line, so they are not likely to be full, just don’t wait until the last one that you need. Parking in the centre may be possible depending on the week but will cost you €20 a day ish.

Another factor with using a car is that you may not be able park at a convenient spot for the ski school meeting place.

My favourite corner of the Espace Killy, I have stayed there before and have also got the bus into the centre for 9am and it was basically deserted. if you don't need to be in Val D`Isere first thing then take your time and enjoy the area, it has some great runs for all abilities and is typically very quiet for the first 90 minutes of each day. Some years ago at Christmas I'm fairly sure that I got a lap of the Cascade Express in with my family with no one else using the lift for the time it took us to get up and ski down again!

We stayed in Le Fornet a few years back , we were a group of 12 , with 6 kids all in ski school first thing and some very small. It was easy bus was always empty and drops very close to the ski school meeting points. Arguably was easier than staying in resort centre the next year as had to walk with skis and kids for few hundred meters.
Going to have a great time in Le Fornet , the new lift should be a great improvement, just hope it doesn't make that area too popular as its always quiet.
Buses are great in Val D'Isere, ditch the car in a car park and forget about it.

I think you may even have to get a bus from the car park to town centre proper. The busses are pretty good.

@Kentishskier, one other point is where to get off the bus. It's been a few years since I stayed there so it may have changed (no doubt regulars will correct me if that's the case) but you need to stay on the bus when it gets to the centre and carry on left through the tunnel to the terminus. You are then close to the ski school and also higher up, so easy to get to it.

given the location of the ski school meeting point wouldn't 4 lifts be more realistic? and note what DCG says too.

I assume you mean for drop off for ski school. Basically no. At least not anywhere practical near the ski schools. There is a road - Rue du Parc des Sports - where all the posh Land Rovers, etc. drop off their clients but you mostly have to double park and definitely wouldn't be able to leave your car there unattended and take your daughter to ski school then return.
The Train Rouge bus service is excellent and if you hop off at Pl. du Rond Point des Pistes you will be at the top of a very gentle (barely green) nursery slope down to the ski school meeting points. Remember to hold your nerve and stay on the bus when you get to the centre until it has gone through the tunnel then hop straight off then (with the majority of other people). It should say Rond Point on the front of the bus btw. This is also where the Solaise and l'Olympique gondolas depart from so you can go and have a great ski straight from drop off while your daughter is in ski school.

I'm going to be staying in Le Fornet in Feb, so this has been a useful read, although I was previously told that the bus connections from town are excellent and run late. For me, as long as I can get back from the Folie Douce without too much hassle in the early evening, it's all good...
Also good to know that there is a new lift opening, although I'd sort of guessed crowds would be less of an issue than in Val d'Isere 'proper'...
For those that do know Le Fornet well, are there any worthwhile bars or restaurants we should pay a visit to?

No problem with that, by the time Folie closes, buses will still be every few minutes. It can get a bit of a scrum in La Daille for buses back into town at that time of day though. To get up to Le Fornet you will need to stay on through the tunnel and back before it continues up.

If it’s a real scrum you can sometimes hop on the bus on the other side as people are getting off before it turns around. You have to be subtle about it and sometimes they don’t let you, but the worst is that you have to cross back over the road which can also be advantageous for the queue if you time it right.
