Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Also, OP, the chairlifts are no different to anywhere else?

I have a love hate with chamonix valley.
I tend to love places when the snow's good, and dislike them when it's not. Chamonix, to me, is more extreme in many respects. You would not plan a resort that way if you were building it from scratch. I think it's important that folk know what it is and what it isn't.

Some people here live there; what they say seems to me to be wise.

Argentiere / GM on a snow day isn’t fun. Your beginners less competent skiers will struggle with this. ...
The first bit of this suggests you're doing it wrong; the second bit I'd absolutely agree with. As someone said, it's the place to be on a powder day.... but not if you don't like powder or off-piste snow or... all that stuff.

My opinion is broadly that if you have to ask, it's the wrong place for you. Once people know enough to know why they want to go, they'll lap it up for what it is.

@phil_w, I think that’s pretty spot on.

@phil_w, my experience is from one day of literally zero visibility. Zero. People littered all over the slope. I don’t think many people would enjoy that. Powder hounds or not.

If you like living life on the edge fair enough Shocked

Understood. But if the visibility is poor then I'd just find some trees.
Riding open runs in poor visibility isn't going to be fun at any resort.

The locals here can likely tell us where they ride in poor viz.
The ski-out from Grandes Montets was mostly cut through trees and likely has much side-piste stuff for the more intrepid,
but I'm sure there are other places too.

I'm no expert on GM - skied about 10 days there I guess. But much as I think it is a wonderful place to ski, it wouldn't be my choice on a zero viz day unless you know the place like the back of your hand or are being guided by someone who does. AFAIK the off-piste routes through the trees to the base tend to be couloirs with substantial avalanche risk - you need to know where you are going and what you are doing.

OP seemed to find the runs at Flegere too difficult and too busy, would probably solve both of those. In fact the LH runs down the front side are a lot of fun.

I'm heading to Chamonix on Saturday 18th to Wednesday 22nd. Can anyone there provide an update on snow conditions please? Some people and reports are saying its fine and others reporting rain and sticky snow. We are staying in Cham near the Brevent lift so will mostly be there. Thanks in advance!

Piste conditions are very good at the moment at Brevent/Flegere. Good cover, good quality, and cold weather keeping it that way.

great! we thanks again for all the feedback here, we made a plan, we are about to start this weekend, I am sooooo looking forward. We will start with Vormaine to make everybody comfortable and then hit the slops in Balme. I got 3 days pass for everybody so maybe we will try on the 4th day Les Houches (although I checked the weather and the second half of the week it might be raining / snowing) Lets see.

One more thing, someone here wrote that the train might be this year not included in the tourist card. Can someone confirm that? I havent seen any info on the official webpages

@lifetrip, train still looked like it was on tourist card 2 weeks ago when I took it, plenty of people using the card!

If freezing level is above 2000m and it's raining below that, I wouldn't go to Les Houches. Almost all the lifts are open to the elements (apart from the main bin up, and the last thing you'll want to do is ski all the way to the bottom in those conditions). However, if it's snowing at valley level, Houches is great as the trees really help with visibility.
