Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

How many sets of thermals do you typically pack for a week?

One set for two weeks easy! As long as you shower each day (why wouldn't you) then merino is fit and forget!

My socks however (SK4's) get washed every three days...

Two thermal tops, one 3/4 length thermal bottom, three pairs of quality socks.
The thermals and socks should be washed at the end of each day. They dry really quickly and are ready to wear the following morning.

This is actually the main reason I'm down to 2 sets. Since I discovered 3/4 length bottoms I don't bother bringing my old low tech full length ones.@Bob,

I don't think the washing of thermals, especially "treading them in the shower" (yes, done that) is a big deal. Ski accommodation is generally so overheated that they dry overnight. But generally I do think people wash clothes far too much. There was some silly thing on social media a while with some being horror struck that anybody would wear pyjamas for more than one night! I think water - a precious resource - is far too cheap. It should be universally metered and sufficiently costly to deter people from insisting on clean clothes, bath towels etc every day.

But it does depend on the person. I can wear merino thermals for days (and do regularly on the boat) without them being smelly.

At least, I don't think they're smelly......

I used to take too much now I take 2 tops and 2 bottoms. 2 das with one, day 3 use set 2 and wash set 1 and leave on the towel rack to dry set 1. 2-3 pairs of decent socks.

@Origen, there was a lady in the Facebook Ski Club who seemed genuinely appalled that people weren't all not only putting fresh thermals on every day but also a fresh set of clothes each day after skiing. I've always wondered why some people need so much luggage and I guess this in part explains it.

I am fortunate to have a washing machine, couldn't cope with 3 lots of men and their socks otherwise. Dirty stuff goes in, once it's full, it's turned on. Hung up in a corner in the morning and dry by the time we're finished skiing, as we have underfloor heating.

We installed wire baskets above all the wall heaters in our apartment (two in the living room, one in each bedroom). They were sold as holders for plant pots (think geraniums on the terrace). They were perfect for gloves, neck warmers, balaclavas and the like. They were always full when there were many people around - one just walked in and threw gloves in there automatically. We also put sturdy hooks really high up, above the heaters, primarily for damp ski jackets, but occasionally useful for bits of hand washing too.

And yes, it did look untidy when there were lots of people in the place! One of our French neighbours was so taken with our wire baskets over the heaters that my OH bought (from the UK) and installed one for them as a present . They were worried, quite rightly, about renters putting stuff direct on the heaters if there was no alternative.

The atmosphere in the Alps is generally, year round, much less humid than in the UK. So stuff - even a pair of denim jeans - dries quite quickly, compared to home.

@Belch, Indeed I actually think that packing more mid layers is a bigger concern than merino thermals. They can really take the stink on that the good thermals don't.

I basically just empty my undies drawer and leave 3-4 pairs available for when I get home.

2 leggins, 2 tops ( 3 if sking 2 weeks), which all get used for 2 days (couple of hours on rad after each use) then washed in the shower.
Clean socks every 2 days, which are dried on the radiator after each use.
If I have an outside area, I leave all the days ski gear out overnight for the cold to kill off bacteria.
(Just remember to bring them in before you have breakfast wink )

I cba to wash socks, so they get dried (keeps the smell down) then put in a bag in the luggage.

Couple of long sleeve T shirts, worn 2-3 days, depending on amount of sweatiness.

Couple of mid layer jumpers, 1 zip up layer. Number of layers used depends on conditions.

3 pairs of gloves, always carry a spare pair in the back pack.

one or two bottoms, three or four tops and two pairs of socks. However last year I took a bit more because I had bought a new set and also took the old things. I didn't wear the termals. The temperatures were crazy, with an extreme of 16 degrees celsius on the mountain (around 1869 m).

Exactly this. I might take a 3rd top just as a warm layer when not on the slope but that's mainly cos I've a load of crap ones at home before I discovered decent gear and the difference it makes.

In all fairness I do put a clean set on for helicopter rides mostly so I don’t distract the pilot.

Mons Royale merino - works great. Definitely starts to stink after a couple weeks but functionally works great for 4 months and then just chuck it in the bin. I work anti social hours in winter so nobody cares, and my dog still likes hanging out with me Very Happy

Yep, 2 of each. Wash alternate days.

Except socks. I bring as many as the days I expect to ski. They don’t take up any space (inside boots). Some trips, I have more socks than I need because I use them to fill corners etc.

Indeed. It seems to many people 'thermals' means underwear.

If I'm going to Canada for some crispy -30C mornings, then I take thermals: inner socks, inner gloves, long-johns, face mask, etc. And it's still fricking cold.

There’s base layer. Then there’s underwear.

Some people wear ‘thermals’ as their base layer. Perhaps some people wear them without ‘underwear’?

Yep, that's me! The less seams/waistbands the better!

I like a balanced approach to my ski layering; wearing an extra layer on the warmest part of my body makes no sense to me - I want to avoid sweating there!

@abc, perhaps this is a trousers/pants kind of thing?

'Thermals'?

a) underwear more thermally insulating than normal - used for cold weather.
b) any base layer garment used for skiing.
c) supplementary garments providing thermal insulation in the case of extreme cold - worn in addition to normal ski or cold weather clothing.

Examples:
a) thick socks
b) ski socks
c) silk inner sock liners (worn beneath ski socks)

Depends what your outers are. My jacket and pants are both shell only so layering is important. If I had insulated pants I'd not bother with leggings.

I had a girl friend once ( Laughing ) who was a bit of a 'back-packer' ; she came on holiday with two T-shirts, one Blouse and Eight pairs of knickers.
Her one piece ski suit was warm enough, so just wore a T-shirt during the day, while the other was in the wash ; and the Blouse for evenings... :: She didn't smell !!!!!!!!!!!!!
