Personally I run 2 sets so each gets 3 days (merino).
My wife will not get on board with this and insists she needs more for her and the kids, despite my insistence on the antimicrobial properties.
She is also a stickler for sell by dates on milk.....

@afterski, depends on your control of bodily waste functions and whether you’d have the facility to wash any during the week.
I’d trust her on the milk sell by dates.

I usually take 3. I have various weights of baselayers, but also match them with my midlayer. Always need a spare & baselayers are easy to stuff inside a boot or shoe or helmet, etc. or just stuffed anywhere where there is space... If I am taking my lightweight, then I often wear it travelling!

Good grief! You can wear merino for a minimum of a month before it will start to smell. The only issue is if it's spring or you've got too many layers on and sweat a lot, then you may get salt marks on it if it's a dark colour. It still won't smell though. Take a change of top if you're fussy but you certainly don't need a change of long johns.
The milk's turning when you pour it in your tea and there are some tiny white specks floating on the surface. Until then, the date's irrelevant. Having lived abroad for many years where milk was good for days past its sell by date, I find British milk usually goes off way before it's sell by date. Or maybe my fridge is just rubbish

I've got three bottoms and two tops that I rotate throughout the week. In the case of Easter skiing, I might not wear either and just wear my lined salopettes and a normal t-shirt with a light mid-layer.
Husband just takes one set as he rarely wears his, and the kids generally have three sets apiece. Big rarely wears them, Small generally does.
How many socks do most folk take?!
I drink my tea black and have soya milk on my cereal. Though recently I've noticed the soya milk (UHT) turning quickly. It's an unpleasant experience to have a solid dollop land on your weetabix at 7am. We have a new fridge.

The annual Snowheads base layer quantity thread.
I take a change of base layer for every day, and a fresh pair of socks for every day.
A mix of merino and synthetic base layers.
I don't really care if merino doesn't smell after a month.

Do the underwear test ….
Throw underwear at the wall.
If they sticks and stay where they are then it’s time to change them.
If they slide down the wall then they are good to go.
This also works for German underpants (the ones with the Bismark at the back).
Hope this helps

@holidayloverxx, +1 But quite often I only use two sets. I always alternate them ie never wear them on consecutive days and ensure they are not stuffed in a cupboard but properly aired between wears.

interesting responses...I actually don't even use a mid-layer anymore (I run hot), so just 2 layers of wool on top with my shell jacket, and a single wool layer pants.
so for a week - 2 sets of wool.
3 pairs of socks
Anything else is just taking up space
|
|
|
|
|

2 base layers for me, though bottoms is two different thicknesses and might wear one all week depending on temperature. Change top once in the week and adjust other layers for temp control.
New socks every day for holidays up to nine days skiing

 You know it makes sense.

I do this:
- new base layer t-shirt for each day, I use smart looking plan black thermal wicking t-shirts and change into the fresh one each evening after showering and use the next day.
- one pair of merino leggings, I hardly ever use these because I wear knee pads and shorts armour so I already have a thermal mid layer of sorts
- one long sleeved light merino top, I generally wear this over my body armour at the start of the day
- one long sleeved heavy merino top (this hardly ever gets used for skiing because it is only needed below -15) I tend to use one that is pretty smart and it gets used as top in the evenings instead
- two pairs of merino ski socks on loop and can be sink washed if needed
I'll sink wash anything that gets smelly as soon as I get back from skiing and towel ring it so it will be dry for the next day.
For my son I pack loads of basic non merino thermal long sleeve tops and leggings which he wears as lounge wear in the evenings. I also pack him 1 set of merino thermals for when it's cold but these are not usually needed because he likes to wear a puffer underneath his ski jacket.

Try bamboo based items, I've found I can get a full week out of a pair of socks if I wash them daily as I'm not a neanderthal.

It is more the miserly part of me that doesn't want to buy a load of new ones for the kids every couple of years, rather than any packing worries. If I'm bringing a ski bag and boots then it isn't a space or weight thing... I think I might treat myself to a 3rd set of socks this year though.
Although for business travel (10 days to 2 weeks) I am firmly one bag carry on only. Sink wash. If anyone frequents reddit then check out r/onebag.... https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/

Regardless of the duration (i.e. week or long weekend) I take 2 sets of "closest to the skin" layers, i.e. base layer, socks etc. They come in the shower with me after skiing and get a rinse through with shampoo / shower gel, a stamp / squeeze through the towel and hung up to dry for the next alternate day. This is basic hygiene and common sense.

If you wash them daily then I'd certainly expect you'd get a week out of them. You could take one pair of anything if you wash daily

Merino doesn't smell much but it wears out / loses shape very quickly.
The merino wool blends tend to be much longer lasting without losing too much of the "smelly less".
Some people stink more than others and with some of the manmade (non-wool) garments, you can taste the stench in the air.

2 sets of everything. Base layers do three days then switch, socks do two days then switch and wash the ones used for days one and two on the second evening to dry ready for day five.

Just be careful if the shower base is plastic rather than tiled.... I had an incident once where one of mine dissolved a hole in the plastic.
