Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Tignes or Val Thorens this coming weekend?

@MsFeelgood, I'm a skier and prefer Val and Tignes although I may be biased as having spent two seasons working in Val many, many moons ago in the mid 90's. However after Espace Killy, the 3V's is probably the ski area I've skied the most in, after good old Cairngorm in Scotland (well it used to be good!) before they took out some lifts and that dreadful train developed a problem.

OK, the highest point of Tignes, The Grande Motte, is above the highest point of Val Tho but there are 5 points in the VT lift system above 3000m whereas there's only the one in Tignes.

To be pedantic, and not to detract from your point wink there are 5 lifts that terminate above 3000m in Tignes: The GM Cable Car, The Funiculaire, Panoramique, Vanoise and Termignon. There was 6 but someone dismantled Leisse. Bar Stewards.

I know I can still see it but do you think they'll ever run Termignon again?

@yorkshirelad, And actually fit your tyre size!! I've been given the wrong size chains in Italy twice for the tyres on the hire cars and made sure they gave me the correct sized chains for the driving wheels/tyres on the vehicles before I left the car hire at the airport/s.

Forecast looking better and better for Sat/Sun!
My next question, in order to be on the piste at 9am on Saturday:
Where do I rent quality snowboards in Tignes Val Claret? Burton preferably because I will have my Burton boots with me. I don’t have much time to look around multiple stores.
Thanks in advance!

@PeakyB, I don’t think so. The Marie published ‘a future exploitation of the Grande Motte’ and it only had Vanoise and The Cable Car and one other but not Leisse. Termignon is likely to go in the next couple of years.

@chocksaway, thanks, that's a shame, used to love the run down to the Leisse chair. Some seasons rated black (easy one) some seasons red (quite steep, often chopped up towards bottom).
What a waste of a good bit of mountain at altitude rolling eyes

@PeakyB, @chocksaway, somewhere there was a comment about how much the glacier had receded and it prompted me to look at the webcam last week and far back as it would go, 2015 I think, and it was scary how narrow what would be the entrance Leisse would be now. I can’t seen viable piste anymore Sad

@MsFeelgood, looking good in Val Thorens

@stevew, It varied over the last 3 seasons. Post Covid it was virtually impossible to get to the chair without venturing off piste. The last 2 seasons it has been very good for decent skiers. But it was tricky to get a piste basher there so it became unlisted and therefore a few folk were caught out.
Time for a funny story wink
About 20 years ago it was a white out up there with virtually no one venturing up the GM. But there was little wind and it was OK skiing. Having seen no one we got to the bottom by skiing from pole to pole and the lifty was so surprised to see us he forgot to stash his ‘gentleman’s academic literature’.

@Handy Turnip, @Handy Turnip, and Val Thorens have announced a pretty significant chunk of the ski area open, with some awesome runs!

Has there been any announcement yet of what will be open in Tignes?

I saw a reply to somebody’s question on social media, stating that in addition to the glacier, they are working on Double M, Grattalu and Carline.
And for me personally, the fact that they are charging only 30€ for lift pass (per day) this weekend is a big thumbs up, when VT charges almost twice that much.

That's a great price. I guess whether it's better value comes to down to what's open. Val Thorens I'm guessing will have a large chunk of their ski area open. Tignes has been open since 16th I believe, so what's currently open? If it's just the glacier and a few other runs then that would explain the price.

Tignes has only been open for professionals so far, not the public. They only prepared 3 runs. As the 2 resorts are only 20 miles apart it will depend on what snow arrives which dictates what is open. We shall see on Saturday morning.

@MsFeelgood, Tignes and stay in Val Claret if you can, would be my first choice. I'd aim to wake up in Tignes rather than drive up in the morning so you can just chuck your gear on and walk over to the funicular. If the roads are really bad then there's sometimes a checkpoint where the local police will stop and make you put chains on. Only happened a couple of times in the season I did there, but be prepared just incase.

Certainly looks like it here:

https://en.tignes.net/skiing/ski-area/ski-map

Tignes has a certain feel to it pre-season, when only Grande Motte to Double M is open, which I really liked the time I went.

That's s fair point about lift pass prices. Val Thorens are charging €97,90 for the 2 days, which is a great deal but quite a bit higher.

@Origen, it is more the lifts, they are going to have to open the runs sometime, better to bash them at least them before the warm weather and wind comes but I guess that depends on staff availability mid November.

There is not a whole lot of snow…
Only Palafour is open from Le Lac, and Toviere side looks quite sad. A bit higher up (eg Merles) is decent at the moment, but the weather forecast for the next week does not show any snow.
Grande Motte Cable Car was under repair yesterday and still is today it seems, following storm damage of Thursday. I saw the roof of the start station was damaged, they were throwing down pieces from up there. Ride from Funi to Val Claret is ok, they made it very narrow though. Tichot was open and today possibly Grattalu also, snow is ok, but at the end of the day there are some rocks showing.
Hope this helps!
Can report more at the end of the day.

@MsFeelgood, What day at the weekend was better Saturday or Sunday? Is there pretty poor snow in general and the webcams make it look more snow (superficial cover) than there actually is. Not much snow forecasted for the next week! I hope you had a good couple of days for early season skiing in Tignes and it was worth your trip from the UK.

Saturday was better. Fresh tracks everywhere and colder so snow was better. But they opened a few additional lifts for Sunday so that allowed nice riding on fresh slopes also on Sunday.
I am guessing the storm of last Thursday moved the snow around so there are places with a lot of snow and then areas with the ground showing (e.g at the top of funi!)
Had a great 2 days but new snow is needed to make it fun for the next few weeks. And btw didn’t fly from the UK wink

@MsFeelgood, Glad to hear you had a great 2 days in Tignes. Where did you fly from if it wasn't the UK, nearby for sure perhaps Republic of Ireland or somewhere in mainland Europe? Yeah virtually no snow just below the top of the La Daille funi by the looks of things on the webcams. Snow cannons and piste bashers will hopefully soon sort that out.

I hope you felt good all weekend Toofy Grin Madeye-Smiley !!
