Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@SnoodyMcFlude, There's a very good ski tech shop at the base of Diable (cant remember the name it was years ago but the Scottish BAS instructor recommended it - could possibly be Venosc Sports) Had some super duper mega expensive and accurate (only two of its kind existed at the time) base grind and polish machine that transformed my then Rossi AM skis into racing machines . . .put a chevron pattern in the base that did something magical (tech nerds will know better than me) . . .

I had my skis serviced in that area in March and I went faster than I ever have done before. And my six pennyworth is I like L2A. Been ywice and the snow up top is always good and some great bars and restaurants too

Well I'm going to L2A over new year. I wanted Austria but was overruled on the basis that 'people' wanted to try a more 'party place' and in a new location. I tried steering towards St Anton but nooooooooo....

The one advantage might be that it's extraordinarily cheap compared with our usual Austria haunts, but the more I hear of it, the more I feel we are going to end up in snowy Benidorm.

It's just a shame that husbands (or men in general) don't get "I bloody well told you so" privileges, because I have a feeling we will be straight back to Austria next year!

We are also heading to L2A over New Year. Our third time in 5 years. We usually go at Easter and its been great. Two small children so usually download at the end of the day which is fine for us. The town is ok, we like how you can walk around the whole area and its all in one place. For a more old authentic town you can catch the gondola down to Venosc.

Quite a few! But for NY family holidays, it's been either Zell am See or Mayrhofen more often than not.

Actually, a quick question for those that know L2A well - I have a feeling that the breakfast at our hotel (Chamois Lodge) is going to be lacking in enough bacon, eggs and sausage for some people. Is there a good 'greasy spoon' type of place to get a full English?

Yes I know we are in France. But if it really is at all like what I'm kind of thinking, I'll just bet that such places exist Very Happy

I'm already expecting significant whining about lack of gulaschsuppe and kaiserschmarren. rolling eyes

@SnoodyMcFlude, I will be for my first trip this season too - however I always thought the perceived wisdom was to get them serviced after the first few days anyway as the factory service can be 'random / limited' . . . .?

@Belch, I'm going to wax them before I go, if they need work on the edges or a base grind then I'd seriously question the quality control at Armada Laughing

My job in L2A at the chalet hotel was nightwatchman so part of it was bringing in the fresh croissants and pain au chocolat at 5am still warm direct from the bakery. I ate better breakfast than anyone else working for ski world.

These 2 resorts are pretty much the opposite

La Clusaz :

Much lower in altitude (1000 to 2700m at Balme), very good snow conditions with regard to the altitude
Nice Typical "Savoyard" style village
Higher sandard of living,
Older people and pretty quiet at night.

Les 2 Alpes :

Higher in altitude : 1600 to 3600 at the glacier, better snow conditions
Younger population
Not a charming resort
Good night life

Ha, yes, not quite sure how the OP settled on those two...

It was his first ski holiday, so didn't have much of a clue...ended up booking Zermatt which is even more bizarre for a beginner! Shocked

Skiing wise, I couldn't think of anything worse than being a beginner in L2A in the New Year holidays. If I wanted to put someone off skiing for life then this would be the time and the place.

It will be carnage. Good luck.

Hope this doesn't come across as negative wink
