Hi fellas
My wife would definitely benefit from some ski lessons whilst we're in Sainte Foy,
She would prefer an instructor who can speak Mandarin since she struggles with some of the termanology used by English-speaking instructors
Does anyone know of any instructors in the tarentaise area who offer lessons in Mandarin chinese?
Cheers

Try (bigger) Val d'Isere, up the hill.
Much deeper pool of instructors.
Or install a realtime voice-translator app, such as IVT, and take private 1-2-1 lessons with an English-speaking instructor.
Translator apps are now as good as a real human.

It's looking like its going to be difficult to find
Val d'Isere isn't a bad shout, however we won't be driving or have access to a car so it might be difficult to reach
We'll probably end up just booking an English instructor
She's perfectly fluent its mainly just some jargon and termanology she struggles with

@ahhbisto, welcome to SH's,
These guys say they have Chinese speaking instructors: https://www.supremeski.com/
Is this been a problem in lessons before - your post suggests that but just wanted to confirm as it surprises me.

Looks to me that Supreme are now a subsidiary of MaisonSport who are an aggregator/booking system for independent instructors. A bit like Uber for ski instruction.
"We may be able to help" I suspect means "we might have a mate somewhere who speaks some chinese".
@ahhbisto, sounds like the problem is the "fit" with the instructor (as it were). A good teacher ought to be able to get round minor linguistic issues?

 And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Maybe for the next trip -Wengen. Supreme Ski has ‘chinese’ speaking instructors although which Chinese language isn't clear.

Try MaisonSport direct then or SkiBro. SkiBro have a language filter (nothing in Mandarin for Xmas week in VdI though)

Not much use for Ste Foy but for reference Courchevel village ESF has a native Chinese lady, full French qualified: Liu Yang

Find a good teacher. Not someone who can do the SkiTest in X seconds but someone who can communicate ideas effectively using few or simple words (wondering specifically about instructors for young children or deaf), and effectively means she fully understands. Explain the need to avoid jargon to the school.
I’m guessing the problem is 50% in her head.
Other thing, does she admit when she doesn’t understand? Many don’t (politeness, embarrassment). My skydiving instructor said his worst experience was when a German nodded enthusiastically through his training, then totally screwed up in the air; he hadn’t admitted that he didn’t understand, with potentially fatal consequences.

Maison sport and Supreme are both owned by the same people. I know someone that works for the family in a year round position, who also runs one of the supreme ski schools.

@swskier, and your point is?
I note that Supreme suggest they have a "school" in Chamonix? I realise it's a new addition but I've not heard or seen anything of them?

@swskier, ah, I looked at the MS site and it's quite clear. To be fair, the 3 Brit owners look totally legit and dead keen on a good customer experience.

The guy I know that works with them shared a flat in London with them many moons back, which is how he's involved in it. Certainly the person I know is probably one of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet, plus a fully trained instructor and also a trainer and examiner. I like the Maison Sport model, it's something i'm hoping/planning to use in the future.

@swskier, lots of instructors dropping them due to fee model and lack of bookings, apparently

That!

That too.
For levels beyond beginner, it’s often necessary to “communicate” some technical aspect of skiing (“edge”, balance, and various body parts). A good instructor should be able to explain those concepts without using jargons.
I’m assuming a private lesson is a given.

Thanks for the replies guys
I've emailed multiple companies to no avail
I think we'll end up booking the lessons with ESF with an English speaking instructor
She'll be fine it is mostly just in her head
