Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

April trip - less obvious ideas?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
For logistical reasons we ideally want to ski from approx 8-15th April. We could get an apartment Sat-Sat and tag on a couple of days in a hotel if necessary, but 8-15 are the ideal dates.

Group is two families; one family is adults and teens and can ski anywhere but the other is a mum, a 9 year old and a 5 year old so we need ski school and a suitable set up for his second week on snow.

One family will be driving from the UK, the other flying.

Can anyone help with suggestions of slightly less obvious places for that time of year, where it might be easier to find accommodation for non-Sat to Sat, but still drivable from the UK? Accommodation is lean in the obvious places like Tignes, La Plagne and Val Thorens.

Thanks all!

You should find Tues-Tues in Avoriaz, whether pierreetvacances.com, maeva.com, booking.com, or airbnb.com, etc.

@swoafs,
Going Tuesday - Tuesday will make it difficult for group ski lessons.
Try asking tignes.co.uk and tignes-spirit.com Know they have Wed-Wed apartments, so may be able to help Tue-Tue.

This is true - we went to Avoriaz last year Wed-wed on similar dates to those mentioned - I think we ended up doing a private lesson on the Wed -Fri and then got them in group lessons Sat-Tuesday. If you look at skibro.com it lists all of the ski schools and private lesson providers.

Another options to consider would be Les Menuires which is just down the valley from Val Thorens (same local pass or you can opt for full 3 valleys) - season ends earlier (21 April) as its not quite as high as Val Thorens but easy to get up to VT if the snow isnt so good in LM. We stayed in the Les Bruyeres part of the resort which is probably most convenient for getting up to VT.

Generally when looking for accom on non standard days I find Booking.com and Vrbo.com often have plenty of options.

Swiss peak Zinal

https://www.swisspeakresorts.com/fr/zinal/hiver/zinal-en-hiver-791

Zinal, along with Grimentz is very snow sure with some great pistes although small. Add in St Luc/Chandolin and Vercorin though and that's a weeks worth of terrain. Maybe awkward if you have two families but only 1 car although there are buses

The accommodation that I linked doesn't have a Sat-Sat requirement

I would contact rental agencies direct in places like La Plagne, Les Menuires, etc. I would imagine at that time of year they would accommodate a Tue to Tue booking.

As mentioned may need privates for ski lessons.

You all make a good point about the lessons; it's not my family which includes the 5 year old and 9 year old and I hadn't thought about this.... food for thought, thank you....

@swoafs, airbnb? We rarely get bookings in April. Can’t believe you won’t find some decent options for a week long booking

@BobinCH, I wondered (with myself in mind!!) about Verbier. What are the options for a 5 year old in terms of skiing? Are there any easy areas? Might be a case of ski school in the morning and swimming pool in the pm, so I'd be interested to hear if there are public pool facilities etc.

If he’s a complete beginner there’s the les Esserts area with magic carpet and poma lift but not sure it’s still open mid-April. 2nd option is the La Chaux area that is accessed via an up and over gondola from Les Ruinettes. The blues off the La Chaux 2 are perfect for beginners. Unfortunately the new sports centre isn’t ready yet so there’s only the Mondzeu pool which isn’t that inspiring!

 You know it makes sense.

I had a brilliant trip to Ischgl in late April 2023. We drove from the UK with a stop over in Calais arrived in time for supper the next day. Suitability would depend on which family is driving. It might be ok for the adults and teens but I would think a 5 year old would find the drive too much.

Also take a look at Saas Fee with a slightly shorter journey. Accommodation wise the Hostel 4000 ( https://www.youthhostel.ch/en/hostels/wellnesshostel4000-saas-fee ) has availability from 9 April to 15 April starting at at £2350 for all 7 of you. You could do a night in Visp on the 8th and then drop bags off and still ski on the 9th before checking in.

On the lessons point does the budget stretch to private lessons?
