Indeed- hopefully if it "snows on top of the rain" and doesn't rain too much looking like not going to warm up too dramatically in the next couple of weeks either so should hopefully still ok for 7th April, fingers crossed!

Phew- looks like there has been a decent dump at last- one would hope with a few top up flurries in the next few days should last till the 7th-14th April!

40-50cm in most places. It was quite heavy, dense snow rather than powder but that’s no problem once it all gets bashed for staying around for a while.

Snowing outside my window right now. Big heavy wet flakes, but I’m 400m below any skiing and 700m below most of it.

Actually, on the big, heavy wet flakes front and the snow being dense. The avalanche warning was quite high. Some skiers needed rescuing from an avalanche on Montmalus (mountain, not piste). Also yesterday afternoon, I went past 5 places where there'd been slides not too far away but seemingly a safe distance from open pistes. It was difficult to tell whether they'd happened naturally or from skiers taking a risk. Anyway, be careful out there.

Seems to be cooling a little over the next few days- possibly another 10 cm next Saturday- remaining promising for avoiding early season closure!

Having got back a week or so ago I'm gutted to see that it seems to be consistently snowing almost on a daily basis in Andorra. The webcam footage looks great and the trees white with snow. Enjoy!

@Mrmeaner, Yes, it’s snowing most days at the moment, if only for an hour or so heavy shower. I was ready to run home from work tonight but it was absolutely hammering down with rain. Just a couple of hundred metres above us though everything was very white again. It should be a great last month of the season.

Yep def looking promising for when I come out in three weeks and a half! Still continual mild to moderate snow falling right up till Monday and beyond on Snow forecast.com with freezing levels down to 1000m! It’s like a second winter!

Yep. Still snowing. I was at Pal today and it snowed lightly most of the day and got heavy as we were leaving. It’s now snowing outside mine so it’ll be much heavier up higher.
The ski areas are reporting a base of 1m 70. 70cm deeper than Saturday.

Was at Les 3 Domaines in southern France today. Excellent snow that the top and mid-levels quite reasonable down low with a bit of scaping on ice patches. Had a decent snow fall last night. Looking at the off-piste, it is not excellent. It has nice powder on it but frequently when someone turns on it, shrubbery or rock is exposed. Other areas do appear good off piste. It was cold enough for the powder to stay at mid-level and above.

What's the feeling locally about the storm on its way on Wed/Thursday? although potentially 20 cm snow+ to upper slopes looks like 40 mm rain+ to lower slopes...hope they can somehow survive and the Grandvalira stays open till the closing date!

I have no idea what the feeling is about the upcoming storm you mention. I am just a visitor here on my first day. Perhaps if the lower slopes are in poor condition, people just ski the upper slopes and ride the gondolas down.
I skied part of Grandvilara today. Lots of snow and no rocks showing on piste all the way to the bottom. A few scrapes on some of the lower runs to the base but mostly good snow. Partly sunny in the morning with some wind, heavy snow in the late afternoon but easing off now. There is accumulation in town. Supposed to be partly sunny tomorrow, cloudy on Tuesday and then precipitation.

Thanks it looks it’s going be more like Thurs/Fri now but if you are still there would be great for a bit of a heads up. One would hope they could keep things going till 7th-14th April given the reasonable base currently. Have just checked in for my flights and will book transfers but slightly wavering about getting the ski pass in advance!

Skied Pas and Grau today. Managed a few runs that haven’t been skiable this season or last to my memory.
There’s been 6-7cm of snow this evening where I am and I’m pretty low. I’d imagine it’s been 10cm+ up on the slopes.
@Dr. Will, The storm at the end of the week… local forecasts are reporting snow above 2,000m, rain below. Most of the skiing in Andorra is above 2,000m so it shouldn’t be a massive problem. The lower skiing being the home runs down to Soldeu, El Tarter and the one piste down to Arinsal. Yes, technically some other parts are a touch below 2,000m but they’re close enough for it not to be a worry. Regardless, there’s plenty of snow around at the moment to village level. It’s not all going to get washed away.

Clear blue skies this morning at Grandvilara, fresh snowfall down to the villages and temps cold enough that it should be great powder for the entire area. If the winds have died down and it stays sunny, it could be the best ski day of the year, depending on how you define that.

Thanks hammerite- yep levels in Soldeu creeping up to 130-190cm and very near full opening across entire area- I guess it will take a fair amount of rain to wash away what is there! If the black gets leading back to my hotel (Avet I think, we will be staying at the Piolets Center in Soldeu) get trashed so be it- can always take the blue or download instead.

Great ski day at Grandvalira. Clear in the morning, some cloud in early afternoon that the mostly disappeared. I was surprised to have at least 5cm of fluffy snow on the car in town. Lots of powder at the ski area. Good snow to the bottom of all runs. A few scrapes in lower levels. But, there are some bare patches to be seen(not on runs) as it appears that the snow depth can be shallow at points. I am not sure abut that 130cm thing. Maybe in certain areas. Maybe the wind has an effect on final accumulation areas. Once a dark spot become visible, it gets bigger quickly in the sun. I was surprised how much snow disappeared on the road in the valley to town at the end of the day. Lots of somewhat cool, dry cloudy days would be best for good April skiing to happen(or some more snowstorms).

Great to know. Although there looks to be a few days of rain at lower altitude mid week, seems that significant snowfall could be predicted yet again at all levels on Sunday, fingers crossed! The Andorran extended winter continues!

@Dr. Will, the rain/snow level for the next day or two keeps wobbling up and down either side of 2,000m depending on your source of forecast. The local forecast was favourable for a lower snow line earlier this week but it now seems to have gone up.
On the plus side, early next week looks cold and snowy so any rain damage should get rectified quickly. I might have a bit of a wet ski Saturday in claggy cloud this weekend though!

It's a warm one today with the arrival of a southern wind and Saharan dust. By about 12:00, the snow was quite sticky and grabbing the skis. It was very quiet though (Pal/Arinsal).

Bit of a random question (not necessarily related to snow as such) but for those who have recently skied in Grandvalira do you know if there is any publically accessible fun/parallel slalom course in the area? Need to film my son skiing for GCSE PE but unsure if the only way would be to book him onto a competition based lesson plan. It def doesn't need to be fancy, just a few turns and preferably a timing option.

@Dr. Will, there's a slalom course just below the Espiolets area of Soldeu.
The rain was extremely heavy where I am (about 10km from Pal and 20km from Soldeu, and at 1,300m) for a couple of hours this morning. It's now snowing here and has been for about 30 mins. Looks to be absolutely dumping it down up high. The snow is pretty wet at the moment down here but as it gets colder it will hopefully become a bit more powdery.
|
|
|

Thanks for that. Looks like according to the webcams the slopes have pretty much survived at least depth wise the rain and it looks like the weather's clearing just over a week before I arrive! Def looking forward to the skiing!

@Dr. Will, I went out yesterday a bit later on. It was still chucking it down with rain where I live but up high it was just thick craggy cloud. It cleared around 12:00 and we had an amazing afternoon skiing a few cm of powder. Down lower the pistes were chalky (probably from rain) but still fine. There were a couple of puddles but I think these were where streams run under the snow.
It’s currently snowing down to at least 1,300m. The rest of this week is forecast to be cold with a bit of snow. It should be pretty much perfect for you.

How much offpiste is easily available? Am out for a week with wife and kids. All experienced with off piste skiing but obv. don’t know terrain. Sounds like off piste may be quite heavy not to mention avalanche risk. I’m just wondering if we can easily get to some skiing from lifts/ alongside piste or is it worth a guide.
