Watched the Austrian Tv guy go down the Lauberhorn DH course doing his camera run. It looked hairy enough and he was 26 seconds slower than the winner. The only gauge to see how fast they are going is the tracking drone (annoying as the noise is) until FIS put cameras on the racers. |
I thought the same, may’ve been Bormio or Beaver Creek, frightening DH speeds. 90 mph on the fastest bits, 60mph slowed down for a tight turn. On rock hard ice.
The brilliant Daron Rahlves was asked circa 10 years ago on tv “How does it affect your skiing when others have a bad fall?” He answered they learn to not let it enter their thinking, ever. The moment you let it, you’re effectively finished as a potential winner, as you lose x percent.

A rare NZ victory in the W’s Giant-Slalom today. Most of leaders seem to come a cropper at the same gate.
(Not as rare as a UK win though).

It looks extra difficult this year, skiers being bumped about all over the place. Thought it would play into the power of Paris.
Nice to see some people taking it to the Swiss.
SpoilerWow, Crawford with the late start, he'll of a run to be able to make that mistake near the end of the run but still take the lead

I've just seen that UK Eurosport is being closed from 28th Feb. Cycling coverage will move to TNT, but does anybody know where or if ski coverage is going in the UK?

I think (hope) it is just the branding that is going
"..It means that live cycling, tennis, snooker and the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 will join the Premier League, UEFA European club football, Premiership Rugby, MotoGP, UFC and boxing from the end of next month on TNT Sports..."

I've not seen an email, but have seen on facebook it being discussed. You'll need to upgrade to the full TNT package to continue watching Eurosport. I'll have to sign up to an austrian account with Discovery+ now instead, or watch on ORF on.
I need the on demand versions, as i'm always skiing when the races are on.

@albob, nope, not just the branding. It moves everything to needing the 31 quid monthly sub. I'm hoping it's still included in my broadband package, otherwise I'm out

I think it's just the name that's being dropped in the UK. You'll get all the ski coverage (and loads of other sports and general programmes) on Discovery+. You can either subscribe to Discovery+ or if you have btinternet like me it's included in my package.

If you have the Discovery+ app (which I get with my btinternet package) then at the bottom of the page you click on the sports icon and then on the next page at the top you can select all sports and then Alpine Skiing.

Yes I know that, that's what we do...but how do you know that will still be available when eurosport closes? It seems to be linked to eurosport as it is eurosport coverage without the ads

I had this email

Thank you for being a discovery+ subscriber.
On 28 February 2025, the Eurosport and TNT Sports brands will be brought together, with all sports content available in one single destination via TNT Sports. This in turn means the discovery+ Standard plan & Eurosport linear channels are closing.
On your next renewal date on or after today, the price of your plan will decrease to the price of the Basic plan at £3.99/month. From 28 February, Sports content, including Eurosport 1 & 2, will no longer be included in your plan. From your next renewal on or after 28 February, you will continue to renew on the Basic plan unless you cancel in your account before that renewal.
To continue to access sports content, you can either upgrade your plan to the Premium (incl. TNT Sports) plan before 28 February 2025, or resubscribe to Premium after this date. If you are a direct customer you can upgrade via your account settings. If you are an app store customer you can upgrade via the app store unless you subscribe via Fire TV or Google. If you subscribe via Fire TV or Google, you will need to wait for your subscription to end before you can subscribe to the Premium plan. |
What it doesn’t tell me is that the Premium Plan is £30.99 per month
That’s not an amount I’m prepared to pay just to watch ski racing.

Yes, £31 to watch skiing per month is very steep and I'm not prepared to do it. Can someone outline what the options are for those of us who are not very tech-savvy and really don't want to miss the skiing? Clearly there is very little coverage on the BBC here in the UK and the FIS app shows just a minute or two of the highlights. I'm stuck!

@holidayloverxx, Don't know, it is still there this winter even though other bits of the system had been rebranded as Discovery.
Ski races are often on Das Erste or ZDF as well which are also free to watch.

Yes. Das Erste and ZDF have live coverage at the weekends, quite comprehensive for men's and women's events. Though neither are doing Schladming. As @rjs, says, Astra sat for the German TV including Eurosport.de but not Eurosport 2.

Austra Orf live is good. I only noticed this last slalom that they tap into the team radios to hear whats being relayed and, oddly, translate it into English, sometimes less than successfully though.

I believe it was a new feature as at the Kitzbühel slalom. They're doing it again now at the Schladming GS.
I'll be using ORF On going forward, they have a live option, and on demand option as well.

They do indeed, very useful plus they show x-c and biathlon. They are really into winter sports. Who needs Eurosport.
PS And the mad jumping.

@swskier, how does one get ORF in the UK. Again, I have no clue on tech things including setting up dishes but I read somewhere that VPN can be used? Whatever that is!

@f4monty, get a VPN, use an Austria server then google Austria ORF live, you’ll get the web player.
NordVPN works

@holidayloverxx, you don’t alway need to have it on, just when needed. But some seem better for certain things, try with free trial then pick the one that works best for what you want.
