Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Season Ski Hire

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Afternoon!

Son has got a job in La Croisette in Les Menuires for the season going out in December

Just trying to figure out what to go about kit for him. He's a skier and boarder. Just looking for any advice as to how much it's likely to cost him to hire a board / skis for the season (he has his own boots). A quick online search is bringing back prices of c2000E for the season

We have the option of buying him some skis but then he'll have to pay to get them there and if he wants to Snowboard I guess he'll have to hire and pay as he goes.

Just wondering whether he should wait and sort it out when he gets into to resort or try and sort now

Any advice greatly received

Thanks

Jon

Why not buy them in France?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yep, though about that, maybe using Freeglisse for some second hand kit and having them delivered in resort but not sure if we can do that and delay delivery until he gets there. Not sure he can afford brand new.....

@jonathancarty, have him buy when he gets there. Or a wander around hire shops for a seasonal deal. Or some hire shops sell off their fleets .... But buying in UK or in advance sounds daft to me.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

There should be some of last seasons stock around so I'd buy new, old season. EkoSport have some at 40+% off plus another 15% off at checkout, just thinking I might add another pair....

Or go to the recommended hire shop and try some on a hire to buy proposal - try them for a day or two and if you buy them you get the hire fee taken off the price, so you can get skis which have had 6-8 weeks of use for under €300, and you know you like them before parting with the cash

@jonathancarty, what position will he be carrying out in Les Menuires?

whoever he will be working for may have some form of contact with a ski hire shop, if it is a tour op they will definitely have a tie in with some shops, and he may even get free equipment for the season. even if it is not a tour op, if they are a well established company (even a bar), they may know other workers who can help.

has he spoken to his upcoming employer yet?

i worked a few seasons in the 3v's nearly 30 years ago, and i bought myself a brand new set of salomon skis for around £400 to take with me the first season, as i was not told that we were supplied skis and boots for the season Embarassed Embarassed

they sat in our chalet boot room in their plastic wrapping for nearly 2 seasons with a for sale sign on, never did get to sell them, and started using them towards the end of my second season

we got to change our skis on a regular basis with the hire shop, as we were given "rockhoppers" at the start of each season, until we got several major dumps of snow

Just a couple of years ago, when my eldest did his 1st season teaching, on his first morning he wandered into a local hire shop ( under an international ski hire network ) and negotiated a season hire on some mid-range Atomic piste skis ( ideal for teaching ) for a whole €250 Shocked
Come April when he went to return said skis, the shop owner, who by now knew my son well as he had been in many times over the season, both for his own needs and indeed bringing customers with him, just said he could keep them Eh oh!
I would advise waiting until your son gets out there to see what happens on the ground Eh oh!

I agree with @Timberwolf sort something in resort

Also worth looking at any saisonnaire FB or other char groups for Les Menuires.

Finally, https://www.skidoccasion.com/fr/ are worth a look. A decent pair of ex test skis (prob 1 weeks use) can be a good investment.

+1 to buy in resort

Message his employer and get him hooked up to a ski shop for inexpensive skis/board to start with. Save some money for bigger purchases until he's a month in and really knows what will suit him.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Thanks all, great advice as usual snowHead

He's been in touch with his employer and they have a good deal on season hire. Not sure what he'll get kit wise but cheap enough to have him sorted until he finds his way locally.

Thanks again all Very Happy
