@under a new name, it’s been a great day. Got the wife down a red today (admittedly a tame one but she’s got an aversion to anything more than a blue) as it was in perfect condition. Snow was still really nice at 3pm when we finished.

Les Houches was in great nick today, 10-20cm of fresh side piste, more if in a windblown pocket. Bluebird and great to be back in the valley

Went to Brevent, got tracked very quickly indeed and the wife fell off the lift on an offload ramp which somewhat put a dampener on the day. Still had fun lapping around until the light went flat about 2.30pm. Hopefully heading to MBC for a burger next.

@8611, +1 thanks for sharing.
Never spoken to him but admired his skiing and piano playing equally over the years.

Lovely piece, very thoughtfully written |
Couldn’t agree more.
On our infrequent visits he was always up earlier and remained there much later. Always happy to update on how things were going, and appeared indestructible….

Quick request - how is Brevent/Flegere in the afternoon this week? I assume the South face means soup by mid-day - and no way to ski back down? I know the piste is closed but in North facing GM we traditionally ski to the car park on Pierre a Ric to close the season in April.
We hike in Aiguille Rouge but have never skied there (and I wouldn't dare ski touring Col des Montets, the Argentieres ladders and Lac Blanc...)

@patrick!, I would comfortably assume that, yes. We haven't been up as can't be bothered with the crowds.
No chance at all to ski down. Was mostly bare lower down 4 weeks ago.

Thanks. I want the view, but maybe we'll simply go to GM. Sunny weekend ahead!

So in the end we went to Brevent and Flegere. Wow, stunning views, we still have stars in our eyes.
On the negative side I'd list the crowds, and a few slow lifts - a bit of a shame for such a resort.
Still, the kids had a blast.

Just woken up to at least 20cm of fresh in Argentiere village. Could be an awesome day on the mountain assuming it all opens. Winter has returned!

@Peter S, it’s in surprisingly good shape, particularly with last nights top up.
Up high on GM was immensely good today. Got the third gondola up and fresh tracks for three laps of bochard/triangle/lavancher. Definitely the best day I’ve had this season, aided by my new QST98 skis.

Really nice conditions up at Le Tour today. The Tete de Balme chairlift was closed but everything else was open and skiable. Quiet on the slopes. Forecast for the rest of the week is more sunshine and light winds. Happy with that

Bit cloudy today but great skiing conditions on Brevant/Flegere. Finally skied the valley off the top of the Florian button lift. Really good and forgiving sugary spring snow. Hardly anyone around after 3pm and everything open. Only saw one other Telemarker today. I waved

@Peter S, yes, the RdP is pretty impressive isn't is? But the renovations were €€€€
Brev-Fleg yesterday mighty nice. Spring, but nice.

I was also in brev-fleg yesterday. Pistes already slushy by noon, off piste awful. I quite like a bit of slush so somewhat enjoyable, but it's hardly "great conditions" right now in Chamonix like some of you guys are making out. Went up Mont Buet today and snow there also awful, track out bare in many places, had to hike out. I've got another 5 days here but am already looking at trail running options because lift pass is simply not worth the current conditions. Even the touring areas are pretty poor right now. Let's see if the snow comes this weekend, it will take a bit to help and probably won't last long even if it comes as simply too hot and sunny.

@boarder2020, Maybe go higher. It would be unusual not to be able to find some good lines in the Argentiere basin or off the midi, particularly if you're prepared to climb a bit.
I was there in early March when there had been no significant fresh snow for 4 weeks. We found fresh tracks every day, but you have to be prepared to do something outside the standard touring routes. e.g. back of Cornu all the standard routes were skied, but going up to the Lacs Noir there were long unskied north-facing lines through the couloirs.

I've pretty much only been touring and have done multiple lines off midi. Conditions are simply not that good. Many locals say the same and are putting away the skis already for this season. The temps have simply been too high combined with not much snow falling lately.
We found fresh snow off breche Puiseaux a few days ago (I guess it's not so popular due to the climb and rap). Top bit was quite nice for a few turns, but quickly got crusty and then slushy lower down.
I'm not complaining, I didn't come to chamonix expecting to ride powder. The conditions are kind of what I expected. I just think some people in this thread are massively overstating. I spent the last 2 months riding mostly untracked powder so maybe my threshold for "good" is too high. But really slushy pistes by noon can never be "mighty nice".

@boarder2020, uhhhh, we thought it was “mighty nice”’.
It’s, y’know, an, “opinion”…
And depends how fussy you are.
Also understand if you’re paying marginally for a lift pass.

@under a new name, make your mind up, if it's "mighty nice" paying for a lift pass should be a no brainer
I get that it's completely subjective. I also accept my standards may be a little higher than yours. But its not just me, the overwhelming thing I've heard from others is how bad conditions are. In fact a bunch of people where I'm staying left to go across the border to Italy for that reason. It's clear all the snow has been falling on that side and conditions are way better (although they said even high temperatures there mean good turns at the top quickly turn to heavy slush a bit lower). But what do you expect when there's been no real new snowfall and temperatures at mid mountain are high and the sun's blasting everything.
I'd much rather ski, the lift pass price is fairly inconsequential and I'm already here. The fact I'm considering hiking trail running is a testament to just how bad things are. That trail running/hiking is even an option shows the lack of snow and high temps.
I've actually had a good time here. Theres a lot of fun to be had despite conditions. But we don't need to pretend the snow is good, you must feel the slush and see the bare patches around.

@boarder2020, well my mate skied Les Tours du Buet --> Vallons de Tre Les Eaux and Couloir du Pissoir into Trient this past week, all in excellent condition judging by the photos he keeps pinging me - think you just need to know where to go etc

As I said I've had a good time. I was mainly here for some ski mountaineering stuff and some touring so the downhill was not the main goal.
I just don't see how at flegere and brevant slushy pistes already at 11am and terrible off piste with lots of grass and rock patches can be considered "good" conditions. I have friends who wanted to visit who I've told to go across the border in Italy instead where they got more snow. I certainly wouldn't recommend Chamonix for anyone looking for resort skiing right now.
Perhaps you really do think current conditions are good. I am fortunate to ride powder most days, so maybe my standards are just different. I guess I know to take people's conditions reports with a big pinch of salt in future!
Looks like only a few cm of snow up high and rain up to around 2000m forecast now. Enjoy those conditions in brevant next week. Look out for me I'll be in trail runners on the vk
