Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Guess those tourists don't know what they are doing either Laughing

If you want to say conditions in the resort are "ok" for spring I wouldn't be too critical. But suggesting it's "good" right now is definitely a huge overreach. Unless you are just a "tourist" who doesn't know good snow NehNeh

@8611, as I said I've had a good time here. I have got some good turns and conditions were fine for what I've wanted to do until now. I already have accommodation and flights booked so will stay and make the most of my time here, there is lots to do other than skiing. I'm fortunate to have got 60 odd days skiing this year already, which is enough for me.

@Weathercam, well you follow me on Strava and have seen at least a few photos of my trails. I suspect you even gave kudos to some of those posts Laughing

@boarder2020, you've literally written in your post that "skiing is like pizza - even when it's bad, it's still pretty damn good!" So why are you stopping skiing this week when it would still be "pretty damn good"?

By the way, I disagree re. pizza, but I respect that people have different opinions about subjective topics. I'm not going to insist that you're wrong or that I'm used to better pizza than you as a result.

Yes, but never one photo of you leaving a smoking trail of powder in the air behind you is what I meant, not tracks in the snow.....

There's shedloads of stuff going on at altitude above 3,500m and to diss it is incredibly naive of you.

Ironically just been nagging to my mate for the past half hour and told him what you said, and he wasn't too polite in his response Laughing

Clearly. You seem to have a much narrower definition of "good" than I do. Back in the commuting days, pretty much almost any day on snow, was good!!

It's the end of March. B-F is absolutely south facing. What do you expect? Puzzled Me I love slushy bumps. And spring snow. It's just a question of getting the timing right.

Any fule knos this.

@denfinella, I'm definitely not Colin Haley or skiing with the likes of Christina lutsi Laughing My point is if those guys can't find good snow at 3800m what do you really expect those of us that don't have that level of skill and local knowledge are finding lower down. I was assuming this thread is to discuss general conditions in Chamonix and most snowheads are probably sticking to the resorts.

As I already said conditions are pretty much what I expected to find. It's not me making out they are "great". If you said conditions are what you'd expect when temperatures above 3c at 2000m and there's some fun slush to be had I'd say fair enough. But it's not "good" in the grand scheme of things, I'm sure plenty of visitors (many of which may not like slush) are somewhat disappointed.

@Weathercam, well I mostly tour solo and don't really care to film myself so of course not so many videos. I'm not sure how my snowboard level is really relevant to conditions anyway. Maybe your mate can give Colin Haley and Christina lutsi some tips too Laughing

As said above we had good turns around 3300m the other day. The problem is it gets a lot worse very quickly lower down. If you want to give me some lines that are in great condition above 3500m I'm more than happy to go try them out! My suspicion is some good turns at the top followed by a pretty miserable rest of the way down. But I'm willing to be proven wrong.

Le Tour had a light dusting this morning but was pretty grim underneath with freeze/thaw cycle pistes. Sharp edges a must. Oof.

The forecast this week looks amazing. Much cheaper spring prices too. Anyone who enjoys spring skiing will have a great time in the sun. Yes Brevant/ Flegere is soft but there is plenty of snow and most of the off piste between the runs are skiable.
Perhaps the place to post about ski mountaineering is the off piste thread ?

Unfortunately I’m back home now Laughing

All lifts and Pierre a Ric still open. The good weather looks to last until Saturday.
It’s unusual for the French Alps and northern England to share the same weather, courtesy of the huge Anticyclone just east of the UK.
No doubt the snow will return later in April or May Laughing

Skied Argentiere over the weekend - pistes holding up.pretty well for the conditions, even Pierre a Ric! Touring over to the Rognons glacier was interesting to start off with, refrozen, half tracked sastrugi at the top but turned to lovely chalky snow about halfway down. Off piste on the front side is likewise going through a lot of freeze thaw but really enjoyable by mid afternoon.

Ugh! Is that Hearse? The pistes looked quiet on the webcam. This is the problem with Cham imo, when it does snow there is too much competition.

@8611, That's Herse. Bochard closed due avvy risk.

one has to wonder why they thought it sensible to close Flegere and Balme the weekend before Easter Puzzled

Ah, the Bochard throng is squashed into it too, and the rest of the valley functionally. GM would always be the magnet on powder day. Yes Easter is funny, its a pity they can't be flexible depending on conditions, but I presume they need to manage staffing etc, restaurants in the other areas need to know when they won't be trading. Only obsessives like us are still thinking of skiing this late.

Plenty of obsessives still around and as usual peak snow depth at altitude is only just being reached in late April/early May.

Herse was busy from 10ish onwards. I took an early lunch and by 1 the queue had gone and never returned. Was hard work today, possibly the hardest snow I've skiied in, very heavy with a touch of crust. Got better as the day wore on, but the run down the closed Pierre a Ric finished me.

I skied plaine Joux this morning, yesterday late afternoon it would have been an acceptable ski, this morning...if I'm being nice it was shite....transforming mush over crust on hor frost and air.....on rando race skis it required some very base techniques.

Yup, crustathon. Which was most unexpected. Crusty layer about 4 inches under the top, with a lot of fresh snow underneath. Odd.

Anyway, as we are off elsewhere tomorrow I don’t mind pointing out that the snow in the forest wasn’t crusty after getting into the trees. A bit heavy but much better than elsewhere. As most people seem to be a bit lazy we had the whole place to just 2 of us, so there are lots of fresh tracks to still be had. Of course the part that can be skied with a right turn to the lift was tracked out.

Take your skins and go straight down from the highest point.

Classic upside down touring

Great closing party in LGM yesterday - the usual waterslide fun, zip line, and Brochard sandwiches, with a welcoming complimentary (continental) breakfast to boot up.

The snow held (for early May) despite the scorching heat of the last few weeks.

Alpine skis are now stored away!
