Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Wow! Looks amazing and only Oct/Nov.

We are there in December. Cannot wait.

How ahead of time to book train tickets? Now or closer to the time? (Munich to Kaltenbach)

In October I was diverted to Frankfurt from Munich. I'd booked return tickets Munchen Flughafen to Mayrhofen back in July, cost just shy 60 quid return.

Obviously missed train so when I was flown back to Munich had to get ticket on the fly so to speak, cost 54 quid one way.

You pays your money you takes your chance as the saying goes.

I had the misfortune of leading the work physical stock count yesterday which meant no skiing for me as I was in the office at 05:45, and it was gone 14:00 by the time I left Jenbach! We did actually head up to the Insider ski shop in Hintertux yesterday and for a dog walk

We did get to ski today though. We didn't rush up and it was pretty much 11:00 by the time we were at the very top for our first run. Beautiful weather, it's got a bit colder the last few days, particularly at night, and we've had a frost down in the valley most mornings.

They had opened the 2nd Kaserer t bar and blue 12 and 13 runs right the way down. Blue 12 was awful though. They'd clearly moved a load of snow over to make the run and then not pisted it, as it was all just chunks of varying sized pieces of ice. We only bothered skiing it once.

There's a FIS Freestyle Moguls event on there today and yesterday, but we didn't get the chance to watch any.

I saw on Tom Gellie's (Big picture skiing) instagram there's a "zipper line" created over by the Kaserer runs, and let's just say he made it look a lot easier than it is Laughing Laughing

I'll be up there again on Wednesday and Thursday as there's an IASI meet up there this week, and it looks like the forecast is showing it getting colder throughout the week and potentially some snow as well.

If you look at the Sommerberg webcam at Hintertux, you'll also see they've had the cannons running on the runs back down from Tuxerfernerhaus. Not sure when they started, but on Sunday there was patches of snow.

Looks like cannons started yesterday, running all day today, temps dropping and staying below freezing on the hills. There was.snow.forecast tonight tomorrow too.

Lovely day up at Hintertux today. There's an IASI members and educators meet on this week with about 30 people up there so I took a couple of days off work to join in the fun.

Snow cannons running all day up there including most of the way down to Sommerberg. I also noticed them on the black run from Ahorn down in Mayrhofen first thing this morning.

Conditions are quite cold up there, so the pistes aren't getting any worse, and the cannons are helping to improve the base.

Some snow forecast tonight, but not sure how much will fall, but we'll see in the morning Very Happy

So, turned out to be a bit more snow than forecasts suggested (depending on which forecast you looked at!!)

Snow level was quite low, some on the ground by our house at 650m

A couple of inches at the bottom of the lift in Hintertux

Up on the slopes it was probably 10-20cm of snow. Made for some great skiing.

It was cold up there today, noticeably, but it's just what was needed!

Nice to ski the last couple of days with @SaraJ who has definitely improved my skiing snowHead

Also @ skimottaret who has been over for the IASI meet up too snowHead

Skied Saturday on the weekend but not Sunday because I had a fall and woke up with whiplash.

Conditions on Saturday were lovely

We did still go up to Hintertux on Sunday, and walked from the valley up to Sommerberg, and again a lovely day

You can see the snow cannons starting to lay down a base in the Rastkogel area of Mayrhofen.

Here you can see the piste down to Sommerberg that's been created.

And confirmation it'll be opening tomorrow.

Just nipped out to Hofer on my lunch break and noticed the cannons have put down a decent amount of the home run in to Zell am Ziller, and the cannons are currently running from the Weisenalm (mid station) and up.

Here's a picture from our driveway

@russ_e, not for long you didn't! Laughing Laughing

Woke up to more snow than I thought was forecast, so we went for a walk with the dog

Then we went for a ski in Hintertux, where it was really cold

With wind chill it was -24º!

Then this evening, we went for a tour with the dog. A bit less successful, we made it 1km/100hm before a farmer drove up behind us and told us we can't tour at night, and on top of that, there wasn't really enough snow, and plenty of stones and now my touring skis need a repair job Laughing

Arrived in Lanersbach yesterday evening for a couple of days at the Freeheeler Telemark event over today and the weekend. Saw Jasmin Taylor in the Tuxerfernerhaus at lunchtime and congratulated her on her magnificent winning of the FIS Telemark world championship last season (and not one but two Crystal Globes!) Cool I asked her where she kept the Crystal Globes, she said they're in pride of place at her Mum's. Madeye-Smiley

Although there was a FIS Telemark race today at Hintertux she didn't take part, she said she's been instructing today (she's now BASI qualified) and she said "it's nice to be earning some money!" Very Happy
She will be taking part in the FIS Telemark race tomorrow though.

The snow conditions are pretty good, here's a couple of photos...

I was on one of the new electric busses that now operate the skibus service between Lanersbach and Hintertux. Very impressive, quiet and with good acceleration. https://www.hintertuxergletscher.at/en/information/plan-your-visit/e-busses-tux-finkenberg/

Apparently the planned link between Spieljoch (above Fügen) and Hochzillertal (above Kaltenbach) is not happening. I was chatting yesterday to the guy who owns the land where they wanted to build the top gondola station.
I also asked him about the rumoured link in the other direction with Mayrhofen. He doesn't own the land there, but I figured he'd know. He wasn't sure if the plan was still there, but he said if it was it would be so far on a back burner, it would be years before anything happened.

Hochfügen opened yesterday and plan to be open now until 21st April.
There's a lot of man-made snow but they've done a great job of preparing it.

@SaraJ, is that just Hochfügen or is access from the Kaltenbach lifts possible? If not I guess it's the bus up to Hochfügen?

@SaraJ, you're back in the shop then!!

@Alastair Pink, it's nice up there, we went up today, it was noticeably snowier on the way up thanks to Thursday's snowfall.

Have to say, i'm looking forward to elsewhere opening up next weekend, so we don't have the 30min drive each way, plus 30min of gondola before we can get skiing! Think we'll likely be at Zell am Ziller next Saturday!

That said, i'll then be up in Hintertux again from the 8th for a week for an exam.

We went along to the Mayrhofen Christmas market last night in the Waldfestplatz, and it's lovely. Big open fires, food, drink, music, christmas gift stalls, lovely place.

@Alastair Pink, Hochzillertal was open this weekend and then will be open for the rest of the season from the 6th. It's not guaranteed that the link lifts will be open from the 6th. That will depend on the snow. So, I wouldn't plan on accessing Hochfügen from Hochzillertal just yet!

@SaraJ, thanks! It looks like it's the same as the other Zillertal areas then with opening on 6th December. I go home on 3rd December so will either have another day skiing at Hintertux tomorrow or maybe have a restful day and take the bus to Mayrhofen and look at the Xmas market there.

Lanersbach has its Advent market in the village centre this afternoon, just had a tasty Zillertaler Krapfen for €2 nom nom....

@SaraJ, thank you for the info on the links. I guess a combination of environmental and costs (Covid etc) has stopped a lot of development ideas. I am not quite sure the Mayrhofen link makes sense anyway. The Mayrhofen end invested in the huge Moselbahn which locals have told me wouldn’t have happened if they didn’t believe the link could happen at the time. Looks like a big investment for not a lot of return now (although my favourite run on the mountain).

@8611, we drove up the main street yesterday at about 5pm to collect the dog and were surprised at the number of people on the main street, but we're talking 30-50 people, so it's very quiet, but busier than what we expected, i.e. ghost town.

The Christmas market was fairly busy, but it'll mostly be locals from the valley plus whoever may have travelled from the Inntal.
