Wow! Looks amazing and only Oct/Nov.
We are there in December. Cannot wait.
How ahead of time to book train tickets? Now or closer to the time? (Munich to Kaltenbach) |
In October I was diverted to Frankfurt from Munich. I'd booked return tickets Munchen Flughafen to Mayrhofen back in July, cost just shy 60 quid return.
Obviously missed train so when I was flown back to Munich had to get ticket on the fly so to speak, cost 54 quid one way.
You pays your money you takes your chance as the saying goes.

@Matrix, No, it's cold enough to start making snow.
Skiing at Hintertux today... Excellent conditions this morning and bit icy and scraped in the afternoon.

If you look at the Sommerberg webcam at Hintertux, you'll also see they've had the cannons running on the runs back down from Tuxerfernerhaus. Not sure when they started, but on Sunday there was patches of snow.

Looks like cannons started yesterday, running all day today, temps dropping and staying below freezing on the hills. There was.snow.forecast tonight tomorrow too.

Lovely day up at Hintertux today. There's an IASI members and educators meet on this week with about 30 people up there so I took a couple of days off work to join in the fun.
Snow cannons running all day up there including most of the way down to Sommerberg. I also noticed them on the black run from Ahorn down in Mayrhofen first thing this morning.
Conditions are quite cold up there, so the pistes aren't getting any worse, and the cannons are helping to improve the base.
Some snow forecast tonight, but not sure how much will fall, but we'll see in the morning

Just nipped out to Hofer on my lunch break and noticed the cannons have put down a decent amount of the home run in to Zell am Ziller, and the cannons are currently running from the Weisenalm (mid station) and up.
Here's a picture from our driveway

Apparently the planned link between Spieljoch (above Fügen) and Hochzillertal (above Kaltenbach) is not happening. I was chatting yesterday to the guy who owns the land where they wanted to build the top gondola station.
I also asked him about the rumoured link in the other direction with Mayrhofen. He doesn't own the land there, but I figured he'd know. He wasn't sure if the plan was still there, but he said if it was it would be so far on a back burner, it would be years before anything happened.
Hochfügen opened yesterday and plan to be open now until 21st April.
There's a lot of man-made snow but they've done a great job of preparing it.

@SaraJ, is that just Hochfügen or is access from the Kaltenbach lifts possible? If not I guess it's the bus up to Hochfügen?

@SaraJ, you're back in the shop then!!
@Alastair Pink, it's nice up there, we went up today, it was noticeably snowier on the way up thanks to Thursday's snowfall.
Have to say, i'm looking forward to elsewhere opening up next weekend, so we don't have the 30min drive each way, plus 30min of gondola before we can get skiing! Think we'll likely be at Zell am Ziller next Saturday!
That said, i'll then be up in Hintertux again from the 8th for a week for an exam.
We went along to the Mayrhofen Christmas market last night in the Waldfestplatz, and it's lovely. Big open fires, food, drink, music, christmas gift stalls, lovely place.

There's a Christmas market in Lanersbach from 3pm, then the Krampuslauf at 6:30pm.

@Alastair Pink, Hochzillertal was open this weekend and then will be open for the rest of the season from the 6th. It's not guaranteed that the link lifts will be open from the 6th. That will depend on the snow. So, I wouldn't plan on accessing Hochfügen from Hochzillertal just yet!

@SaraJ, thanks! It looks like it's the same as the other Zillertal areas then with opening on 6th December. I go home on 3rd December so will either have another day skiing at Hintertux tomorrow or maybe have a restful day and take the bus to Mayrhofen and look at the Xmas market there.
Lanersbach has its Advent market in the village centre this afternoon, just had a tasty Zillertaler Krapfen for €2 nom nom....

@SaraJ, thank you for the info on the links. I guess a combination of environmental and costs (Covid etc) has stopped a lot of development ideas. I am not quite sure the Mayrhofen link makes sense anyway. The Mayrhofen end invested in the huge Moselbahn which locals have told me wouldn’t have happened if they didn’t believe the link could happen at the time. Looks like a big investment for not a lot of return now (although my favourite run on the mountain).

There is also talk of creating a piste down the ski route towards a new halfway stop on the Horbergbahn.

@Alastair Pink, The Christmas (Advent) Market in Mayrhofen is only open at the weekends. The Innsbruck markets are open but that's a bit of a trek from Lanersbach.
Take care near the Krampus!

@8611, we drove up the main street yesterday at about 5pm to collect the dog and were surprised at the number of people on the main street, but we're talking 30-50 people, so it's very quiet, but busier than what we expected, i.e. ghost town.
The Christmas market was fairly busy, but it'll mostly be locals from the valley plus whoever may have travelled from the Inntal.
