Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@Alastair Pink, unfortunately the Dachstein Glacier is open only for cross-country skiing and touring. I was there last week and i saw a couple national Teams (Korea, Germany) but only for cross-country
All the lifts are away.
Its really devastating how the glacier decreases each year.
On the other hand i have to admit that there was really crowded with visitos...

@turms2, that's sad to hear about the lifts having gone. I think it would have been about 8 years ago when I went summer skiing there.

@JimboS, we went to Achensee on Saturday as it was so hot, and had a dip. The first time we've been in the water there. It's so cold!!

We were round at this spot which is less busy than Maurach and Pertisau, but if you were thinking of going there, probably not so easy to access without a car.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/ErXnTy3dJ6L6e9dj9

For those interested, we did a hike yesterday from the Hohenstrasse, up around some of the Hochzillertal ski area. Super quiet, we saw more Marmottes than humans!

@swskier, thanks for the tip, I ended up hiring a car so we are fairly mobile. We drove up to the Zellberg Stüberl today but views were limited, thick fog at the top, maybe a good thing as I think Kim may have freaked out at the view over the hairpin turn barriers.

Maybe Hintertux tomorrow, I'll check the webcams first thing.

Can't do too much hiking this week as Kim's is going in for her belated ACL operation soon after we get back. She could feel a niggle when walking down from the Talbach waterfall this morning.

@JimboS, in that case, that spot might work for you if you have a car. There's a slipway to make getting in and out easier with a paddleboard too.

Ended up doing a hike at Achensee instead of paddle boarding as it was a bit breezy and choppy but well worth the visit, it is very beautiful.

@JimboS, I just realised you said you were doing Talbach Waterfall on Monday. Literally next door to our house, our landlord owns the Stuberl there.

@swskier, what a great location to live, I'm very envious!

Well that concludes our 24/25 season. Kim's now scheduled for an ACL operation a couple of weeks from now, hope that works out well for next season.

Mayrhofen came through for us again this year, only one overcast day this week, the remainder was hot and sunny.

I was there at 8.15, for the first lift and called it a day at about 12.15 as the last run down was too soft and getting sticky. That was Tuesday and since then every day has been scorching. I can't see the snow lasting long from the plateau down to the Tuxerfernhaus if these conditions continue.

Certainly worthwhile then, lift pass cost aside, particularly when you can combine it with a normal alpine summer holiday elsewhere. I'm always surprised how late the first lift is you'd think it would be 7 am.

I agree, Les 2 Alpes opens at 7 am in the summer, Hintertux should do the same. The price for the ticket was about 65euro from memory. I paid about 98 total for a ski ticket and a return trip for Kim to the Tuxerfernhaus cafe. She wasn't skiing due to her accident above the Screenshot last year and the another tweek to the same knee in Ischgl in March. Good news is she just got a call from the hospital and is going in for surgery on Thursday.

@Steilhang, We had no issues, but saw lots of videos on facebook of the hail and flooding on the main road.

@Steilhang, We saw it coming and left work early. We were slowed down getting out of the car park by people videoing the storm coming closer but we managed to get the car under cover before the hail started.
It looks like if we'd been 10 mins. later the car would have been damaged. Thankfully the lift operators let us on the lift to allow us to get off the mountain before the storm hit... The lift stopped as soon as we were at the bottom.

Got all the balcony flowers off before the storms arrived here. Kitz being 5 clicks away seemed to have it ten times worse than we did here in Kirchberg. We`ve certainly had worse hail storms in the last few years.

Funny thing is as we moved to here from Sherborne in Dorset, we still watch the local news BBC news from the area which for us was the Bristol news. When the weather forecaster was introducing the weather, he mentioned the bad storms we were having across Switzerland and Austria. So it made us realise, unlike in the past, this wasn`t as local a storm as we`ve had many of in the past.

Decent and I suspect needed top up for Hintertux today, still showing 27km which is pretty impressive in July and after the heat

If anyone happens to be in the Zillertal this weekend and fancies something of a different activity, Mrs Swskier and I play in an English style brass band based in Innsbruck. We have a concert this Wednesday in Zillertal arena by the Fichtensee. The lift company are running the lift in the evening to allow people to come up and watch, hopefully with some nice weather and a sunset to accompany!

https://www.zillertalarena.com/en/summer/events/events-calendar/details/event/sommerabendkonzert-am-fichtensee-ret-brass-bandrohrberg/

If the weather isn't so kind, we'll be playing at the band pavilion in the centre of Zell instead.

Since we are on a musical topic, we were surprised to see a guy in full Scottish highland dress at the Biker Fest in the Hof a few weeks ago. We went over for a chat and found out he is from the valley and in a Tirol pipe band, the Red Eagles, who knew it was a thing in the Tirol.

@JimboS, interestingly (for some perhaps) the Red Eagles Pipe band came up in a discussion in one of our rehearsals the other month, which then led on to an explanation to us about how the word Pfeifer, to mean a piper, can also be used to describe someone as an idiot, for example when one of the musicians in our reherasal messed up!

There's your German lesson for the day.

Yesterday was the last day of summer skiing on the glacier until mid September despite fresh snow recently and more to come this week. The weather has been pretty rubbish for a few weeks now.

I noticed the Tirol Snowcard prices for the 25/26 season have been released, €1,169 with an early bird price of €1,029. A 4% increase compared to 24/25 season.

A day pass in Zillertal will be €79 up from €76 a 6 day pass for a weeks skiing costing €384.

Wow, is that a new thing? They are basically abandoning August skiing? There was 17km open last week though it was starting to look grey

@8611, I noticed it was advertised as such the other month. Presumably they've decided to scrap the August skiing to preserve the glacier as much as possible? I saw a video of 20cm of snow up there the other day, and there's similar due this week also.

Does that leave Saas Fee and Zermatt as last two standing for August skiing?

The tux has had a top up with more to come so timing doesn't seem great. Wondering what the logic is and surprised it didn't get more coverage, was a pretty big thing when it closed for a few days for the first time ever in previous years.

Ruins their "365 Tage Schneespass in Österreich" slogan a bit doesn't it, albeit you can still go up there.
