Anyone have recent first hand knowledge of the off-piste coverage at Mayrhofen or Kaltenbach? With maybe a bit of chance for snow tonight, would be good to know if either has a better base. Arena was definitely a bit thin and lacking off-piste today.
Too bad the weekend snow got down graded so badly!

I haven't skied the Mayrhofen area since 29/12, but I wouldn't have ventured off the sides then, and I don't think we've had huge amounts since then to make much difference.

Thanks! Kinda figured as much. Although Arena was actually quite a bit improved today with about 5cm. Actually found some good meadow skipping powder runs over at Plattenkogel.

Hello, maybe wrong thread to hijack, but do anyone know if there are any day lockers at Kaltenbach base station where one could store walking shoes and maybe a small bag?
I will be staying in Mayrhofen (25.1-1.2) beside Penkenbahn base station for a week and was planning several trips to nearby resorts with train and buses. Based on Skibus maps it seems that I have to walk quite a bit in Mayrhofen and in Kaltenbach to get to and from the train station. Or would I be better of just grabbing a taxi in the morning?
Also, if someone is in the area at the same time and fancy some rides together or have a bier to share some stories I would gladly meet up on the slopes.

Will be in Zillertall for 3.5 days skiing from Wednesday pm (two quick, advanced piste skiers). Forecast is looking quite cloudy on Thursday so was wondering which of Mayrhofen and Kaltenbach would offer the best skiing if the light is a bit flat?
Looking at the piste maps there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of skiing below the tree line at either. So maybe it's just on the flip of a coin as to which day we do which....
Inversely is one or the other generally better for skiing when the light is good? Appreciate it's all quite subjective. Thanks.

@gazatron, out of those two I would choose Mayrhofen. The Penken area into the board park, the run down from the Schneekar and also the area around Katznmoos. All have decent trees. If you ski over to the Eggalm area it’s nice and in the trees for most of it.
You can also try the Zell am Ziller side of the Zillertal Arena which is ok with some trees.

@gazatron, Kaltenbach probably has less tree skiing than Mayrhofen, there's only 1 run down to the middle station through the trees, the rest is above it.
As @Matrix says, there's options in Mayrhofen, and Zell am Ziller, but probably a bit more options wise in Mayrhofen. I particularly like the runs down to the Katzenmoos lift in the Finkenberg area of Penken, it often seems to be quite quiet down there whenever i've been there.

It looks like a lot of slopes are closed in Eggalm and Finkenberg. Also the skiroute 30 down to Horbergbahn has been closed for a long time. Is it due to lack of natural snow? Does anyone see any chance of the skiroute 30 open up next week?
Hopefully I will experience some sunny days also, would be nice to visit Hintertux on a sunny and calm day.

@Keke81, skiroute 30 hasn't been open all season yet, we haven't had enough snow in the valley for it to do so.
Looking at the forecast i'd say chances of it opening next week are somewhere between naught and zero.

I skied Zell am Ziller this morning with a friend, the first time i've skied the Zillertal properly since 1st Jan.
Snowing fairly heavily throughout the morning from roughly mid station and above, so inevitably visibility wasn't great and the pistes quickly became chopped up. Great fun though, with the black 20a being a particular highlight, which after the first scraped pitch became beautiful fresh snow.
We stopped off in the s'Legal hut for a coffee and to watch the first 15 racers in the Kitzbühel SL, it was the first time i've been in there, and what a great place. Well recommend heading off the beaten track to head in there. It's off down a track from red 19b. They also did a great apple strudel. Good to bump in to fellow SH @rdonalds who had our table as we left!
Around 12.30 we skied the black run back down to the valley, which resulted in us getting very wet in the rain, but it was fantastic. Steep slushy turns, loads of fun.
In the afternoon, nipped up the Penken area with Mrs Swskier for a couple of hours, which was good fun. Mainly sticking the Schneekar, Mösslbahn and Larchwald lifts to try and ski runs in the trees, but actually the skies did brighten up a bit so visibility was better than it had been in Zell am Ziller.

I note with interest the Schlegeis lift has not been opened this winter. Any news on the ground, so to speak ?

I haven't been to Hintertux since early season, when that lift isn't open anyway, so couldn't say until later in the season when i'm back up there again

I was up there on Saturday and stopped for a drink at the Gletscher Huette overlooking the Schlegeis speicher.
The reason it isn't open is simply because there is barely any snow on that side of the mountain. They have driven the piste basher up and down the newly remodelled piste a few times but it will require a fair bit of snow which does not get immediately blown off before they open it. I don't think they have any snow making up there on that side so they are relying on natural stuff falling and sticking before it gets blasted by the ferocious winds we have been having all season.

I skied at Penken and Eggalm over the last few days. Pistes certainly needed some snow but generally were holding up well. Yesterday’s snow really helped and the forecast for tomorrow looks excellent too. Despite the Eggalm side having quite poor overnight piste bashing it was skiable all the way down to the Rastkogel bubble. Next week should be very nice if the wind behaves.

Managed to nip out for first lift in Kaltenbach this morning 0730, then be back at my desk to start work at 0930.
Bumped in to @SaraJ for the lift up, and all I can say is, it's wet! Snowing from around 2000m currently, but rain below that. Visibility is awful too. Freezing level should drop throughout the day, and we might even see some snow coming down in the valley later this afternoon/early evening, but probably not enough to settle. The weather should improve though after today with some nice sunny days, and colder temperatures.

@michebiche, it sure does. I'm planning on doing the same thing again on Thursday before work. During March, Zell am Ziller open their lifts from 0655 on Thursdays, so i'll be doing some early mornings there too!
Looks like you've timed your trip well!
It was very wet today though!!

Greetings from Ahorn, amazing powder snow! And we’re almost alone on the slopes.
I went to Horberg and Penken in the morning and got soaking wet! But this afternoon at Ahorn makes up for it.
Tomorrow we will visit Kaltenbach with the hotel guide. Looking forward to that.
Hopefully I will have a chance to experience Hintertux on Thursday or Friday depending on the weather.

@Keke81, you'll find a small layer of snow when you get down the hill. We've got 2-3cm's in our garden.
Do try and make it to Hintertux. Looks like maybe Thursday should see a bit more sun than Friday, but keep an eye on the forecast.

By the time I started teaching at 9 it was snowing lower down. Skiing over to Hochfügen after the lesson finished was interesting - no visibility and very bumpy. And then untouched powder on the race piste when I went to put away the fences. So overall a variable day

Thank you! Glad to be here. Going with my wife who hasn’t skied for a few years, hoping to mix 6 days between Mayrhofen and Hintertux so will pick based on conditions. Do you think it’s worth dropping into Zillertal arena for a day?
I seem to remember my favourite runs from my previous time in Mayrhofen being from taking the first lift up from Lannersbach then zig zagging over from there.

100%. Personally, and it'll be weather dependent, I'd spend 1 day in Hintertux, 2 days in Mayrhofen, 2 days in Zillertal Arena, and then decide on your final day what you fancy.
It doesn't have to be in that order, but Zillertal Arena is worth more than 1 day, after all, it is the biggest area in the valley. You can spend a whole day just touring from Zell am Ziller to Hochkrimml and back (can be done quicker than 1 full day, but at a leisurely pace with a bit of exploring a whole day). I spent Sunday morning with my friend just skiing the front face at Zell am Ziller, and we didn't cover all the runs, mainly because we wanted to keep lapping black 20a as it was so good.
I'd also suggest you check out Hochzillertal/Hochfügen, but it depends how much you want to venture up and down the valley on the train.

I’ve got 2 full days and 2 halves - staying in Mayrhofen so staying on Penken/Ahorn for the halves. Thinking another full day trip over to Eggalm and back - would you do the final day in Zillertal Arena or Hochzillertal? Obviously somewhat weather dependent but looks decent enough this weekend. From memory Ziller needs train + bus vs just train for Kaltenbach lifts
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
@michebiche, Zell am Ziller is train and bus, but you could also take the number 8330 bus at 0905 from the train station, and this goes direct to the lift in Zell arriving at 0921, however you might need to pay for it, i'm not sure. It's not a standard ski bus, but the bus that goes between Schwaz and Mayrhofen.
Kaltenbach is a train and then a 5 minute or so walk to the lift.
Both are good fun, so would just be a case of whichever you fancy. If the weather is nice, Hintertux is worth considering also.

So, I've decided on coming to the Zillertal 10th-14th April. Where would be best to stay at that time. I'll be solo and largely avoiding snowbombing shenanigans, but would like a decent bar and some evening food options.
I've got an offer at a pension in Finkenberg which is appealing due to it being close ish to Hintertux (April backup), but would I be better off in Zell am Ziller or similar?
