@sheffskibod, I did wonder about a new thread… we could have done a few more runs, at least one more in Sesier alm whilst waiting for the bus and then back via San Cassiano but it might have pushed us over the edge from great day out to manic day out. I’d have missed my gluten free cake at Pralongia and that’s a heavy price to pay!

Arriving on Feb 1st to Arabba for my first trip in the winter with my 81 yr old dad and some of this ski buddies. I have skied a lot (for a Californian) in the Alps and typically bring my airbag, beacon, shovel, probe and either hook up with a local or hire a guide for a day or two.
Is there enough snow to make any of the off-piste routes skiable and fun in the Dolomites at the moment? Primarily thinking things off Marmolada or Passo Pordoi? Anyone seeing people skiing off-piste? From the measurements doesn't seem like enough snow, but not familiar with Dolomites so wanted to check here. To clarify, this would just be me, not my dad. I think I might go a bit crazy staring at all the Couloir's and surrounding terrain and not able to take advantage.
Can one rent something other than carving skis if I do go off-piste for a day or two or do I need to bring skis? I know in the Arlberg, Cham, etc. one can rent, but know it's different here. Thanks all!
We also went to San Cassiano last yeat om Feb 3rd. My partner is also an off-piste skier, so he was not excited about the conditions. However, he found a great guide called Giovanni from Alta Badia Guides and they did a off-piste guided tour of Lagazoui and Val Mezdi. Eventhough there wasnt any powder, they still enjoyed the day on corn snow. It might be worth a shot.
And also, last year there wasnt any significant snowfall 15-20 days prior to our trip, but snow forecasts look super promising this year until the 1st. I think there is a very high possibility that you’ll enjoy your time!
tried Colfosco this PM after it stopped raining/sleeting/snowing in Corvara and must have missed the best of it as it was quite busy. We then went up Boe and Col Alt to find fresh cut-up snow with hardly a soul in sight. It was great fun so we skied until the last lift.
Those of you who know the area will now those lifts and how busy they are but ca 3:45 for a few minutes my wife and I were the only people at the top of Boe, TBH it was a bit bizarre. The top of Col Alt can get quite unpleasant at the end of a busy day but to our surprise was lovely. The snow into Corvara was a bit on the slushy side but not as bad as expected given the earlier rain.

ps with the evenings starting later the lift closing times in Alta Badia seem to have extended to 16:45 (previously 16:15) so gives more leeway

It’s very busy. Pre pandemic, did the Snowheads Dolomites experts mention that it’s quiet every January?
Chatting in gondolas with folk from across Europe including Italy, they’re with their kids pulled out of school. Attitude is **** the state, save a fortune! So not just a British thing.
We’re out at first lifts, fantastic piste skiing, even Piz Boe piste 1 was smooth for a couple of hours.

@Snow&skifan, It used to be !! :: I was there last mid-January and it was the busiest I have seen in 15 years....
Time to stop recommending it ????

Still pleased we’re here, fantastic everything. Hit the slopes early, before the straight lining big units appear post hangover
Post pandemic/lockdowns, Europeans packing in as many holidays as possible ‘you only live once’?

Returned yesterday from 17 days in Selva. We had 16 days of blue skies, low temps and perfect pistes. One day of overcast. It was busy however. My pal Oss whom runs the Saltos Bar explained that January has become the new March. He said that March conditions had become so unreliable, visitors are now bringing their trips forward to January. Visitor numbers are now booming in Jan, but declining in March.
You know it makes sense.

It's actually Americans that are coming to Europe because Alps are significantly cheaper than any half decent skiing in North America. Their economy is booming and they got cash to spend.

Both are actually true !!!
And hotel owner told me that for some reason many more Dutch are now coming in January as well. Can you imagine if (when) Russians start coming back, January was their traditional month to visit

Must just be me that thought it was quieter than last year when we were there last week then?
There were a lot of French 2024, never herd a french accent all last week.
2022 was very quiet but that was when you had to have tests to fly and masks etc. Anyone who made it out then will always think it is busy now?

@albob, omertá! I'm joking but I'm not joking. Silence. Let them eat cake (in France). Les Arcs is the place to go etc.
I came in 2014 and met no other UK people. I meet quite a few now. It's very very concerning.
@Mollerski, December week before Christmas was uncharacteristically busy. I haven't found January too bad. I must have seen you in Saltos.
March after Fasching is my favourite time if it all falls into place. There's been a few recent years where good amounts of snow have arrived in March. I'm hoping for the same this year, even thinking of late March. The Usteria Posta lads posted a video of an empty Alta Badia with a foot of fresh stuff in April a couple of years ago.

Almost definitely. We were there in December also. I'm head to toe black Norrona with a POC lid.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I remember that. Jan 2022 was brilliant we booked a hotel in Arabba decent fare, booked one week in advance flights too. Yes you needed the masks to get onto the lifts/gondola but it was very quiet.
@Mollerski, ah, are you the guy carrying the box of Milk Tray?
I'm usually spotted in the ridiculous Italian national Kappa ski clobber with the tricolori troosers I bought when BA misplaced my bag for 10 days. However the Maestro di Sci illusion is soon shattered when someone tries to converse with me in Italian or I actually do some skiing.

Ha, that would be good way to lose some income ... You think Dolomites are packed with American tourists in winter ? Summer in Greece, Italy, France, Spain and all over Europe (including UK) is packed with Americans, leaving lot of $$$ there ... just saying

Lots of east/central Europeans here, the same last Feb. Slovakia, Poland, Czech Rep, Hungary. Families with kids … similar story, pulled out of school, big brother doesn’t control us. A new world thinking post CV19, similar to here …. folk have had robust discussions with headteachers, headteachers overruled.

100%
For almost 2 years kids were out of school, "online learning" was introduced and many parents are questioning why kids can not miss 5 days of school, do some "online" work and have some great vacation and family time with parents ?
And many of those parents are also working "remotely", I can ski during the day, come to my hotel, do some work "online", zoom meetings while sipping delicious Italian wine and rinse and repeat.
New world has emerged post Covid !

Remarkable that a microbe from Wuhan ended up breaking the social contract (in the UK’s case from 1945). I do feel for teachers, in recent phone ins to LBC and R5 they say a revolving door of kids absent for holidays is disruptive to the others when the absentees return. Even for 6 year olds, each lesson is a discrete building block.

Selva is very reliable in December, but please don't tell anyone.
Was heaving in Alta Badia today, I think everyone was squeezed into the Goldilocks zone above the light rain in the valley and below the clouds. It was a complete whiteout when we popped up to Pralongia, one of those “where is the edge of the piste?” afternoons where you hope the guy in the bright orange ski trousers knows where he’s going. But snow conditions were good once you were above Corvara with light snow falling on and off. Not a day for beginners though, lots of little bumps and people falling.
It was snowing when we came down about 4:15pm. Forecast is rain in the valley tonight then snow tomorrow so hopefully a decent dump up high. It’s looking sunny and cold from Wednesday so fingers crossed the rain forecasted for tonight isn’t too bad and the piste guys do their magic Tuesday night.
Ps this place is so ugly, the snow is horrible, the food is terrible, it costs an fortune, everyone should go to France instead
Then you can post your own questions or snow reports...

A question regarding Hidden Valley. On a sunny morning, how tricky is the red? My other half who used to be a sound skier, over the years has become a complainer, overthinking hazards that aren’t really there.

Great conditions from 8:30 for a few hours at all levels, corduroy pistes and wasn’t warmish at that time eg 0C at the base of the Piz Boe gondola.

It is mostly just a track down the valley with a couple of steeper bits :: the initial pitch from Laguzoi could be described as RED and also the section after Scotoni's

Yeah, wet pistes & terribly crowded & raining in Alleghe too. Completely agree that France has so many nice, friendly resorts.
