Colder weather forecast from next Tuesday
Kronplatz usually first to start the cannons.
First year we went to the Dolomites I had been watching the weather. First dump was early December so I booked. We went January and it had not snowed again in-between.
Had a great week but not as picturesque with grass at the sides of the runs.
This was more than twenty years ago.
Not had to have a winter walking holiday yet.

I remember years where it dumped in Dec and hardly snowed again for the entire season.

Brave or stupid - time will tell! I’ve never been to Italy and i’m really excited. I’m hoping the gentler slopes will be kind to me after a bad MCL tear in January.

I recall from previous years it being routine for them to have like 1000km of pistes open with functionally no natural snow fall whatsoever, or certainly very little

@8611, The area has world class snow making capability. However, making snow does require minus temps.

Target opening day this year is Saturday 30th November at Cortina, Kronplatz, Val di femme, Pellergrino and Civetta.
Target opening for the Sella Ronda this year is the 5th December (just three weeks from today!) and the First World War circuit is aiming for the 30th December, weather permitting. By the beginning of January they can sometimes have almost all the Dolomiti Superski area open too (1200kms!).
Last year Kronplatz had a great start with 50kms of runs and 18 lifts open. The year before they had 23kms and 14 lifts running on day one at the end of November.

Why do they wait longer for the WW1 tour? Is it just down to traffic? 30th Dec seems an odd date to try and open for, you'd think they'd need it from 26th

I expect that will be because some sections e.g the areas following the Croda Negra chair on the Fedare side of Cinque Torri that go on to Passo Falzarego don't have artificial snow making.

Ah. Quite like that run actually, feels like a little warren. I was thinking its pretty high there relative to other areas so shouldn't be an issue but of course it may not snow at all.

Nice to see the cannons fired-up on the webcams this morning - I might be working but the Dolomiten Panorama live stream tab is always open.

Looks like a dusting of natural snow above 2000m in Val Gardena this morning.

Hmm, yeah, that tends to be the weak point of the chain. You can usually get a bus or taxibus from Bai de Dones up to Falzarego when it's closed. Though if they're not running the buses between Pescul and Fedare it's a moot point!
