I’ve not done the black but looking at the map doesn’t it just get you to the ‘alley way’ through the houses anyway. Our instructor last year advised to snow plough all the way apart from the rollers. Still blooming awful at the end of the day though but I’d rather that than walk it. |
Depending on where you want to end up, that bit is unavoidable -- I mostly snowplough it.....

Well I’m all packed and ready for an early start to MdiC tomorrow. What are the chances of the forecasts being wrong about all the cloud next week and instead we get wall to wall sunshine?

We've just finished a fantastic week in Madonna. Pretty much wall to wall sunshine. It's been reasonably cold so the pistes are in good shape, although quite a bit of hard pack around.
The busy routes have been getting topped up with the cannons every night.
They're still building the snow park at Groste, 9 cannons going 24/7 and a GPS controlled basher working all day.

What's going on in Falzarego? Struggling to find any info about it or if/when Grande Guerra may open. Superski website seems to be flashy bumf with no real info. Would appreciate if you also share your "useful links"

I did most of it last week. It was only the fedare lift that wasn't open and I think that may only have been for one afternoon due to wind. The bus from pescul turned up but the driver said he wasn't going all the way to fedare because there wasnt enough room to turn the bus around (may have been mistranslated).

@GradientDescent, @8611, there was some discussion previously about the Fedare chair being closed until end Jan.

OK, just checked, Fedare chair opened on 11th Jan...so if it was closed, it was a temporary thing.
Wind can affect the Cinque Torri/Averau lifts. The chairlift stations have anemometers fitted that do an auto-slowdown or shutdown if wind speeds exceed the parameters.

@albob, We were in hotel Serena next to danterciepes gondola it is great to be so close to the slopes , ski in ski out , but also next to the town Center.
100% preferred Selva, so easy to change resort each day and loved not having to rely on busses. Also I like a bit of apres ski and there is none in Ortisei. I felt a bit old in Louis Keller but I still went every evening , I enjoy too much a good sing along and a sprits.
Our next skiing hols will be on the 10.01.26 and we are thinking booking this hotel again it was everything that we wanted.

Play it by ear (and weather forecast), but hope to visit other ski areas as well as Civetta...Passo San Pellegrino, Cortina/Hidden Valley, Arabba & Sella Ronda areas, etc

I have stayed in the Serena !! (many years ago) -- then, it was out the back door of the Ski room, step over a little fence and a short ski down to get the Poma : proper Ski-out-Ski-in

@albob, You have a very good memory. Not sure if u experienced the same but I loved going down danterciepes red first thing in the morning, “breaking” the track, swinging left to right without a care, what a joy.
@luigi, it is a very good place to learn without a doubt , just the right inclination.
current owners have been managing the place since 2002 ,it is a rarity to get Greek hospitality in the Alps, they really made sure you never leave the table hungry

@sean1967, not sure if still the case, particularly post Brexit if you are ex UK, but you used to be able to buy new clothing if left without bags for more than a given time and airline had to re-imbourse, doubtless the only options were the ski boutiques nearby

@8611, I had skis, boots (though without liners) a jacket and pantaloons I left here in December.
I had to buy a base layer, gloves, specs, socks, scantolones, and toiletries yesterday. I should be able to claim for these.
I got some liners for a day from the lads at Intersport at their new place across from Ciampinoi. Great spot and the lads are brilliant as ever but lacks the impromptu grappa slamdunking from their old wee Costabella place.

Arrived in Corvara yesterday and as I had a lunch time lesson we skied around La Villa and Pralongia today, generally really nice conditions but it was sunny this morning and south facing slopes were starting to get soft in la Villa by lunch time. It clouded over this afternoon and Pralongia conditions were generally lovely so hopefully La Villa didn't get any worse. We normally avoid San Cassiano as the queue can be hell but the cloud and light snow had quietened everywhere down so we dropped down via blue 9 at ca 3pm to find only a short queue. We took advantage and skied the red down and it was honestly the best condition we've ever seen it.
The new Brai Fraida chairlift is nice and comfy, it's 6 seats rather than 4.
Pretty windblown up high with so little snow off the pistes that the long grass is still vertical... however I only saw one short piste closed, the one that cuts through from the top of Brai Fraida towards Corvara.
It's snowing atm, they're not expecting much but even a little will pretty everywhere up a bit and every little bit helps.
re some of the comments above, we've just come from a few days in Val D'Aosta and it is noticeably busier here with several 5 minute queues where we had none over there. My instructor said it's been a busier January than last year, he's a happy man!
Planning to pop over to Val gardena tomorrow and try the Gardena Ronda as show in the video above. If time permits we might come back via Arabba on the SR but that might be pushing it so we'll see how timing is looking after the bus ride. Looking forward to skiing la Longia it's my favourite.

All good in Selva, pistes are ok, more snow would help and it is snowing now ... mostly cloudy all day but not to the point of affecting me with flat light, bit of caution since there might be icy patches in the afternoon.
Lot's of Americans, even locals told me so and I've had a pleasure of talking to few of them on the chair today ... "value for your buck" is what is making this part of the world so attractive for NA visitors, secret is out !

@richb67, would love to hear about the longia outing, I really didn’t enjoy the run this year, far far too many people, I get tense when there is no enough room to carve.
@Cheapski, Meet this lovely American family on the ciampinoi gondola they were asking whether there were lots of mushroom in the area, we all had a good laugh, love how friendly they generally are. I noticed that Ortisei in particular is popular with NA visitors.
Enjoy your holidays

Nice day at Alleghe/Civetta yesterday. Fair amount of cloud that got thicker as the day went on, eventually started snowing by mid pm. Raining/sleeting in the village all evening, so hoping there will be fresh up top this morning. Might head over to Passo San Pellegrino as the sky is clearer today
Pistes were good with a loose top covering, steeper stuff got pushed around exposing the hard pack in places in the afternoon. Over at Zoldo, there was a party at Bepi's, left the pistes nicely empty though. Even though it was Sunday with lots of Italian daytrippers, there very little queuing anywhere, mostly straight on, a minute at busy gondola, just the slow chai at Palafavera gad a 5min queue, but there was Biathlon competition going on there

@Harrow lady, I skied La Longia last Tuesday for the first time and I found it a little tricky. It was the end of the day (started ~1545) and it had been warm that morning so the snow was a little heavy, plus the piste was busy. It meant that there were fairly big piles of heavy snow at either side of the piste and a narrow, slightly-scraped channel down the middle. On the corners there were several lines of heavy snow off the narrow channel, most of which were soft but some turned out to be solid which wasn't a nice surprise! The light was low down the bottom third of the run so a little difficult to always see the bumps/ridges too. A tough end of day run for me following a 3 hour lesson in the morning!
I did enjoy the run but can imagine it would be much nicer in better/quieter conditions so I'll have to try it again one day.
On another note I also heard quite a few American voices in Alpe Di Siusi and chatted to a few of them (plus an Aussie!) in the cable car up from Ortisei. Also met some Brazilians, and talking to a lady at one of the mountain huts near the Florian runs she says it seems to becoming more popular with visitors from far and wide. Certainly busier in general around the Sella Ronda mid-Jan than I can remember in recent years.
