@Harrow lady, have a nice time, pack your sunscreen, looking like a lot of sun next week!!

Not weather or snow related, but this does seem a great thread for informed local info, so, I'll try... what's the best way to get from the bottom of La Longia in Ortisei across town to the Siusi gondola (and back)?
Is there a circular bus running, or...?
We're out in early Feb and would like to stretch the legs and visit as much as possible from Santa Cristina (1 inter-adv, 1 adv, 1 exp). Whilst not obsessed with racking up kms, we do love the feeling of travelling and getting about the place, and the Alpe di Siusi appeals for a day trip.
Watch from 12.35 mins (that's when they reach the bottom of La Longia)
So if I left a car in lagazuoi lift car park this evening, skied the hidden valley from the refugio first thing in the morning, got the bus or taxi from armentarola back up to the car, where might I drive and park it in order to one lap of the sella and have an easy drive back to alleghe at the end?
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Arabba? Really wish we hadn't taken the car, ruins the aesthetic of just travelling on skis
In more relevant news for people about to come out cinque torre and cortina skiing well, hard pack is visible in cortina but skis better than it looks, could maintain grip on most slopes, even the very steep black off ra valles. Some scrapey bits lower down in the trees. Accumulations of artificial snow on most pistes and skiing well.

Travelling to Penia in Val di Fassa on the 18th and I'm a bit concerned the weather for next week seems to be all sunshine, without a whiff of any fresh snow. How are the pistses holding up at the moment?

@flashharry, As long as it’s not warm they will be fine. They don’t get lots of snow but are excellent at snow making. We were there for a month last year and IIRC we had one decent dump of snow but everything was fine until it became unseasonably warm at +10.

@flashharry,
I was in Val di Fassa at that time last year -- first half of week was bitter cold ; second half unusually warm. Pistes were fine - don't sweat it !

@flashharry, it's staying quite chilly till midweek, then the temps rise somewhat towards next weekend to 6-7C in the valley, but on the mountain it's a lot cooler only rising slightly above freezing for a few hrs in the oblique January sun. Looks like it cools a bit after next weekend with a chance of high pressure breaking down and snow creeping in 23rd/24th.
I'm heading out at the same time as you. I think it will hold up well and I'm looking forward to some mild sunny piste skiing and lazy lunches on the terrace!!

Sella ronda skiing well today, some hard pack in parts, maybe warmer temps will help with that.
Another great trip to the dolomites, looking forward to getting back! Refugio at top of lagazuoi last night a real experience.
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

So did you book that for an overnight and then carry on with you holiday?
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

no that was booked anyway, had planned to ski on to sella ronda and then over to marmolada but because we unexpectedly had a car we got taxi back up to passo falzareggo and collected it, drove to arabba and did a quick sella ronda
Have to get back to arabba some time I'm not just passing through, the pistes are so dramatic

Arabba is probably the best spot on the Sella Ronda for upper intermediate/advanced skiers.
Plus because it's the corner with the least tourist beds, you seem to move counter to the main flows from the other valleys somehow.

Question for those in the know, we arrive in Selva around 14:30 ish this coming Saturday and hopefully can get changed and out for a quick warm up ski for an hour after arrival. We will have bought 6 day passes from Sunday. We found in Saalbach last year you could use the pass from 3pm the previous day - any idea if that is the same for Dolomiti? Thanks

@dunc999, I know this is common in France - but, somehow I doubt it in Selva (never heard of it being normal..)

@luigi, also so charming. It was my first time in the village as opposed to just getting the chair lift over it. Real kind of small frontier hamlet feel about it, you get the sense that not a lot has changed there for decades (apart from the prices I assume!). Towns with steep mountains like that around them kind of have a feel for them, like they can never get too big anyway so have to remain small places.

OK, so weather-wise, it's clear and sunny all this week and looks like continuing well into next week too. There's some speculation as to a breakdown by 23rd/24th.
Good news is the temps don't look as if they are climbing as high as initally feared, as there remains a northerly component to the airflow. 4C daily maximum is now being forecast at the weekend at typical Dolomites valley height at Arabba, but barely creeping above freezing on the mountain during midday hours...
I was happy to see (most) forecasts rowing back on the previous worryingly high temps (until the weekend at least). I'm currently in Ortisei and can confirm that the last two days have been very nice skiing with pistes holding up well. Only a few harder patches first thing in the morning then very good after that for most of the day (highest temp I saw on a lift was -1C, never sure how accurate those thermometers are mind). Hopefully it doesn't get above freezing at mountain level to avoid scraped, icy slopes, we'll see which forecast is accurate soon enough!
Hello, two excellent days of skiing so far. Sunday we started with a tour of Alta badia , windy and so so cold . The slopes were busy , to give u an idea for those of you that know, we joined the q in san Cassiano at 10.45 made it to the top of piz Sorega just after 11.30. We did not repeat my beloved n11. La crusc on the hand was a joy.
Today we did selva to Ortisei, sasslong B first thing in the morning was amazing, I enjoyed so much, la longia on the other hand was super busy, we waited 7 cars for the return back up to the top of seceda . The gardenissima slopes which very rarely get mentioned on this forum were in perfect condition and so much fun , please don’t miss them if you come here.
Snow is great, so much better than last year, very grippy,
Finally prices have gone up a lot, not for the drinks but food is about 10 to 15% more than last year. A sandwich is now between 7 to 10 and a small beer 4.5 .

@Harrow lady, yes thank you, though slightly worrying for my week next week that what might be expected to be one of the quietest periods (looking at the school holiday charts and snow in many other places) is so busy in places.

I’m not sure there is a quiet time around the Dolomites. As i understand it Jan used to be but is now popular with Eastern Europeans. I’m told the Italian tourist boards very proactively target this market to fill the Jan gap. Some of these countries celebrate xmas later than us (7th Jan?) so it makes good business sense.

When I was in Alleghe 3rd week Jan last year, most of the other guests in the Hotel were Poles and there were lots of mainly Polish & Czech (and a few Slovakian & Romanian) vehicles in the skiers car park. Wasn't busy on the slopes though.
Fascinating listening to the Poles and Italians trying to converse in their only common language...English!
Lots of misunderstandings as they both have heavy acccents and use English vocabulary unfamiliar to the other, but as a native English speaker I understood what each one was trying to say. Almost wanted to step in and translate broken English to clear standard English!

@toyah807, indeed we came this week because we tough it was going to be quieter than the last week of Jan which is our usual away week. Selva is overtaken by German and Dutch there are hardly any Italians or Eastern European, I am sure in other resorts is different. I was chatting to the couple sitting next to us at dinner time and they are 3 valleys regulars first time in the Dollies and they don’t find the slopes busier than France, so maybe we have been spoiled in the past.

I was there for the pre-Christmas week and it was much busier than usual. There appear to be no quiet weeks left. I suggest that those considering a trip to the Dolomites reconsider.

Forecast looks good for skiing. Dry sunny and warming up a bit. Hopefully the Dolomites didn’t get too much rain last week and will avoid hard packed pistes this week.
Which are the gardenissima ?

Quick mid day update - much warmer today! Warmer than forecast? I've had to take my fleece off, open my jacket, buff off, take gloves off on lifts! starting to get a little heavy in places by noon (at 2000m). Still fun, but hopefully back to colder tomorrow. And it's not too busy in Alpe Di Siusi, longest lift queue was about 5 mins, slopes busy-ish but you can usually find a quiet patch.
Not an actual piste - it is a Salom Race from the top of Seceda to Col Raiser
Slope would be from the top of the Fermeda lift
(I think !!!)

We are in Corvara 25th and desperately hoping for snow or temps that allow them to make it. We have been in Dolomites when there was so much snow there was a state emergency, and another year where it was strips of man made with brown each side. I agree with those saying there is now no quiet time in the Dolomites. Since Covid it seems to have got busier every year and piste etiquette is abysmal. This is probably going to be our last Dolomite year after 8 previous visits, plus next year could be busy with olympics. Got a second trip booked fore Are in Sweden in march so we will see what that’s like.
Been here since Sunday. I like it cold so first couple of days were perfect. Snow was it great nick. Still good today AM but much warmer today so started to get softer PM and the high traffic areas were a bit chopped up and bumpy.
If you're here over next couple of weeks don't worry, plenty of snow on piste, get out early and try and avoid the ronda as much as possible to miss the crowds and choppy conditions. It's not that busy btw, plenty of quieter spots to be found.
I spent the morning in ciampac/buffuare from selva. Lovely over there. The panorama run highlight of the trip!

@AshCopp, I think they finished general snowmaking before Christmas. They should have enough snow down now to last the majority of the season in most places.
@Peter S, could they have meant lift 56 Gardenaccia (pistes 25 & 26) from La Ila toward Badia?

@Peter S, my ski instructor back many years ago referred to meeting points on the seceda area as either the longia side or the gardenissima side. I always assumed it was the actual name .
@AshCopp, yesterday they were still making snow in selva.
We did the dantercipes red at 8.40 and the snow was fabulous no sliding whatsoever.
went to Laguzoi and it was surprisingly quiet took us no time to go there and come back. For those planning the trip, taxis are 8 euros and the horses 4.
Coming back it was a bit chopped but nothing major, going home we did again the dantercipies and the grip was not as good as the morning but still really really good considering how many people would go down the red option over the black run. You will have a great time

Sometimes it’s easier to do the Dantercepes black - less people. I Hate through the houses to the road in Selva, skied that when it’s been awful

I’ve not done the black but looking at the map doesn’t it just get you to the ‘alley way’ through the houses anyway. Our instructor last year advised to snow plough all the way apart from the rollers. Still blooming awful at the end of the day though but I’d rather that than walk it.
