Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Just out of interest - what’s the most favourable weather pattern for the Dolomites? I presume a NE or SE flow and cold air from the east?

It's Mediterranean lows that bring larger quantities to the Dolomites.

A Genoa low produces a dump and if a rare Adriatic low forms it can bury the place!! Shocked snowHead

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genoa_low

If you speak German, here's an even deeper explanation..

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mittelmeertief

My limited understanding is that the low tracks from the SW having picked up moisture in the Gulf of Genoa and meets the cold air mass in the mountains and Central Europe in general

If the depression gets 'stuck' over the N Adriatic against the Eastern Alps, Dolomites, Julian Alps & Balkan mountains, it can pick up moisture from the Adriatic and paste all that SE corner, like the beginning of Feb 2012 when Snowmageddon was experienced at the snowHeads B'day Bash snowHead snowHead

https://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=2771906&highlight=snowmageddon+arabba#2771906

Thank you - this will be our first time in the Dolomites in winter (February HT) having only visited in the summer up to now. I'm absolutely impressed by the quality of the snowmaking operation looking at the webcams. Really looking forward to our trip.

We travel next Friday (13th). The 14th is forecast to hammer it down, then it needs to calm the fk down. Shocked

Relax! It’s too early to start worrying about travel plans being disrupted etc. Whilst nearly all the major models are showing proper snowfall for the Dolomites next week, the timing and extent is subject to significant uncertainty still. The reliable forecast horizon is probably no more than 4 days whilst the current pattern variability persists. But the cold is there, the air masses are mobile and should be wet! So a time to relax and enjoy watching the forecasts/webcams knowing that the odds are now very much on your side if you’re in the Dolomites from mid December onwards…

We are flying in to INN on Sat 14th, heading for the Posta Zirm in Corvara for 5 nights. The setup looks perfect to me…

Wow yeah, that is shaping up nicely as it approaches snowHead

The local forecasters aren't committing to quantities for the weekend yet...other than mentioning 'snowfall amounts still uncertain, but locally consistent'... https://www2.arpa.veneto.it/meteo/it/html/meteo_dolomiti.php

It's always tricky to predict if big amounts of moisture will make their way into the Dolomites, but if that comes to fruition, you mid-December guys will be set up!! snowHead Cool

The forecast is that it will be falling mostly in the morning, nice and pillowy on the artificial base, it will be dreamy!! Cool

Just stay low in the trees and have a hut to warm up in if you get cold. If you're in Selva, try Piz Seteur and the run back down to Plan de Gralba!

Enjoy it, you don't get it all that often in the Dolomites. snowHead

A good dump still looking to be on the cards.

Bergfex have figures from around 25cm at resort level to around 45cm at 3000m mountaintop level. Snow will fall right down into valleys at 600-900m. Looks like it will be starting Sat evening and continuing until early hours of Monday. Accompanied by strong winds at altitude, so stay low.

Interesting commentary on wePowder about the development of a Genoa low which is why the main GFS and ECM forecast charts (and all the other forecasts based on them) have been showing variable and increased amounts of snowfall...they are not yet nailing their colours to the mast on this...but it is looking very hopeful...

https://wepowder.com/en/weblog/2024/12/05/fluctuating-weather-models-give-us-a-hard-time

Perhaps the most important development: a Genoa low develops on Saturday according to most models, which from Saturday evening will also start to bring a lot of snow in the (southern) eastern Alps. The upper level flow turns south and very moist air is brought in, which is forced to rise over the cold air mass below.

GFS calculates the most snowfall for the (eastern) Dolomites, Ost-Tirol and southern Carinthia, EC also shows more snow further north towards the Tauern and Salzburgerland, which is quite possible with such a setting. Due to the cold air present, the snowline seems to be around 500 to 1000 metres in many places.

Should these amounts of 20 to 50 cm in Austria and even more in the Dolomites be confirmed in the next 24 hours, PA#1 could just be issued for two completely different regions (northwest & southeast). We’ll keep you posted!

Still lightly snowing in Alta Badia, clear skies over Alpe di Susi, skiing conditions must be great. Let's see if the ~30cm forecast for the weekend materialises.

I think it might be a tad busier than usual, particularly towards the 20th, 21st. The precipitation lines for the weekend event are still all over the place. Something will come, but still not certain how much. The various forecasts will produce a snowfall figure from the operational run they're based on, but end up being less or more in reality.

Today the Sella Ronda area is reporting 143 lifts running and 272kms of piste open, perhaps about half the area?

https://www.bergfex.com/groeden-seiser-alm/webcams/c16562/

261 lifts and 835kms of pistes are now open throughout the Superski area.

https://www.dolomitisuperski.com/en/Live-info/Open-slopes

temperature will be key. Wet snow falling onto dry artificial snow tends to spoil the skiing surface. This time though it looks like the snow will be falling in cooler air so it should be drier and ski better.

ARPAV (Veneto Avalanche Service) have now nailed their colours to the mast...remnants of Storm Darragh will be hitting the Dolomites too!

https://www2.arpa.veneto.it/meteo/it/html/meteo_dolomiti.php

Weather warning issued for rain and snow above 600/900m and strong winds Sunday, but more so in the Pre-Alps, plain and coast than the Dolomites.

Snow-wise they are saying 15-40cm above 1200m in the Dolomites, 25-50cm further south in the Pre-Alps, maybe higher totals locally. Still some wiggle room there!

With rain-snow limits so low, the snow falling in the ski areas should be pretty dry, @IanTr is kidding! Laughing

WePowder have released their first Powder Alert of the season...

https://wepowder.com/en/weblog/2024/12/06/pa1-20-to-50-centimeters-on-a-large-scale

As regards the Dolomites they say this...

Because the mentioned Genoa low follows a fairly southern course, it will not lead to a true südstau everywhere in the Southern Alps. The further south, the better seems to be the motto; the southern areas in the Dolomites are likely to get 20 to 30 cm.

Saturday night and Sunday morning, there will be intense precipitation in a strip from southern Piedmont to the southern Dolomites, with a chance of another 20 to 30 cm. These calculations should be taken with a grain of salt; the precipitation distribution with a Genoa low is difficult to predict. Keep an eye on our forecasts in the coming days.

Can't work out if that is the same 20-30cm or there are two lots!! Laughing Laughing

In terms of progress there are now 160 lifts (out of a total of 206) that are open between the Alta Badia, Arabba, Val di Fassa and Val Gardena.
A few more runs have also opened today. There is currently 278 kms of linked piste skiing across the Sella Ronda out of a total of 476kms.

Kronplatz has just opened more terrain including the fabulous 7km Reid run right down to 835m. It now has 90kms of piste open out of a total of 120kms. 27 out of 31 lifts are running.

https://www.whatsupcams.com/en/webcams/italy/trentino-alto-adige/perca/livecam-ried-percha-perca/

Currently a dry -5c in Canazei, sunny and no wind. https://www.bergfex.com/trentino/wetter/stationen/canazei/

The green button is still pressed (!) so there is more snow to make this month to reach the seasonal targets Laughing

Snow is forecast to fall from the actual sky tomorrow then staying cool but a little unsettled with potential for a bit more aesthetic cover from mid month.
