Lol. Despite being nominally open Passo San Pellegrino webcams look like Summer in Nevada. Must be south facing on the gentle side (i.e. not the world cup run).

In fact I'm a bit surprised by the amount of places opening up 7 or 8km of slopes. I wouldn't travel anywhere for that. Assume the market is locals stretching their legs after Summer hiatus, doesn't make sense in terms of resources to open more as people generally not willing to travel far for another two weeks or so.

That's interesting, I thought most skiers would come up from Falcade but maybe these are people driving up from the other valley.
Actually it seems its only those shaded slopes there are open so maybe that's only lift.

Anyway, I was lightly tempted by a pre Chrimbo family trip to PSP but not with those numbers. Will keep an eye on how it builds up.

Just looking at the webcams and it looks.lile it putting some down around Arabba, Corvara..... the forecast looked like the end of the week

The problem with the snow is that it is disrupting the snow-making

It's certainly looking heavier on the Selva webcams than the forecast!

The Dolomites don’t seem to be benefiting from this weekend’s storm - the NW Alps are about to get pounded. At least the temps are low enough for snowmaking to continue.

The Dolomites might get 10-15cm out of the weekend...not a huge dump, but every little helps...

Meanwhile it's been building up nicely since yesterday...10cm on that wooden frame??...

Yes, most of the forecasts I look at are saying no snow, but it's definitely snowing and looks to have 10-15cm over the past 24 hours. I'll take it anyway, hopefully it stays cold now for the foreseeable!

Just out of interest - what’s the most favourable weather pattern for the Dolomites? I presume a NE or SE flow and cold air from the east?

The latest Wepowder forecast (linked above) gives short description of what might bring snow to the Dolomites
| Quote: |
| From Monday, the weather models diverge again regarding the position of small disturbances. The north stau seems to remain in place on Monday, possibly allowing some regions to reach 100 cm of fresh snow. We also see precipitation signals in Slovenia, Kärnten, and the Dolomites on Monday and Tuesday, which could mean the first serious snow of the season there. As often with südstau, low-pressure areas south of the Alps need to be in exactly the right position for a good dump. Whether this will be the case is still uncertain. |
"Stau" is a German word which can be translated as queue, used in traffic reports to mean a tailback, here it means a persistent weather pattern bringing precipitation when it hits higher elevations. In the northern alps when there is low pressure over the Baltic this can result in a damp northerly airflow over the eastern alps. If the pattern stays in place for a number of days it can bring very heavy snow (typically in the Arlberg but sometimes more generally as in the Snowmeggedon episode in 2019). A similar pattern over the Dolomites would be called a Südstau though my understanding is that they are less common

@luigi, brilliant stuff.
Hopefully there is more than 25cm coming but with the slow build and the snow cannons going a lot recently, and the forecast low temperatures, piste should be in great shape for Christmas.
I plan to go out on the 12th December for 9 days.

The Sella Ronda is opening today in both directions. This morning they are running 109 lifts and 198kms of piste across Alta Badia, Arabba, Val da fassa and Val Gardena.
Looks like Someone has pressed the green ‘GO’ button !
The Alta Badia is reporting 69% progress on snow making across its whole area. I assume this is the amount of snow they have already made toward the target they need to make to last the whole season ?
The Alta Badia is also reporting that 35% of all its slopes are now prepared.
Piste depth looks good at 79cms on the upper slopes and 69cms in the valley. The snow cover is almost entirely artificial.
lol

Current weather at 1465m is -9.6c and 90% humidity. Light wind and sunny.
Today looks great for skiing but the weather looks set to deteriorate with stronger wind over the weekend and snow falling on Saturday evening. Then it’s back to snowmaking on Monday with a big drop in upper air temperature. The outlook is more unsettled than of late.

Kronplatz opened more lifts and runs yesterday. It now has 24 lifts running and 67kms open, about half of the whole system.
Across the whole Dolomiti Superski area today there are now 187 lifts and 425 kms of runs open, a third of the whole system.
