Staying near Arabba this week for half term and I'm surprised at how quiet it is in general. Have spent a couple of mornings in Alta Badia and it hasn't really been busier than at other times..... Standard queues at Biok, Pralongia 2 and Piz Sorega but other lifts have been fine - ie. Ski straight on.
Also been to Ste Croce and Alba/Pozza which have been v quiet. Considering doing something more mainstream now and hoping that it's ok elsewhere....... Quite fancy Seceda, WW1 tour, SR or Kronplatz but slightly worried about getting caught out! |
We did Secada from Arabba on the BB including an anti clockwise SR and had plenty of time. About 1/2 hr queue for cable car back to top of Secada. Others did WW1 tour, some did Kronplatz but don't know how they got on.

Public service announcement if you’re under the cloud in alta Badia. It’s beautifully sunny in Arabba and val di fassa.

ProsFirst February HT hols in the Dolomites last week - have hiked around St Vigilio / Fodara Vedla a couple of timers in the summer but this was our first visit in winter. We normally ski / board in the PdS (in the process of buying a place in Montriond) and the 3Vs.
My humble observations are as follows :
Pros
- stunning scenery
- fantastic snowmaking + grooming capability (given the relatively dry season, the on-piste snow was excellent)
- some stunning long, tree-lined runs
- enjoyed doing the Sella Ronda in both directions in a single day
- loved the reds and blacks in Arabba (the first pitch of black 3 is bloody steep though, I won't deny that I found it quite challenging )
- Ortisei is a lovely little town / our hotel (Planlim) was superb with a great little rooftop spa and a hot tub on the terrace
- food (mostly), Aperols + Bombardinos
Cons
- long drive from Milan (will look at Venice or Verona next time)
- lift + piste naming convention on the piste maps + signs is confusing and takes a while to get used to
- every single Italian lift attendant that we've encountered should be sent on a customer service course + be taught how to smile
- disappointed to see that quite a lot of the Dutch and Italian (complete contrast to Sicily, Naples and the south) visitors were frankly rude
- most of our interactions with waiting staff in bars and restaurants felt "transactional"
- quite a few race-wannabes on runs they should not be anywhere near on
Overall, we had a great break and we will certainly be back at some point.

One of my ski buddies is in Selva this week with his wife. He's reporting ok in the mornings, slushy in the afternoon. Another of our lad's group is going out next week. He's packed his bathers, suncream and flipflops. The forecast is showing +10 which will pretty much knacker it.

I'm out in Selva next week too, going with a what will be will be attitude. As @franga, says there's always Aperol in the sun and late lunch pizza at Costabella. And having been ill for five weeks I may not make that afternoons anyway!

@melbouch, Just curious -- Pizza at top of Costabella (never been in that Hutte) or at the bottom ??? (La Bula..)

It’s been snowing in Alta badia since late last night. I’d say 3-4 inch so far higher up but it’s not that cold and so is very wet down the mountain. Forecast is for colder temps tomorrow and it should continue snowing until tomorrow morning, and again on Friday.

It snowed the whole day in Colfosco and Corvara today, lighter at times but heavy enought to make everything white again at village level. Higher up it feels like there is a decent layer of fresh snow. Conditions on the pistes were quite good throughout the day today, with visibility somewhat limited at times but pistes holding on quite well even later in the day around Corvara. Hope it stays cold enough over the next few days. There’s more on the forecast for Saturday so should remain fine at least for next week

Asking for a friend whose coming to the Dolomites superski area in couple of weeks for 6 days. They are a large family. 8 kids ! And are hoping to get multi day ski pass for large families. Any idea if the whole family would be eligible or there is a cap after a certain number of kids? Also, how best to show proof that they all one family? Is passport enough, with same family name but doesn't have address on it ? Thx alot !

We got home yesterday but got two more days of fresh snow, including a largely unexpected dump overnight on Thursday. 15 to 20cm on the lower slopes according to the local ski school instructor in Colfosco. Temperatures did go up in the afternoon but we got another top-up on Friday evening and everything was covered in white again on Saturday morning. Great skiing and stunning scenery all over, including the drive over the Gardena pass which looked quite spectacular.

Second day in Selva. We did the Sella Ronda green today but went off to the side round and about Corvara. It was warm. One bubble was showing +13 but the snow is holding up better than last year. We were out there the same week and you could swim through Borest and the bottom of Dantecepes was slushy by midday. The snow in the same places is soft but not getting slushy. Anyhow it’s amazing weather, amazing skiing and obviously amazing scenery. And it’s doing wonders for my mental Heath!

GFS suggesting heavy precipitation for early next week in the Dolomites (Genoa Low?). ECM has less.

Hi All,
Heading to Kronplatz starting Monday, March 10th - looks like a lot of precipitation is coming, with the snow line hovering around ~1700M. Will the skiing still be enjoyable here? I'm guessing skiing down the base valley won't really be a good idea because of the rain, but I would assume from the top to mid mountain would be good conditions?

@@Tubby1147, we are in the same boat but in Val Gardena. Difficult to know at this stage but skiing on the Monday doesn’t look particularly enjoyable:any fresh snow on the tops likely to be claggy. Snow level falls during the day on Monday and into the night so hopefully good after that.

@pjd Ah yea same boat. I'm rather new to skiing and haven't yet had the experience of it raining in half the resort with the other half receiving snow. It does look like after monday the rest of the week could be nice with some lower temps and the snowline further dropping.
If you can answer, should snow drop to the valley roads come Monday night, are roads fairly cleared by the next morning? We are trying to do Alta Badia the next day as well!
Thanks!

@@Tubby1147, yep road from Bruneck to Corvara will be clear. They are brilliant at clearing roads and it’s only the high passes in freezing blizzards that get temporarily closed.
Alta Badia is lovely.

Are the dolomites going to be skiiable starting this upcoming monday or should I find a different area in the alps to go to? Weather still seems to be showing a lot of rain below 1900M

Lovely sunnny day yesterday in Falcade, moved on to Canazei this morning in glorious sunshine, clouds have moved in at 11.30, forecast is showing cloud for most of this week, temps have dropped and the snow is in good condition from what I’ve been on so far around on the top part of Buffaure, dropping down into Poza is slushy

At top of Dantercepies now. Snowing gently. Came up from Corvara side. Most of the skiing to get here a bit damp but tolerable.
Run back down to Corvara already bumpy looking out of window.

I've just booked for next March and just about to book for January (still deciding on Christmas) so will definitely check out the burgers next year. We went in once for pizza last week and the waitress recognised us which was really nice.

Random question, does anyone know the name of the waiter at the Flora in Selva, we would like to mention him in the review as he was so great. We've already booked for next March and he was one of the reasons. Just wish I could get Christmas sorted!
