Thanks - we’ll try that - though 8 was fine actually, and that looks like a long drag!
Change of plan this morning, and ticking off some more reds on the Alta Badia side. 23 and 12 both in good shape.
So next topic - lunch recommendations - any favourites over here, with and bonus points for dishes?

To be honest you have to do the tricky bit of 8 to get to the tow, but 5 is quite an attractive ,usually quiet and scenic run of itself and generally worth doing but it doesn't save the awkward bit of 8 just below the Pralongia 2 chair base if going via the tow.

I’ll add the pork shank to that list, proper caveman sized lump of meat, and very flavoursome. Needed a reservation at 1.30, but quickly got a table.

How full would you say the restaurants are at say 2pm?
Our plan next week is up and out early , coffee or hot choc with cake or kaiserschmarnn at around 11 and then ski while everyone else has lunch on hopefully quieter slopes until stopping for lunch at 2pm …

Pralongia is one of my favourites, great food/drink/views and not too expensive. Recently renovated too, if you can, go to the new section on the left as you walk in, really nice (huge windows looking towards Colfosco/Gardens pass) and quieter than the rest of the place. Gin Al Pink cocktail is great too!
Utia Bioch is another fav, great food and particularly good wine collection. Oh and if you're not aware, several huts in Alta Badia run special gourmet dishes during the winter which are well worth a try. Both Bioch and Pralongia are participating I think (Pralongia have a lovely lamb dish this year). You should see the special dishes on the menu but if not just ask what their special gourmet dish is this year and they'll know what you're talking about.

Anyway, your timing is good to be back in CA. Fct for Mammoth is for Sierra-style dumpage later in the week. |
Yup, looking forward to this weekend! Back to my > 116mm underfoot skis and soft snow!
My comment is more that this Rifugio closes at 5pm. In the past apparently it was considerably later and people could have a proper Apres, but it's now 5pm with a new owner as was described to us. They had plenty of staff, they were just standing around with grumpy faces. Such a contrast to other interactions we had. I would say in general service was pretty good. Couldn't generalize one way or the other as some places were slammed with not enough staff, while others were amazing. One Rifugio moved tables around for us and the service couldn't have been better.
I have been lucky to ski all over the Alps, just not in the Dolomites in the past. Main reason was their statistical lack of snow, and this trip reinforced that. However, I would put it on my list if I saw a nice low spinning in the Med. and had some free time and $$$ as the terrain could be a lot of fun, it's just unfortunate they are on the wrong side of the Alps for consistent snow. I will return to my regular program of heading to the Arlberg or other snowier Alpine resorts.
Great place for those that don't go off-piste though!

@comish, all good. It’s ironic that the Dolomites, the place that gets such little snowfall, nonetheless has “guaranteed“ snow at the same time. Other places should be studying their snowmaking means and methods, as they’re probably next.

Yes, you are 100% correct on that. So impressive the amount of terrain that is covered. Some serious $$$ was invested in that system.

Perhaps why "snow making" was invented in the Dolomites, most of the kit is made in the area.

@comish, we love the Dollies because you get more sunshine days then other resorts, don’t like it when you can barely see or get very wet and cold, with the sunshine everything is better.
Last I was in solden we had only 1 day of sunshine, imagine that, 5 days of trying to make the most of your holiday when visibly is less than three meters, no thanks

Thats exactly what we do (if you’re not too picky on the term ‘early’). Trieste was still full at 2.15 when we left, but we were only quoted a ten minute wait when we arrived at 1.30 and put our name down (that was for just two of us, mind).

Ok, the sella ronda is on ! We’re going counter-clockwise, we’ll step-off at colfosco to get a warm up blue in, and then see what the rest holds!

If you're doing it counterclockwise and arriving in Corvara later and want to avoid the worst slopes it's worth branching off into the Alta Badia at Passo Campolongo, or go down the blue to the bottom of Pralongia the final run into Corvara can get very busy and unpleasant at the bottom late in the afternoon.

So already a wrong turn - in the cloud on the Gardena side, and the blue 2 turned out to be a black - oops. This was a ‘cause for concern’ but what a windup- surely the steep pitch must be around the next corner, and then we’re at the bottom.
Having a hot chocolate reset at the top of Campinoi, and a gap in the clouds comes and goes. Onwards!

The comedy of errors continues - we elected the ‘easier’ red 6 - what on earth is up with their piste grading? Nope, we are actually on black 3 …

Last 2 days have been good but conditions a bit mixed, it's been a bit warm so you needed to stay up high.
Yesterday (Tuesday) we did a few runs first around La Villa and the pistes were excellent but at 10:00 am blue 25 / red 26 was suddenly heavy. However higher pistes were pretty good all day and Alta badia was very quiet. The only queue was about 8 minutes at San cassiano ca 11am, we should know not to go there in the morning but the quiet pistes lulled us into a false sense of security.
Kudos to la Villa ski school who bussed the group who would have been using the heavy blue slope up to Colfosco for their morning lesson, one of your group is in that lesson and had a great time.
Skied the SR clockwise from la Villa today with mixed ability group, not a meaningful queue in sight. Pistes were mainly excellent until ca 2-3pm especially around Canazei (Passo pordoi) and val gardena where they seem to have had a good few inches of fresh snow. I say mainly as it was a bit bumpy but all fresh snow so not a problem even for our 2nd weeker. The only problems were very soft snow lower down and low cloud which seemed particularly bad in val gardena, we popped over to monte pana and visibility was zero so we came straight back and couldn't see the edge of the blue skiweg. The red running from Plan de Gralba into Selva was pretty bad but also not too busy, we got straight on the little 3 man chairlift which last week had a decent queues at a similar time.
Seems generally quiet and an instructor told one of our group that they weren't fully booked this week but are back to full capacity next week as various countries have half term holidays.

Following this closely! Saw pictures of the clouds at Marmolada and it was stunning! I'm kind of hoping I get to see something like that while I'm there next week. I'll be on a plane in two days; I can't wait! The sad part is that I know it will be here and gone before I know it. I'm not wishing my life away, it's just how these things go. Going to breathe deeply since I know it will (likely) be crowded next week.

Somehow we managed to walk straight into the cable car at Lagazuoi without queueing this morning so had a play on the slopes on the Cortina side before going up again (only 15 min wait) for the main event! Fabulous sunshine and the most amazing early lunch at Scotini’s. We watched the ice climbing for a while before getting the gee gees back to Armentarola and a play around Pralongia. Early finish, but a super day.

We also had a great first visit to the hidden valley - it really was perfect weather for it, particularly after the week of continuous overcast (normal service resuming tomorrow). Skied over and arrived at the taxi rank at about 9.20, and then a five minute wait for a ride up, then straight on the cable car. While the area around the viewing platform was busy, the run itself was very quite - several stretches where we were the only people in sight.
Only downside was the fifteen minute queue to get back up Piz Sorega afterwards, but one of the only times I’ve had a significant wait all week, so really can’t complain.
We spent afternoon on that side, and after my wife headed back to Corvara at about 3.30, I rounded the day off doing the black and red 19 - both in excellent condition even at that time of day. After the two easy blacks we encountered on the sella ronda yesterday, it was a good reminder of what a challenge (for me) a ‘proper’ long black can be.

I’ve been using the openskimap this week - thanks for the recommendation - but one thing I noticed when I reviewed the two 19s as per above - it has the max slope of the red as 39’/82%, while the black as only 37’/ 76%. Certainly didn’t feel that way round, unless I missed something?
