Anyone in 3 Vallées last week or this coming week who knows what the pistes are like?
We’re arriving on 1st March for a week.
I know there’s not been much heavy snow for a week or so, so just wondering what the runs are like out there.
We’re staying in Les Men so will be mostly skiing & boarding the VT, Les Men valley, but can move around during the day if we need to |
If you download the 3V app the webcams will give some indication of conditions. The app is also useful for telling you which lifts are open, and has other handy features.

Can you help regarding parking in Val Thorens please ?
Some context: our daugther will race at Etoile d'Or 12-15th march. She will be with her team at Val Thorens.
With my wife we been only able to find a rental at les Menuires
My wife is disable (french blue badge) and we will need to park at Val Thorens every day close to the Stadium.
It seems, the best option is Stadium Car Park.
For those who are very familiar with Val Thorens, how does Stadium Car Park looks like in terme of availability ?

Might it be an idea to speak to the Tourist Office in Val Thorens and explain your situation?
and perhaps the same with the race organisers?

I did and they have no clue how to answer the question.
it seems they all are able to answer questions to people staying sat-sat with parking booked in advance....

@thierryd, Have you tried emailing the ESF office? It has been a few years since I last raced at Val Thorens but we were allowed to park on the road as well as using the Stade car park, I would hope that a blue badge would mean a bit of priority.

Heading to Mottaret in 2 weeks time, bringing my 3 year old. Some days I was planning on taking him on foot further up the mountains to meet the rest of the group for lunch.
I've never travelled on foot via lifts before, may sound silly but chairlifts, there is nothing out of the normal other than scan through and sit down? Is there a process for coming back down a chairlift?
Looking at trying to take him up to Mount Vallon peak but wanting to try and understand how to get back down!

On the piste map, you'll see some of the lifts are indicated with gondola style lift icons, you can go up and down those on foot without skis / board.
Only the lifts which are indicated with a chair lift icon would you need to have ski equipment and these are up only and not back down.
That's how I intepret the maps anyway.

That was my understanding too but they have a pedestrian lift map and there are chairlifts on it:
https://www.les3vallees.com/media/download/foot-map-3-vallees.pdf
Which made me think you can go up and down them on foot.

I have seen people on chairlifts in different places (can't remember if Paradiski or 3V or both). No specific procedure, the liftie will usually slow it down though.

i'm pretty sure some of the chairs allow down lifts for pedestrians too though

My understanding is that there is the pedestrian pass available in the 3 valleys and that it can be used on the lifts shown in your link, but no other lifts.
To get to Mont Vallon, you need to go up Plattieres which is a gondola. Then switch to the Plan des Mains chair to go down, the liftie at the top would slow the chair for you to hop on / off, but going down a chair is a bit of an odd experience. You then walk over to the Mont Vallon gondola. You repeat the process to get back to Mottaret.
My only concern is your 3 year old in the chair lift, but all the chairs in the 3 valleys do have an extra guard for small kids.
You could also go to the top of Saulire on Pas du Lac, and even over to 1850. !850 might be better by catching the bus to Meribel, then up Saulire Express, down the cable car and then down the Verdons bubble. No chairs involved!

I can't remember for Mont Vallon specifically but gondolas will usually have a download entrance on the other side of the disembarkation point for skiers coming up, for pedestrians and/or skiers that want to download. At the bottom you exit as you enter the station on the opposite side to where all the skiers are queuing up and there will be a separate exit from the station.
On chairlifts for upload you just join the queue as normal and the lifty will slow the lift right down and make sure you have a chair to yourself so it can be slowed again at the top for you to get off. To come back down, you need to attract the attention of the lifty first so he can again slow it right down and/or stop it for you to get on. With a small child, they'll probably stop it completely to make sure you're in place and ready to get the bar down.

Guess thats what youd expect being highest. Looks like its been warm and sunny all week, are pistes still ok above 2000m in most of the other areas ? Or is it getting a bit heavy/wet even that high in the afternoons.

Yea it’s been okay, only wet and heavy right at the bottom of the runs at resort level in Les Men at the end of the day, but up top it’s still good.
Was over in Courcheval / Signal side and Meribel today, was still good but a bit firm and less grippy.
Will be going back over to Orelle tomorrow hoping conditions there still nice

Yes, you can ride some chair lifts as a pedestrian as shown on that map. But also look carefully at it - Cascades has a red arrow pointing up the hill. This means you can only ride up the chair. You can NOT downride Cascades. This links up with some of the walking trails.
And the map is a little out of date. Cime Caron is closed for the entire season and therefore you can NOT connect on foot from Val Tho to Orelle.

Snow has deteriorated noticeably overnight in the Courchevel valley. 2 main culprits : strength of wind and ambient temperature. Anything below 2,000 metres was soft, sugary and lumpy by 1PM.
|
|
|

|

Yeah snow is really pretty crap below 2000m although there's enough of it it's very heavy, granular and lumpy by lunch getting. Top 2/3 of la masse was still pretty good though today despite the wind. Doesn't feel like any of that snow is going to turn up here.
