Once had a chair stop for about 5 mins in Morzine I think it was. Right in the line of a snow cannon. Felt like 30 mins sat there being blasted while everything just froze to us. Looks like they’ve the cannons on all over Courchevel area including down to la Tania.

@dh900, while it's "Possible" to visit Folie Douce on just the Les Men Pass - as others have said, you may as well upgrade to 3V. it's nice to have option to dip over to Meribel or VT even if you're based in Les Men.
The Cumin run back to Les Men isn't as bad as people make out. Did it last year on a (freshly waxed) Snowboard.

It is possible to access the Folie from the LM lifts (Bruyeres or Mont de la Chambre) but you have to ski down a black run (Goitschel) to get there. |
Agree with what everyone has said about just getting the full 3V pass. If your capable of using it then it seems mad not to spend the extra €70 to make the most of the 1000s you’ve already spent to be at the heart of the worlds best connected ski resort.
But if for whatever reason you do only have an LM pass but you want to get to the Folie Douce without having to spend €50+ Euros on lift passes to do it then it’s worth knowing that Goitschel, or at least the bottom pitch of Goitschel which is the only bit you need to ski, is the tamest black run in the whole of the 3V (IMO). It’s wide and groomed every day, a bit steep and it will get choppy towards the end of the day but for someone who can control their turns it’s nothing to be worried about for just the short pitch to the end.
Whether the Foule Douce is worth the effort is a whole other debate! It certainly not somewhere to go if you’re scrimping and saving!

For the 3V regulars, how is the opening looking for this weekend in Val Thorens? Is it a good amount of lifts/pistes? Does it tend to get crowded on the first weekend? Tempted to make the trip out of GVA.

A decent amount of lifts are set to open according to the website. https://www.valthorens.com/temps-fort/la-grande-premiere/
I think the rain/snow line of yesterday (which shot up from well below 1000m to around 2000m over the morning) stayed below VT. It was very windy last night. Temps dropped way back overnight, so we woke to a couple of inches fresh dry powder here in St M on top of frozen slop. Today we went up to Les Men for a walk around the Plan D’Eau area. There were around 3 inches of fresh snow on a crust.
Roll on tomorrow!

@Perty, you mentioned the wind yesterday. In his video on the La Tania site today, Tim Wall said Les Menuires experienced a 165km wind, which seems barely credible

It was properly howling last night. Loads of trees down on the roads around various resorts (quite a few down in the valley Albertville direction too). We missed the worst of it by a long way down in Bozel but still a couple of trees down around the village this morning...

Yep a bit of ‘fitness skinning’ - where it has been pisted it is Ok, but not worth venturing off the sides yet - though there was one set of tracks in the Curé yesterday that actually looked OK…

Hello all , apologies if this is deemed to be posted in the wrong sub category , I am new here! I'm planning to travel out to Les menuires/VT on the 23rd Dec in a campervan . As i'm fairly green to the 3V's area , would anyone have some knowledge on the likelihood of available space in the Les Menuires aire ? I've never been out to the Alps before the end of January so I have no idea how busy resorts get over the Christmas break!

@Mr.Orange, are you referring dedicated parking for vans in les Menuires? -https://lesmenuires.com/en/camper-van
I can't help re how busy it would be, but if you arrive on 23rd December, you are arriving a few days ahead of the New Year crazy week.
From cursory glances occasionally driving past on the main road during the winter, I don't think I have ever thought it looked completely rammed. Let us know how you get on!

@Perty. , Yes that's the Aire I was looking at. That's better than nothing , thank you. No advanced bookings so it just seems to be first come, first serve setup. I was originally looking at the small aire in VT but that seems to be fully booked for MoHo's . I will report back!

Just confimed it will be closed for the whole saison! Obviously they fckd up big time. Both cars are crashed and will be replaced. Main takeaway: never hand out the master password to idiots.

What a disaster, operating the lift manually..... with a "very experienced" operator.....
Restaurant delayed and maybe opening in January - How busy will it be now ?
No foot passenger access to Val T from Orelle
No foot passenger access to the highest people in VT
No access to some of the best skiing in VT (this is good and bad)
And they are hoping to have have the lift ready by next season.. Hoping.........

Not entirely true. You can access all the terrain by the Orelle cable car.

@NoMapNoCompass, not sure I’d agree it looks great low down, typical early season thin conditions, not much depth of snow at all on the buildings around la Tania. The main pistes will have artificial snow to make them skiable. Folyeres bottom half not open yet which tells you something…..

What proportion of the lifts do you think will open next week? The map is looking quite limited at the moment.

Usually about 60% the week before Xmas and close to full opening Xmas week. First week is usually big lifts only, around 30% of capacity.
With regards to LT, it's opened a week earlier than normal this year and apparently Folyeres is shut for safety reasons because they want to check that there aren't any tree branches under the surface after the storm weather. It's cold enough to run the cannons so should be open by the weekend.

Wow, this is disappointing.
And also noteworthy that Val Thorens have not communicated the closure. In fact the Val Thorens website still lists the Orelle link as a “WAY TO GET HERE”.
How many people will turn up at Orelle (with all their luggage) for their week in Val Tho not knowing Cime Caron is closed?
I was planning on coming this way - thanks for the heads up.

Heavy lifting gear on site today to remove both cars. Signs on bubble up to Cime Caron confirming closed for season. Although crane appeared to have snow chains on the tyres can’t believe it drove up on the piste.
