Quite a blizzard today but not as much snow as originally forecast (around 15cm at 2000m). All 3V links were closed and there were problems on the roads with cars stopped to fit chains. More snow is forecast tonight and tomorrow, which will hopefully cover the icy patches on the lower runs & the heavier off piste snow conditions, which were noticeable after last Thursday's rain and re-freeze. Sunnier weather is expected from Tuesday. As regards lifts, I am not aware that Dent de Burgin, Cherferie or the Olympic chair have been open yet this season in the Meribel valley; Marmottes hasn't been running; Suisse has had mechanical issues; the Sauliere cable car is apparently only running to 1pm on weekdays; Dous de Lanches stopped for 25 minutes on Friday (after chairs slipped on the cable) and St Martin 2 was closed for a while yesterday afternoon - so keep an eye on the 3V app to check what's running. It may also be useful to know that there are new toilets at the bottom of Tougnette2 and at the top of Roc 1, above Les Menuires.

Not sure if this is relevant to ask on this thread but given the title I'll take make chances ...... is there a recommended supermarket to stop at before getting to LM like a super U for example, or are the in resort supermarkets sufficient but just costly.

@Mike S, Looking at the webcams and weather radar I had hoped that more than 15cm would have fallen at 2000m throughout the whole of today. That's a shame.

@Bram We favour stopping at Aldi in Albertville for basics (including wine!) and then getting anything else that we need at the Super U just past Moutier. The resort supermarkets are defintely more expensive and have less stock.

To continue Mike Ss toilet chat also worth noting that they have swapped the ladies and gents at the bottom of Saulire Express in Meribel without any signage! (now gents on the left, ladies straight ahead). Hope that helps someone avoid embarrassment.
Cherferie chair did run on Saturday for a while.

Oh I think way more than that fall today. I am lower (1350) and I just measured what’s on top of my car : 18. And it rained quite a bit until 12 here (pretty sure it was snowing at that point at 2000).
But when the wind blows (like it did today) it’s almost impossible to get a sense of the snow height. Take a look here for instance: they measure snow height in 2 different points, a few meters away. And there’s a 40cm delta!

In 1650. Kids thinking about bussing to Meribel as we skied out 1650 and 1850 y/day (lower runs only open). I’m thinking that’s a long way to go for similar skiing especially with road conditions. Will it be worth the effort? (Assuming links will be shut again)

There has been another 20 cm overnight in Mottaret, and it is still snowing, so things are looking a lot better. Avalanche canons are going off, so there will definitely be late opening on the upper lifts. According to the radio, Pas du Lac 2 and Saulière Express 2 will be closed all day.

@Mike_S is Loze a lift that is likely to stay open later if they open it now? (assuming links to Meribel from Courchevel might open- were orange a while ago red now)
So what I’m really asking is if they open links early on is that an indication they expect it will stay linked all day?

I’d stay put today … 1650 (especially, the Chapelets reds + the off piste on skiers right) will be lovely in fresh snow.

Just back from a long weekend (Thurs-Sun) in Val Thorens.
Friday morning was overcast but quite bright with good visibility, and Friday afternoon the sun (for people in the UK in the past few weeks, it's a bright yellow thing in the sky ) came out. Pretty strong gusts of wind at times.
Saturday was a perfect day - sunny and "warm" (-6 but felt around 0), with lovely firm snow (but not too hard). Just amazing.
It was absolutely bucketing down snow in VT yesterday. Some reports say 50cm at resort level - and that sounds about right. This site (https://www.les3vallees.com/en/live/weather/val-thorens) was updated since I started writing this post; it said 7cm earlier which was hilariously wrong but it now says 96cm of fresh as of today - which I can easily believe.
- About 5cm had accumulated overnight (it started snowing before dawn sometime),
- another 10cm by 11 am when we decided to call it a day as conditions on mountain wasn't fun for the kids (cold, windy - the snow/ice crystals were stinging our faces, with bad visibility due to the blizzard, and flat light) plus we had to travel back without snow chains.*
- I cleaned the snow from the windscreen etc at that point, but another 8-10cm had accumulated by the time we were ready to leave by around noon.
- cleaned the snow from the windscreen again, and started packing the car, took some last pics etc - when we left 30 mins later another 2-3cm had accumulated.
Whoever is in VT this week, will have a pretty crappy first couple of days and then when the sun comes out tomorrow for the rest of the week will have incredible conditions.
*I bought some snow sock type things in resort but the profile of the tyres made it impossible to get my hands behind the wheel to fit them on... Btw the Spar in the main bit of VT has a decent stock of snow chains and socks (price range from EUR70-100); Carrefour does not stock any; you can also buy some at the entrance to the P1 parking just below the Carrefour.

Loze is usually shut because of very high winds or avy risk above Pic Bleu and the Boulevard (so no way to ski back to Meribel). The Boulevard is more of a problem than Pic Bleu and usually stays shut longer.
It's usually one of the last lifts to shut because of high winds because it's so sheltered in the forest, so if it does open, it will probably stay open. However, you can't get back to it from the La Tania side unless Dou des Lanches is open, which is far more exposed, and had a serious technical issue last week. So my experience is that they either open both Loze and Dou des Lanches or neither. From La Tania, the much newer Bouc Blanc chairlift is the more reliable lift in high winds but that only takes you to Courchevel.

Yep Chapelets were our first two runs. Never ever skied such deep powder on piste!
Did get to 1850 and did under Coqs a few times. Amazing conditions. Watching piste bashers coming down to 1650 as we speak throwing up bonkers amounts of snow. Tomorrow will be awesome!

@Perty, this time of year the sun doesn't get that high, so I don't think it will have much affect on the snow (apart from firming up the offpiste!), maybe cosmetically it'll melt, but even the warm days last week the snow on the trees around the bottom of Aguille de Fruit was still there, despite air temps up to 9 degrees in Meribel.

Merry Christmas! Champagne conditions today - bright, cold, sunny weather with great snow conditions. Creux, Marmottes, Park City and Suisse had all been pisted, so it was worth getting out early. There had been considerable piste security work over night and there were numerous induced avalanches under the avalanche canons, particularly on the right of Suisse. Avalanche risk had droped from 4/5 to 3/5. Most lifts in the Meribel and Courchevel valleys (including Coqs) seemed to be running, although Mt Vallon was late opening (10.30am?) and Roc Mugnier was delayed (10.15 am) and seemed to be stopped intermittently throughout the day. Unfortunately, the new 3V app didn't appear to be operating properly, so you couldn't find out what was open. It is worth listening to Rob Smart's ski report on Radio R'Meribel (FM 98.9) in the morning to find out if there are going to be delayed openings. The Boulevard de la Loze was closed all day leaving Pic Bleu the only return route from la Loze, which would have been challenging for novices. We also found the green Plan Fontaine run down to La Tania surprisingly hard and icy, which, combined with flat light in the shade, made it not an easy run. More great weather forecast for the next week.

Happy days- Roc Mugnier and Chantarossa open for the first time so far this week in the afternoon today so our ski in ski out apartment in 1650 was -Bus service shocking up and down the Courchevel valley when we’ve been stuck before today. they could learn a thing or two from the Austrians on that front.
On the plus side just saw an amazing fireworks display over 1850 from our balcony- perfect view!

Fellow skiers of the 3 valleys. I have an on-going quest to ski all the pistes in the 3 valleys. I'm doing pretty well on Courchevel and Meribel with a few notable exceptions..... These are in Courchevel - Plan du Vah and Meribel - Villages.
Looking at the piste maps I can understand why Villages isn't open as it goes quite low. The one time I skied Raffort (the next lowest run) in 2013 which was a good year, that run was a bit sketchy.
As to Plan du Vah, I've been looking at the realtime opening map and it only seems to open at 16.30. Any thoughts as to why and if it ever does actually open?
The only thought I have as it goes down to the road they don't want to encourage punters or they can't be bothered to piste it.

I would think that it only exists as an emergency escape route for people that have gone down Creux towards closing time but are too slow to make last lift on either Roc Mugnier or Aiguille du Fruit. Without Plan du Vah, they'd be stranded and potentially freeze to death. With it, they have a way out of the valley without having to climb. Hence why it only opens at the same time as those two lifts close.

Yes Plan du Vah opens at the end of the day for those that have missed the last lift. It takes you to a bus stop where you can get a free bus either up to 1850 or down to 1650.

Hi all, we are staying in Méribel-Mottaret and have booked First tracks which goes from Méribel (Saulire Express gondola) at 7.50am on Thursday.
The first bus down looks tight to get us there on time (when we booked the tourist office said it would be fine but are now saying it probably won’t be). Would we be able to ski down Truite at 7.30?
